The Chum Famine of '59 was a famine that seems to have taken place in 1959.

History

Mr. Krabs referenced this in the episode "Hooky," stating that no employee of the Krusty Krab had taken a break since then. The famine is again referenced in "Frozen Face-Off," when Mr. Krabs recalls being forced to eat kelp during the famine, which he found "kind of dry, but good."

Trivia

• In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game, when the player pauses their game, one of the lines Mr. Krabs says is, "Strange... it's too quiet, like just before the chum famine of '58," suggesting that the chum famine stretched over two years.
