SpongeBob Plot
SpongeBob and Patrick are in Jellyfish Fields blowing bubbles. SpongeBob blows a bubble that engulfs them boths, and floats into a nearby cave. The bubble suddenly pops on an ancient piece of gold. Eager to discover what exactly it is, they go to the Bikini Bottom Museum where they find Squidward. Squidward, at first thinks that SpongeBob and patrick were stealing, when he realizes that they found the missing half. By this tiem, Sandy and Mr. Krabs join them. The pieces of gold are reunited which brings SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy to journey to Atlantis by a luxurious bus (called a "van" by Squidward) piloted by a robot and fueled by "song." However, Plankton sneaks inside the bus's front compartmtent and plans to steal the weapons of Atlantis. Once they arrive there,(accidentally crash-landing in a topiary garden) they meet Lord Royal Highness who shows them the riches, knowledge, and art of Atlantis.
Unfortunately, Plankton escapes from the compartment and makes it into the weapons room and commandeers a giant battle tank out of dozens, or hundreds of warfare. Meanwhile, Mr. Krabs enjoys the money vault, Sandy enjoys the science lab, and Squidward enjoys the hall of art(the rooms each were planning to see). In the money vault, money, gold, and prized objects are found and mostly stashed in Mr. Krabs's pants pockets. In the science lab, Sandy enjoys the devices, a biomass converting device that turns any household object into ice cream (a bug the Atlantians haven't worked out), a germ-fighting, interactive, micro video game, and makes an automatic feeding device. And in the Hall of Arts, Squidward journeys through paintings, gets modeled by artmakers, and even makes his own painting, claiming to know more art than 4 years of community college.
But everything goes wrong when SpongeBob and Patrick take a picture of them with the oldest living bubble and the bubble pops. At dinner, LRH says the bubble they popped was a prop for the tourists, but when he shows them the real bubble, Patrick takes a picture of it and it pops too. The Atlantians then turn from peaceful citizens to angry warriors avenging their most prized possesion. But when Plankton arrives, he fires the tank at SpongeBob, the gang, and the Alantian warriors, but it turns out to be a giant ice cream maker. When he angrilly jumps out and kicks the tank (injuring is foot in the process of kicking it), LRH sees him and uses him as a replacement for the bubble, but more exciting, calling him a talking speck. He'll be back yet again. Against everyone's wishes, SpongeBob and friends ride the bus back to Bikini Bottom, although SpongeBob is eager to return. They probably won't be back because LRH had one of the warriors toss the gold medallion. LRH complains that he only had brought SpongeBob to Atlantis because he thought sponges were supposed to bring good luck, but instead did the opposite. The episode ends with SpongeBob singing of going back to the Krusty Krab while his friends whimper and beg that it was such a great city that they never watned to go back to Bikini Bottom, and they all cry in the song Bikini Bottom Now.
Patchy the Pirate Plot
Patchy is stuck in traffic at Encino, California. Then, his Cell Phone rings, and Potty warns that he's going to miss it. Patchy yells at the guy driving behind him for honking at him because he is trying to talk to his parrot. Patchy tells Potty to record the movie, but Potty tells him that he threw the videotape in the trash, making him mad. Then, the traffic lines moves, but suddenly, he finds himself nowhere, and yells out Encino, it's gone.......NNNNNNNNNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Then, he cries that this isn't the only time a Lost-City had occured. Then, he tells us that the episode is what we should watch instead of watching him suffer. Then, Patchy gets his Radio fixed, but not for long when it explodes again and produces smoke.
Patchy later gets the hallucinations, and he finds a boy dressed in tall sponge outfit who cries out that he is SpongeBob in real-life form. Then, Potty wakes him up after he thought he is back in Encino, which is all just a dream. Patchy begins to eat a sandwich, but he finds mayonnaise on it. After this, he finds Three Aliens and the portrayal of Encino. The Three Aliens explain that their son Norbluckfive was playing with his Shrink-A-Tron again. Patchy yells at them that he wants his town back in full size, and he keeps saying There's no place like home!. Sympathied by Patchy's crying that he wants to go home because he missed the entire story, Norbluckfive's mother gets the Shrink-A-Tron given from her son, and she presses the big & red button control, making a tornado disaster to fix it up. Then, Patchy is glad to be back in Encino, but soon, a giant Potty the Parrot crushes him into the house, realizing that now he is shrunk into Encino, not that Encino became bigger.
Trivia/Goofs
- This episode establishes that Atlantis had been lost for centuries, yet in Neptune's Spatula, Neptune almost took SpongeBob to live there as the Royal Fry Cook, which meant that it was anything but lost less than a decade before this.
- One of the paintings in the museum in the backround is "The Scream" but instead of a man, it is a fish.
- The text style in the title card is the same as in Gumby 1983 episode "The Search".
- The videogame The Germ Warrior Sandy plays parodies these videogames:
*Bubble Bobble Revolution(also known as Taito Legends) (for the popping bubble color machine) *Super Mario Bros(the monsters resembles the enemies of Super Mario and the digital crossing controls) *Dance Dance Revolution (the arrow-dancing game) *Donkey Kong 3(Sandy rescuing SpongeBob after they are kidnapped)
- The people of the Atlantis City are very similar of the Blue Meanies from the 1968 Beatles film Yellow Submarine. However, they also have very large differences and similarties against each other. Atlanteans are kind scientists. Blue Meanies are angry villainous monsters.
- Mr.Krabs made a really big reference to the comic strip Garfield for wearing the shirt I Hate Mondays. Garfield the fat lazy orange cat always complains Mondays give him the jyinxs, and he is forced to spend his nine lives on the curse.
- The part where Patchy goes all crazy in the tornado is a parody of the novel The Wizard of Oz.
- Squog getting frightened by the painting he drew coming to life is a reference to The Twillight Zone.
- Patchy's appearance was insulted for the second time because he has a beard by the three aliens. The first was The Sponge Who Could Fly, because he had lost his arm(regulary), his eye(regulary), and his leg(now that's new!) by Potty.
- The boat-board on Patchy's boat says ARRRRRRRRRR!!!
- This is the first time we see SpongeBob as a real-live humanoid sponge. All others have him as animated.
- The Patchy the Pirate plot did not air on TV together on November 19, 2007, the episode's debuting airdate. However, all the other broadcast viewings contained it.
Reception
Atlantis SquarePantis was generally given mixed reviews by critics and fans alike.[3] Tom Shales, a television critic for The Washington Post, lambasted the movie in a November 12, 2007 review. In the review, titled Squeezing The Life Out of SpongeBob, Shales wrote that "the funniest thing about the film is its title" and "a typical episode has about as many laughs as this inflated version does". Shales criticized the amount of musical numbers in Atlantis SquarePantis, calling them "numbing". He concluded the review with the statement that the show was "flat" and "unimpressive".[1] However, Atlantis SquarePantis recorded nine million viewers, beating every 8pm show on broadcast television that night except Dancing With the Stars.[2] The main reason why the movie had negative reviews was mainly because the film had a lack of appropriate length, no real problem of the story until the ending, and that it was less than one hour long at 45 minutes. Also, none of the minor characters such as Mrs.Puff, Pearl, Larry, and Karen do not appear.
Z to A Countdown
In the weeks prior to the priemere of the epsiode, fans voted online for their favorite episodes. They world premiere in a marathon, starting on November 12, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. Each episode corresponding to a letter of the Alphabet. Starting with Z, for Plan Z, the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. It will end with A, for Atlantis SquarePantis. Additionally, a countdown clock would appear on the bottom right corner of the screen, displaying the amount of time left until the premiere of Atlantis SquarePantis.
At 5:00 pm, Patchy the Pirate started to host the remainder of the marathon from the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. At 6:00 pm, Patchy went underwater for his underwater talk show. After the H episode aired, Patchy went through the top 3 reasons to go to Atlantis:
- 1. You never get lost in a lost city
- 2. All you can eat seafood buffet
- 3. No Traffic
