"Dying for Pie" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season . In this episode, "Dying for Pie" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season two.

Brief summary: Squidward accidentally lets SpongeBob eat an exploding pie. To alleviate his guilt, Squidward resolves to make SpongeBob's few remaining hours enjoyable.

Characters Present:

Plot

At the Krusty Krab, it's "Employee Brotherhood day". On Employee Brotherhood day, all employees must exchange gifts (they have to make the gifts themselves), and SpongeBob gives Squidward a sweater made out of his eyelashes. When Squidward scoffs at his heartfelt gift, SpongeBob begins to cry copiously, eventually handing Squidward a sweater made from his tears.

Squidward wishes he could buy a gift instead of make one, and sees a group of pirates outside with a sack of pies. He goes outside, but he is told they are in fact, bombs disguised as pies. When Squidward mentions he was going to buy one, the captain lies that they were merely kidding, and Squidward buys a pie for $25. He lies to Mr. Krabs, saying that he made it. Mr. Krabs inspects it, and says he has to eat a bit to test its quality. He breaks a tiny bit off the crust and says "This would go great with some milk!" As he gets the milk, he trips over and the bit of the pie explodes and wrecks the back of the Krusty Krab. Squidward and Mr. Krabs are blown far away. When Spongebob investigates, he finds the pie. When they arrive at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob thanks Squidward for the pie and leaves. Mr. Krabs tells Squidward that the pie will explode and kill Spongebob when it hits his lower intestine (which is around sunset), so Squidward decides to make SpongeBob's remaining hours fun. After being asked what the funnest things he could do are, SpongeBob presents a list of the funnest things he could do.

With much anxiety, Squidward remembers that SpongeBob will explode at sunset. At sunset, Squidward builds a brick wall between him and Spongebob to shield him from the explosion. Sure enough, there is an explosion, and thinking Spongebob to be dead, Squidward bursts into tears. However, there is then another explosion which knocks the wall down, crushing Squidward. Squidward comes out and finds that SpongeBob is still alive, and was blowing bomb-shaped bubbles. Squidward becomes angry, and explains to Spongebob that he was supposed to die. SpongeBob doesn't seem to remember, then says "Oh, this pie!" He takes the explosive pie out of his pocket and says that he was saving it for them to share. He trips over in haste, and the pie/bomb hits Squidward in the face and goes off, demolishing all of Bikini Bottom. The (extremely huge) explosion, here portrayed by actual live action footage of the nuclear test Operation Crossroads, can be seen above the sea.

Trivia/Goofs

The Operation Crossroads nuclear test, footage of which is used to represent the explosion near the end of the episode, was conducted at Bikini Atoll. Bikini Bottom is located directly under this island and is also named after it (although its name is also a reference to the bottom piece of a bikini swimsuit).

Bikini Atoll was the site of more than 20 atomic/hydrogen bomb tests between 1946 and 1958.

The explosion happened in the middle of the city, not on the cliff they were on.
Mr. Krabs claims to have seen someone die by eating a bomb eleven times in the past.
When Squidward says that the pie Spongebob "ate" was a bomb and Spongebob says, "What pie?" and Squidward says, "The one I left sitting on the counter this morning, that pie!" Closed captions read, "The one I left on the counter today."
SpongeBob checks off the "salmon suit" item twice.
Despite not actually eating the pie, Spongebob is seen licking his fingers and burping up something when he thanks Squidward for it.
An episode of the Cartoon Network series "Camp Lazlo" is remarkably similar to this one. In the episode, Scoutmaster Lumpus eats a cheesewheel that will supposedly cause him to desintigrate within 13 minutes.
