Plot

SpongeBob receives a note from his cousin BlackJack, who beat him up when they were young, saying that he has been released from prison and is going to pay SpongeBob's parents a "visit". SpongeBob goes to his parents' house, which is covered in plastic and seems to have been labelled a crime scene. Inside, SpongeBob sees another note from BlackJack saying that he is going to see his Grandma next. SpongeBob rushes to his grandmother's house, where he mistakes a gingerbread man cookie for her burnt corpse. However, SpongeBob's actual grandma soon appears and tells him that BlackJack had recently called her, saying that he was tying up some "loose ends" with SpongeBob's family and that he would need SpongeBob to help him clean up the mess afterward.

SpongeBob seeks help from his uncle, Captain Blue SquarePants, a retired police captain. However, whenever he tries to talk to him, Captain Blue is operating some loud device, such as a blender or a radio transmitter, and mistakes SpongeBob's pleading for help as offering to do some task for him, and SpongeBob spends several hours performing various tasks for his uncle. When SpongeBob is finally able to talk to Captain Blue and explains the situation, he tells him that he is retired and no longer fights criminals, but offers to give SpongeBob a ride to BlackJack's house, which turns out to be directly next door.

SpongeBob goes in to confront his foe and save his parents, but it is revealed that his parents were never in any danger, and that they are holding a party for BlackJack to celebrate his release. They explain to SpongeBob that BlackJack has renounces his "criminal" ways of littering, and that their house was closed off due to a krill infestation. BlackJack then enters the room, still intent on beating up SpongeBob, but SpongeBob is now prepared to stand up for himself. As the two prepare to fight, it is revealed that BlackJack is no bigger than SpongeBob's foot and starts punching SpongeBob's big toe. He cannot cause him any harm. SpongeBob tells him that he "hasn't changed a bit", and they all start laughing as the episode ends.

Quotes

  • Captain Blue SquarePants: Do you have any idea what people like that do to people like you?
  • SpongeBob: You mean, they won't give me a push on the swingset?
  • Captain Blue: Well, let's just say I hope you have practiced walking without legs, or arms, or a body.

Trivia/Goofs

  • Second appearance of SpongeBob's grandmother, who first appeared in "Grandma's Kisses".
  • SpongeBob's father's first name is revealed to be Harold.
  • Comcast originally listed this episode as "In Search of Ma and Pa Sponge." This was corrected in 2009.
  • It is never fully explained how BlackJack became tiny. It is possible that SpongeBob remembered him being bigger than he actually was, that SpongeBob grew while BlackJack did not, or that he somehow shrunk while in prison.
  • 346 minutes is equal to 5 hours and 46 minutes. The writers most likely wrote it out this way to make it sound longer.
  • Spongebob's face deflates just like Squidward's did at the end of "Squid's Day Off."
  • John DiMaggio does the voice of Blackjack.
  • In the episode, the pineapple in which SpongeBob lives in was just referred to as "The Pineapple, Bikini Bottom".
  • 45th episode with its name in it.
  • 52nd time Patrick doesn't appear.
  • 40th time Squidward doesn't appear.
  • This is the 4th episode where Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs and Sandy are all absent, and the first since "No Free Rides" which first aired six years earlier.
  • This title card music used to be the same as the beggining of Culture Shock, but then changed to a song later heard on the title card music of The Inside Job.
  • When Spongebob builds the fence, he builds it all around Captain Blue SquarePants' house, but when he drives Spongebob to BlackJack's house, the fence has an opening.
  • When spongebob paints uncle Captin blue house purple later on the house looks the same
  • Just like cousin Blackjack, Spongebob goes to jail for littering
  • When Uncle Captin Blue drives Spongebob to BlackJack's house (who lives next door,) the fence Spongebob built earlier in the episode is brown, instead of white. BlackJack's house is not seen when he builds the fence however
  • The return address that has been covered by saliva can be made out as "BlackJack, 133 Coral (?), bikini bottom"
