Plot

SpongeBob is willing to pass his driving license now with Mrs Puff, but fails. Patrick passes it, and gets a new Bumperville. SpongeBob is jealous that his friend has got a new car. They went around Patrick's house for an hour and SpongeBob is tired. Patrick drives SpongeBob to his parents. Patrick nearly crashes, but doesn't wreck it. Patrick shows SpongeBob's mother and father his driving license. However, when they went back home, the duo passed a sign informing drivers to travel forty mph. SpongeBob checks the speedometer and finds that Patrick is traveling at forty and a half mph. SpongeBob goes to the police and tells the story. But the police dosen't believe him due to the stop which brought the speed of the boat forty under the limit which was zero an hour. At an intersection, Patrick passes the red light, causing cars to crash and pedestrians running away. SpongeBob rips Patrick license and Patrick is blamed for being a litterbug. Patrick was taken to jail, but SpongeBob begs for the police to send him to jail, since he was the litterbug. The judge agrees, and one week of social work later, SpongeBob made a plate for Patrick's car. But Patrick said he threw it away because the needle was pointing at E, meaning the gas tank was empty, but Patrick thought his Bumperville had died.

• The boat Patrick gets is a driveable boat in SpongeBob's Boating Bash.
• SpongeBob's seatbelt goes through his arm in Doing Time"
• When Patrick plays his hotrod's horn, it's a parody of the Dukes Of Hazzard's "General Lee"
• This is the only season 4 appearance of SpongeBob's mom and dad
• Patrick weighs two ounces and it is revealed in earlier episodes SpongeBob weighs just one ounce
• This is the second time the police called SpongeBob a "tattletale" The first time was in "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler"
• Patrick's driver's license claimed that his eyes ere black, but in Wormy his eyes were green
• German Title: Eine Träne im SchlaglochIn English this translates to "A Tear In The Pothole" is a pun on a German saying.
• SpongeBob said that he had failed 57 (now 58) times, but in Mrs Puff, You're Fired he had failed 1,258,056 times. However, near the end of the episode, Mrs Puff said that SpongeBob's dossier was destroyed in an explosion that destroyed the school and that since the dossier was gone it seemed like he never took the tests
• When the guards escort Patrick away, he says to SpongeBob, "Don't forget to feed Gary Sometimes you forget to feed him," a reference to the episode Have You Seen This Snail?
• When Patrick's hotrod is first seen, the front wheels were not completely attached Later, the axle, if it actually exists, wold have been at the bottom of the car, not attached to anything
• Throughout the episode, the car slopes forward more and more
• The waltz from Rock-a-Bye Bivalve can be heard in one scene
• Patrick changes color during the close-up near the end
• 33rd time Squidward doesn't appear. He is probably still riding on the motorbike from Hocus Pocus

• When the announcer said that Crust Blaster 3000 is the ultimate boating machine, it's the allusion to BMW when it's called an ultimate driving machine.
• The Announcer for Patrick's new car says "Women will love you. And men will want to be you" This is a quote from Austin Powers.
• A Police Officer says "Oww, I got me a runner!". This line is from the science fiction movie Logan's Run.
• Patrick's horn plays the song La Cucaracha.
• Patrick doesn't get arrested for the crimes he commited in the car until Good Ol' Whatshisname.
