It was confirmed by Vincent Waller on May 10, 2022 that he retired and no longer works for the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise.[1] He left after having directed a couple episodes of season 13 and one episode of The Patrick Star Show.

He has done animation for the Nicktoons, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Hey Arnold!, CatDog, The Wild Thornberrys, Catscratch, Sanjay and Craig, and The Patrick Star Show. He has also worked on eight animated films: The Chipmunk Adventure, Oliver & Company, The Little Mermaid, Box-Office Bunny, Gumby: The Movie, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Alan Smart also worked on the pilot episode of the TV series, Family Dog and was an animation director on Clone High and 101 Dalmatians: The Series (according to the credits).

As of July 2013, he is the Supervising Animation Director at Paramount Pictures.
