Dying for Pie

Template:Episode "Dying for Pie" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season two.

Brief summary: Squidward accidentally lets SpongeBob eat an exploding pie. To alleviate his guilt, Squidward resolves to make SpongeBob's few remaining hours enjoyable. And that makes Squidward more miserable than ever!

Plot

At the Krusty Krab, it's 'Employee Brotherhood day'. Squidward doesn't know this. On 'Employee Brotherhood day', all employees must exchange gifts (they have to make the gifts themselves), and SpongeBob gives Squidward a sweater made out of his eyelashes. When Squidward scoffs at his heartfelt gift, SpongeBob begins to cry copiously, eventually handing Squidward a sweater made from his tears.

Squidward wishes he could buy a gift instead of make one, and sees a group of Vikings outside with a sack of pies. He goes outside and his crew says that they're for the Lord, but after Squidward offers to buy them in the Lord's factory. One of the Vikings says they were kidding, and Squidward buys a pie for $25. He lies to Mr. Krabs, saying that he made it. Mr. Krabs inspects it, and says he has to eat a bit to see it wasn't horrible. He breaks a tiny bit off the crust and says "This would go great with some milk!" As he gets the milk, he trips over and the bit of the pie explodes and wrecks the back of the Krusty Krab. Squidward and Mr. Krabs are blown far away. When they arrive at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob acts as if he ate the pie, even though he actually ate a different one. Mr. Krabs tells Squidward that the pie would explode when it reached SpongeBob's lower intestine (which is around sunset), so Squidward decides to make SpongeBob's remaining hours fun. After being asked what the funnest things he could do are, SpongeBob presents a list of the funnest things he could do.

And the Lord explained the pies are made in his factory, Squidward remembers that SpongeBob will explode at sunset, it's the four of them. So Patrick and he builds a brick wall between them. At sunset, there is an explosion, but it's actually a bubble that SpongeBob blew (It's in the shape of a bomb and explodes). There is another explosion which knocks the wall down, crushing Squidward. Squidward comes out and finds that SpongeBob is still alive. He says he's supposed to explode. Patrick said that the pie was he left in the storm, made for the Vikings. SpongeBob doesn't seem to remember, then says 'Oh, this pie!" He takes the explosive pie out of his pocket and says that he was saving it for them to share. He trips over, and the pie/bomb hits Squidward in the face and goes off, demolishing all of Bikini Bottom. The (extremely huge) explosion, here portrayed by actual live action footage of the nuclear test Operation Crossroads, can be seen above the sea. Squidward gets the full force of the explosion, and manages to utter out, "Ow" as his last word.

Patrick: I remembered someone else the Vikings told Squid and realized that the Vikings are his fault.

SpongeBob: My pocket! Well, since we already finished the list, I thought I'd make up a new one. I've already filled up this book with ideas. We should be able to start written by Feburary.

Patrick: Forget the book.

SpongeBob: You want me NOT to explode?

Patrick: Oui. We sure have not to explode

SpongeBob: What pie?

Patrick: The one that I left sitting on the trolley bus, that I bought from the Vikings, for 25 bucks, and I didn't know it was a bomb, and you ate it, THAT PIE!!!

SpongeBob: Pie........ Oh, you mean this pie! (holds up the Lord's pie) I was saving it in my pocket for us to share! Let's eat! (trips on a rock) oops! (pie lands on Squidward and Patrick, causing Bikini Bottom to explode, and a mushroom cloud appears on the surface of the sea.)

Patrick: SpongeBob? What are you doing?

• Squidward: I'm gonna make SpongeBob's final hours the best he's ever had. And this time, he's gonna be loved, so much, he's gonna drown in it!.........DROWN IN IT!

Mr. Krabs: Note to self: Watch out for Squidward.

• SpongeBob "Ok see ya later, squidenator!"

SpongeBob: (laughs) "Good one, Pat, and Squid."

(Patrick and Squidward drank in a pear, this time all 28 kids make a wishing well to recive money in the water and they kick sand at him)

SpongeBob: "When we riding in a wagon, we could think, we need a lot of the stuff!"

Patrick: "Haven't we got a shield?"

SpongeBob: "God has life to ride the wagon, ride the wagon, ride the wagon!"

Cultural References

• The Operation Crossroads nuclear test, footage of which is used to represent the explosion near the end of the episode, was conducted at Bikini Atoll. SpongeBob SquarePants is set in the fictional city of Bikini Bottom, which is named after this atoll (possibly indirectly, via the bikini swimsuit).
• Between Operation Crossroads in 1946 and 1958, Bikini Atoll was the testing ground of more than twenty hydrogen bomb/atomic bomb tests, meaning that Bikini Bottom must have been vapourized or burned down several times in those twelve years. A possible reference to this is made by Mr Krabs who says, "I've seen this before. Eleven times as a matter of fact." Mr. Krabs was in the Navy,(revealed in Shell of a Man, possibly an underwater version of a ground force division) so he should have experienced these events.
• Camp Lazlo has a similar episode called The Big Cheese. Scoutmaster Lumpus eats a deadly cheese and finds out he is going to die in 13 minutes. At the end, just like this episode, Lumpus explodes. Here are the reasons and the unfortunate events: In Camp Lazlo, the cheese is made in China and Lumpus goes to jail, though explodes at the end. In SpongeBob SquarePants, SpongeBob kept the pie in his pocket and he trips causing a big explosion.

Trivia/Goofs

• At the end of the episode, Patrick who could laugh in the Goo Lagoon, for the sunset, he, Squidward and SpogneBob can always sit in their beach chairs to watch TV.
• On the Gospel Music Channel, the theme song isn't shown.
• When Patrick drives to the Krusty Krab in his milk truck, he thinks we think they are cows in the Krusty Krab, home of the Krabby Patty.

• Patrick asks what flavor the pie is. In the episode, the Vikings say, "Orange!" "Banana!" "Strawberry!", but in one of the "Rugrats" comic books, they say, "Grape!" "Blueberry!" "Jamberry!", before the Rugrats get out of the town, to the Death Valley, but also in one of "The Wild Thronberrys" plays, "Sea for Water", they say "Lemon!" "Blackberry!" "Ice Cream!" "Pumpkin!", before one of the Thronberrys throws a bag of loot filled with coins on the sea when the bag of loot floats away. A reference that the pies were in the Lord's Factory.
• When SpongeBob trips and lets the pie hit Squidward or on Patrick's face, the explosion takes place at the center of Bikini Bottom on Goo Lagoon they were on.
• When SpongeBob trips on the pie, an explosion causes the Bikini Bottom sign to vanish.
• This episode is the first SpongeBob episode to allow blood to be seen. The second is in Karate Island, and third in Born to Be Wild.
• The rock which trips SpongeBob when he drops the Lord's pie only appears in the scene where he actually trips. Other times, the rock has vanished.
• In the Friend or Foe marathon, this episode aired with The Phone and Buildings.
• The live-action explosion from this episode later returns in "Going Out on the West End Again".
• After most of the list is done, Patrick begged Squidward and SpongeBob to go for a ride to the Goo Lagoon.
