Plot

The episode starts out with everybody getting invitations from SpongeBob. They go to his house to be suprised that they are going to see vacation slides (which they don't care about). The adventure starts with Patrick squirting liquid cheese fizz on the camera. SpongeBob's parents pull up and get SpongeBob and Patrick. SpongeBob looks at a brochure and Patrick suggests a game- Hide and Seek. Patrick gets on the windshield of the car and Harold yells "Egad!!!"' and looses control. They silde and burst into The Oustskirts Outlet Mega-Mall, and Basscar Racing Stadium. Then they fling off the stadium and heads staight into space where a floating cow gets hit by them and lands on the moon. Then they fall back down in the Earth and slide down a rocky cliff onto the road. SpongeBob then suggests they sing the road song. Everyone sings the road song and at the end of the song the engine blows up. They move the car to a local servise station. They wait in an outhouse. Margret sees a playground and offers SpongeBob and Patrick to play on it. They do, but they slide down a sewer pipe and onto a small puddle.

When they get up, they try to get back up, but they can't. They enter a mysterious red kelp forest with many mushrooms. They hear a hollering noise and run. It turns out its a small creature. They jump over a cliff and onto an anenome and onto a mushroom. Behind Patrick is a giant fruit fly. They run away and behind a rock. They hear a noise. It came from a gift shop. SpongeBob wastes his money on useless knicknacks. They sing the road song wearily. Then SpongeBob decides to play the road song on a flute he bought at the gift shop. They walk along past Harold and Margret and into the forest again. Animals follow them. The animals suddenly run away because the giant fruit fly is behind them. SpongeBob stops playing. When they turn around they see the fruit fly wants to give them a lift. They then sing the above the road song. He drops SpongeBob and Patrick off. SpongeBob's parents call them over but SpongeBob and Patrick just fell asleep.

  • This is another spoof of the level in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3.
  • The title of this episode sounds the same parody as the film, RV, Runaway Vacation, Rat Race, and Johnson Family Vacation.
  • This is the first time Officer John was in jail.but he escaped, yet again, on a unicorn. He also became a robot after a zombie appocolypse ruled his home land, making him angry and changing him into a robot.
  • The Road Song is a parody to the Theme song "Holoday Road" from the movie National Lampoons Vacation.
  • The DVD was released on September 20, 2011 before it aired on television one month and fifteen days from its release.
  • The original title for this was Runaway Roadtrip. The DVD cover still has it. (However it is possible that the special will have two titles as most specials do)
  • Mrs. SquarePants name is Margret Bubblebottom-SquarePants.
  • When the car is sent flying into space, there is a cow jumping over the moon, which is an allusion to the nursery rhyme "The Cat and the Fiddle".
  • In the episode, this is the second time Mrs. SquarePants' hair is in a bun. First was "Truth or Square".
  • In the begining of this episode there was a hint that Sandy was interested into SpongeBob's invitation. Which made her have a BIG crush on SpongeBob. She still likes him very much, but as you know, SpongeBob's only belief in love is "krabby patty love." SpongeBob doesn't find out, until the end, that Sandy is in love with him, because of the kiss she had given him at the end of the episode. You can find out what happens next after that episode on the next episode(which is only found in certain theaters).
  • This is the fifth and the final of the five episode miniseries to air on Nickelodeon.
  • SpongeBob mentioned the Great Barrier Reef in The Masterpiece and Mr. Krabs in Wet Painters.
  • The Great Barrier Reef is an actual giant ring of Coral Reefs located in Australia.
  • This had a 10 hour marathon leading up to this episode starting from 7 a.m.
  • In the Baytona 500, it appears that the SquarePants family car won the race and was faster than the other cars.
  • After SpongeBob begins the story, everyone except he and Patrick weren't seen or mentioned again, so it's unknown if they liked the story or not after hearing it.
  • When the car is up in the sky (in the clouds), it looks like it's moving slower.
  • When Partrick was repeating 'road', it references what he did in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" , when he and SpongeBob saw the road on the other side of the abyss
  • This is the first time we hear Mrs. Squarepants sing.
  • SpongeBob's parents seem to like Patrick in this episode, as in past episodes they got annoyed by him.
  • The outhouse is much bigger on the inside than the outside.
  • This episode could be an allusion to 1987 film, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the 2005 film, Are We There Yet?, and the 1994 film, Dumb and Dumber.
  • This is the second time it is mentioned that Mrs. Squarepants's maiden name was Bubblebottom. The first time was in "Whelk Attack".
  • Baytona and Basscar are references to Daytona and Nascar.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick jump off the cliff, it is similar to what they did in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. They might have even referenced it when Patrick said he saw it in a movie.
  • It was weird that the fruitfly could breathe underwater.
  • Even though the Krabs mailbox had only one letter, which was for Mr. Krabs, Pearl goes to SpongeBob's house. Because she, like Sandy, has a crush on him. You only yet find that out on the last and most recent episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • How could Patrick be sitting in the car and then suddenly end up on the car's front window?
  • There is a sign that says "Probably Pretty Far".
  • The outhouse's interior resembles that of a sauna.
  • SpongeBob playing the ocarina and causing animals to follow him may be a reference to two things: the game, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. In one part of the game, Link uses the ocarina to get Cucco Chicks to follow him around, but another possibility is 'Pied Piper of Hamelin'.
  • In this episode Patrick is claustophobic but in Wishing You Well he shows nothing of claustophobia.
    • It is possible that he developed claustophobia overtime.
  • In Driven to Tears SpongeBob's parents didn't have car but in this episode they have a station wagon. It could be possible they bought the station wagon overtime.
  • This is the second episode where Patrick is mistaken as luggage.
  • When Patrick spelled his name "Pat" the P is backwards due to his stupidy.
