Synopsis
As the episode starts, SpongeBob and Patrick receive the official Goofy Goober backscratcher and try it out on each other; they decide to go see Sandy to see if she would like to use it. But upon reaching the treedome, they find Sandy in a panic; she explains to the two that that her bosses, the Chimpanzee beneficiaries, are paying a visit to see what progress she has made with her inventions, but Sandy doesn't think any of her work will satisfy the chimps, and if they don't like what she's invented, Sandy could lose her funding, forcing her to leave Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob and Patrick decide to help their distraught friend by taking over her work and finishing her inventions for her.
At first, Patrick has ideas of things that have already been invented, such as a pencil and a mirror, which ironically is actually a parallel universe. After hours of hard work, SpongeBob and Patrick invent a back-scratching, hair-combing, nose-picking ukulele-tuner.
When the chimps arrive, Lord Reginald is the first to test it. Shockingly, the invention works, but has kinks as it feeds him pudding and when tuning the ukulele, the machine malfunctions, hits Reginald with the ukulele, slaps him, then starts attacking him with all sorts of weapons.
Meanwhile, Sandy hears the screaming of Reginald and arrives just as the machine spits out Reginald. The chimps decide to close down the treedome, but when Dr. Marmalade stays behind and holds out a banana, Sandy's "nutcracker" suddenly reactivates and peels it for him perfectly. It is revealed that this is a banana peeler that the Chimps have been searching hundreds of years for. They chatter excitedly and in return, Professor Percy offers Sandy a 20 year renewal to her contract, including a higher salary, and she happily accepts.
After the chimps leave, the episode finishes with Patrick deciding to test out the machine that injured Reginald, which of course, malfunctions on him, yet he screams in pain and still yells out "Alright!"

Trivia
General
- This episode originally had the packaging number of 72a and was paired with "Whale of a Birthday," but it was eventually rearranged.[1]
- The back scratcher that SpongeBob buys at the beginning of the episode costs him 52 box tops.
- This is the first episode for several things:
- The first episode to have the title card cut to black then fade into the credits instead of fading out then into the credits. This change would be used sporadically with the later season 4 and 5 episodes until it was made a permanent change by "House Fancy."
- The first episode to have actual land mammals in it besides Sandy, Mermaid Man, and Barnacle Boy.
- The first episode to reference the Goofy Goober franchise outside of the first movie.
- The first episode to use the tracks "Goofy Conversation" and "Marlin March."
- This episode is the second in which Sandy sings a song that upsets SpongeBob and Patrick to the point of crying. The first is "Texas."
- Coincidentally, both episodes actually share a similar setup; Sandy is about to leave Bikini Bottom to go back to Texas, and SpongeBob and Patrick do something about it to make sure she doesn't leave. One of the differences is that in "Texas," she wanted to go back herself as her own decision, while in this episode, she would have had to go back because of her loss of funding.
- Based on the comparative size of SpongeBob and Patrick when compared to the humans depicted in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, the chimps depicted in this episode would only be 2-3 inches tall.
- Although Squidward doesn't appear in this episode, he only speaks, only having one line.
- This is the only episode to feature the track, "Hall of Fame [#9]."
- List of Sandy's inventions in-episode:
- A nut helmet (SpongeBob uses it to talk to a peanut)
- A nut cruncher (SpongeBob, still wearing the nut helmet, hears the peanut's screaming)
- A failing robotic nutcracker aka banana peeler
- The things holding SpongeBob's invention together:
- Bandages
- Screws driven into bottle caps
- Pieces of tape made into an X
- A taped-down lollipop
- Chewed-up bubble gum
- The towns for those that have nowhere else to go, as mentioned by the bus driver, in which the bus makes stops to:
- Quittersville
- Failuretown
- Loserburg
- SpongeBob's invention is called the "Automatic Back Scratcher, Hair Comber, Nose Picker, and Ukulele Tuner 9000."
- The peanut SpongeBob talks to says, "It's dark in here."
- The inventions Patrick thinks of:
- Pencil: a stick that can be used to draw or write stuff with
- Light bulb: a glass ball that lights up so the user can see in the dark
- Mirror: a parallel universe
- In this episode, SpongeBob and Patrick's water helmets are worn with the openings facing up, the same as how they are shown in the episode "Tea at the Treedome." Normally, they face down.
- The helmets are later worn with the openings facing up in "Squidtastic Voyage" and "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?," the latter in the case allowing SpongeBob to short out Sandy's robot.
- The list of items shown when "The Automatic Back-Scratcher, Hair-Comber, Nose-Picker, and Ukulele-Tuner 9000" goes haywire include:
- An electric saw with a circular blade
- A flamethrower
- A pair of scissors
- A corkscrew
- An aerial poison dart
- A taser
- Inventions the chimps have been searching for many years:
- Banana peeler
- Poop thrower
- The chimps exclaimed they searched 117 years for a banana peeler, so they could be older than that, making them the oldest mammals in the show. Of course, they could simply be referring to them as a species, or the company they work for.
- When Sandy sings the "birds that fly upon the ground" line, a manta ray swims by, releasing a hawk call. This is strange because most birds are depicted as scallops.
- In Sandy's song, string squeaks can be heard camouflaged in the background of her music. Although in "Texas," one can hear that the guitar strumming sounds distorted, so the string squeaks cannot be heard.
- SpongeBob's reflection has a slight Russian accent.
- Right near the end of the episode, while the chimps leave and say "Goodbye!," one of them is heard singing the line.
- Nigel Planer, Christopher Ryan, and Rik Mayall all played on the British sitcom The Young Ones. Mayall and Planer are also a part of the UK comedy group The Comic Strip. - Ryan is often mistaken as a member of the Comic Strip due to his role as 'Mike' in The Young Ones, which originally featured Comic Strip members to play all 4 main characters, with Comic Strip member Peter Richardson slated to play Mike. Richardson had to bow out due to other commitments, and was re-cast by non-Strip member Christopher Ryan.
- This episode was originally going to be included on Nautical Nonsense digital collection, but was removed for unknown reasons.[2]
- In the beginning of the episode, Sandy says that the chimps are coming that afternoon. When SpongeBob and Patrick want to help, they work all night, and the chimps come the next day.
- On the October 26, 2009 airing, this episode was paired with "Scaredy Pants."[3]
- This episode was later adapted as a comic in the 2015's Issue #8 of SpongeBob and his Friends in Russia.
Dub facts
- In the Persian Toon dub, music tracks are often replaced with different ones or stock music, usually being crudely intertwined with the music that was already there. In this episode, "Earls Revenge" and "Hilo Rag" swap with each other twice as the episode ends. "Wormy" and later, "Demolition Doofus" would have issues with these two tracks in this dub.
Cultural references
- This episode's title is a parody of Chips Ahoy!, a popular cookie brand.
- The monkeys on the title card resemble the Barrel of Monkeys toy made by Hasbro.
Errors
- When SpongeBob looks in the mirror, he is wearing his water helmet. However, in the mirror, it is gone.
- When Patrick is putting the mirror away, SpongeBob's helmet is still missing.
- When SpongeBob is talking to a peanut with the nut helmet, his holes inside the helmet's visor are colored orange.
- After the Automatic Back Scratcher, Hair Comber, Nose Picker, and Ukulele Tuner 9000 starts its work, the track "Earls Revenge" gets cut off after the middle of the track.
- This error also occurs with "Spongemonger" in "Band Geeks."
- When SpongeBob says, "Wow, Sandy!", his eyelashes disappear for a frame.
- When SpongeBob cheers after Sandy accepts her new deal, the tint from his water helmet is missing. This error also occurs in "SpongeBob's Road to Christmas."
- Christopher Ryan is not credited for voicing Professor Percy.
- Between the scenes where SpongeBob and Patrick begin to invent, and the bubble transition to them finishing their invention, a blue card that says "Prod Sponge Bob 3/22/2006" can be seen.
