SpongeBob SquarePants is a popular cartoon, and has been referenced in popular culture numerous times. Several of these references are from movies from Nickelodeon and from other companies.
The Muppets
- In It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Whoopi Goldberg says she's just lucky SpongeBob isn't on.
Orange County
- In the 2002 film Orange Country, Lance is seen watching and laughing at the episode "Help Wanted."
Tomb Raider
- Clips from the episode "Jellyfishing" appeared in the 2003 film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, but the characters' voices were spoken in Mandarin Chinese.
Daddy Day Care
- In the opening scene from the 2003 film Daddy Day Care, Ben Hinton is seen wearing SpongeBob slippers.
Super Size Me
- In the 2004 documentary film Super Size Me, a SpongeBob lunchbox is briefly seen. Later in the film, a kid can be seen wearing a SpongeBob T-shirt.
War of the Worlds
- In the 2005 film War of the Worlds, clips from the episode "The Secret Box" are seen.
Zathura
- In the 2005 film Zathura, the "It's a giraffe!" scene from the episode "Bubblestand" is seen. Also, Danny asks Walter if he can watch SpongeBob SquarePants after he changes the channel from SpongeBob to Sports Center. When Cartoon Network aired the film, the scene was skipped, possibly due to the channel not wanting Nickelodeon to appear on their channel.
Are We There Yet?
- In the 2005 film Are We There Yet?, a character says, "We don't have SpongeBob!"
Final Destination
- In the 2006 film Final Destination 3, Kevin Fisher references SpongeBob when he sees a SpongeBob plush toy in a picture featuring Frankie Cheeks.
Firewall
- In the film Firewall, SpongeBob can be heard saying the line "Did you ever notice how big squirrels' teeth are?" from the episode "Squirrel Jokes." Other SpongeBob clips are also heard, but they are mostly from "Squirrel Jokes."
Alvin and the Chipmunks
- In the 2007 film Alvin and the Chipmunks, clips of the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Have You Seen This Snail?" are seen, plus the theme song.
Tamagotchi: The Movie
- In the 2007 film Tamagotchi: The Movie, the way Shingotchi moves while saying "So, Atchi, what activity could I match up with this pose, huh?!" is very similar to the dance SpongeBob does in "Help Wanted."
Cloverfield
- In the 2008 film Cloverfield, in the television store, before the main character sees the news, clips of the episode "MuscleBob BuffPants" are seen.
Food, Inc.
- In the 2008 documentary film Food, Inc., a banner for "Pest of the West" Burger King toys can be seen during the segment "The Dollar Menu."
Tower Heist
- In Tower Heist, during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a SpongeBob float is seen with the theme song playing. A cameo shows a guy in the background selling character balloons, and at the top there is a SpongeBob balloon, with Patrick.
Karate Kid
- In the 2010 film The Karate Kid, after moving in with his mom, Dre turns on the TV, the SpongeBob intro is briefly played, and finds it on the episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III." The clip shown is in Chinese, due to the fact that the movie was filmed in China.
Grown Ups
- In the 2010 film Grown Ups, one of the girls mentions talking to SpongeBob while taking on a "cup and string" phone.
Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer
- In the 2011 film Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, Judy calls Frank "Mr. SpongeFrank SquareBottom."
Fred
- In the 2011 film Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred, Fred dresses up as SpongeBob for Halloween.
Flight
- In the 2012 drama-mystery film Flight, when the main character is changing the channel at a hotel room, a brief clip of the episode "New Digs" is shown.
This is 40
- In the 2012 film This is 40, clips of the episode "No Weenies Allowed" are seen.
Piranha 3DD
- In the 2012 film Piranha 3DD, David Hasselhoff asks a kid if he knows him from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
Ted
- In the 2012 Seth MacFarlane film Ted, John and Ted are seen watching the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Procrastination" at the beginning, ironically as John is procrastinating going to work.
Rec 3: Genesis
- In the 2012 film Rec 3: Genesis, a person dressed up as a "John Sponge" shows up and explains that he is dressed up like that because of an issue with copyright.
I Know That Voice
- In the 2013 documentary film I Know That Voice, plush toys of SpongeBob can be seen at Tom Kenny's house.
Daddy's Home
- In the 2015 film Daddy's Home, close to the end of the movie, there is a man who is wearing a Squidward tie and has a couple of talking lines. Mark Wahlberg's character later on calls him "Squidward Tie" to make the reference even more obvious.
- In the 2017 film Daddy's Home 2, the kids can be seen watching a scene of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
Monster Trucks
- In the 2017 Nickelodeon film Monster Trucks, the officer can be seen watching the SpongeBob episode "It Came from Goo Lagoon."
Baywatch
- In the 2017 film Baywatch, in a little girl's room, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Gary plush toys are hanging from a crib. Dwayne Johnson's character later on gets strangled with them still attached to it.
Marvel
- In the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War, Tony Stark jokingly calls one of Thanos' minions, Ebony Maw Squidward.
Star Wars
- In the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story, a Stormtrooper yells "My Leg!" during a battle on the planet Mimban. This may have been an unintentional reference to the popular "My Leg!" gag.
Instant Family
- In the 2018 film Instant Family, Lita is seen holding a SpongeBob knife.
Pet Sematary
- In the 2019 remake of Pet Sematary, Ellie can be seen watching the episode "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" in one scene.
Invader Zim
- In the 2019 Netfilx film Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, during the "Peace is Nice" montage, a child can be seen dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants.
Come Play
- In the 2020 film Come Play, SpongeBob SquarePants plays a major role in the film with the main character, Oliver watching it on a streaming service.
PAW Patrol: The Movie
- In the 2021 film PAW Patrol: The Movie, the Nickelodeon Movies opening from The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run appears, and SpongeBob SquarePants appears.
The Loud House Movie
- In the 2021 film The Loud House Movie, the Nickelodeon Movies logo from The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run appears, and SpongeBob SquarePants appears.
- A flower cloud and a pineapple can be seen when Lincoln is reading on a newspaper on a toilet.
- In the opening, Mr. Grouse can been seen reading a newspaper article about Gary called "Advice from Gary, 'How to Come Out of Your Shell.'", written in all capitals.
The J Team
- In the 2021 film The J Team, the Nickelodeon Movies opening from The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run appears, and SpongeBob SquarePants appears.
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers
- In one scene, there is a Hollywood star with Squidward's name on it.
- At the end of the film when the bootlegged toons are freed, one of them is Patrick, mixed with the head of Wembley Fraggle from Fraggle Rock: The Animated Series.
- Patrick's normal form can also be seen in a t-shirt in one scene.
- SpongeBob is also on a t-shirt in one scene.
- In one scene, a red Krusty Krab hat can be seen.
- A bootleg version of Larry the Lobster can be seen in one scene.
- A bootleg version of SpongeBob can be seen in the discussion papers.
