Release
- This episode is available on The Patrick Star Show Season 1, Volume 1 DVD.
Trivia
General
- This is the second episode in the franchise for its title to end in "à la Mode," with the first being the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Krabs à la Mode."
- Much like the episode's sister segment, "Stair Wars," the iTunes version of this episode also uses the regular SpongeBob font instead of the font used regularly on the credits of this spin-off.
- The segments on the Segment Wheel are:
- Broccoli
- Monster Wrassle
- Rock Out!
- Eel Hats
- Bug Your Sister
- Unknown segment
- Ice Cream (The one Patrick chose. According to Squidina, he had picked it before on another episode)
- Toilet Paper
- The "o" in "Mode" has a bowl of ice cream. This references the fact that Patrick wants ice cream before doing his show.
- SpongeBob's alarm clock can be seen when Squidina and GrandPat are smashing the clocks.
- This is the second episode of the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise where Template:Data:Links is completely absent, as he does not make an appearance and he is not mentioned. It is also the fourth episode where he does not appear following "The Algae's Always Greener," "Late for Breakfast," and "Stair Wars." In addition, this episode is the second where he is absent alongside "Stair Wars" from both segments.
- This is the first episode of The Patrick Star Show where Cecil Star doesn't appear.
- This was Alan Smart's last episode of The Patrick Star Show as a supervising director before he completely left the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise in late 2021.[8]
Cultural references
- Squidina's popsicle looks like a Bomb Pop.
- Like "Banned in Bikini Bottom," the ice cream prohibition story GrandPat tells is a reference to the real world prohibition on alcohol in the United States.
- Storyboard artist Ian Vazquez stated on Twitter that many of the characters in the prohibition scene are based of past cartoons:
- Rough-Bowl's design is similar to Rough House form the Popeye comics.[1]
- Prohibition Patron 2 is inspired by the fishes from 1939's Small Fry.[2]
- Errol Claw, Irving S. Krab, Squiddy Jones, and Freda Angelfish are inspired by caricature from 1930's Hollywood cartoons and 1930's celebrities, with Freda Angelfish based off Josephine Baker."[3][9]
- The song Walter the Waiter sings is possibly a reference to the song "The Candyman Can" from the 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
