He worked as an animation director and sheet timer from seasons 1-8, and returned to the franchise in season 12, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, and The Patrick Star Show.

In 1999, after two years as an animation timer on The Angry Beavers, Overtoom was hired as an animation director on the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, for which he was nominated at the Emmy Awards in 2004, 2007, and 2011. Other credits include Family Guy and American Dad! for the Fox Broadcasting Company and Dave the Barbarian and Phineas and Ferb for Disney.
