Plot

The episode begins with Squidward leaving his house with his work hat and bicycle which he proceeds to mount before riding off to work at the Krusty Krab. He rides past a tall tree next to Patrick's house which is normally absent from the series. High up in the tree is a small box in which SpongeBob and Patrick are sitting, both giggling profusely. SpongeBob observes that Squidward is below and says so by beginning each word in the sentence with a "w". The two friends laugh, alerting Squidward to their lofty presence. SpongeBob also observes that Squidward is going to work. Patrick and SpongeBob exchange several words (all beginning with "w"s). Squidward approaches the base of the tree and asks if "that's some kind stupid, secret code". SpongeBob tells Squidward that he is not a member of the club to which Squidward mocks them. SpongeBob innocently tells Squidward he couldn't get in even if he tried. Squidward responds that he is "a member of over 20 different exclusive clubs all across the sea bottom." SpongeBob and Patrick mistakenly think Squidward is talking about his nose. Patrick tells him that he and his nose will definitely not fit in. Enraged, Squidward tells them they know nothing of fitting in before he proceeds to climb the tree. SpongeBob and Patrick frantically tell Squidward to stop but he does not. Patrick tells Squidward he won't fit in, but Squidward crawls into the tiny box. As it turns out, SpongeBob and Patrick were being serious as Inside, the 3 are extremely cramped. Squidward states the obvious by saying there is no room. SpongeBob and Patrick tell him that is what they've been trying to say; they've been stuck in the tree for 3 days. Since Squidward is stuck as well, SpongeBob and Patrick begin the initiation ceremony by singing "Welcome to Our Club", but Squidward stops them. Squidward attempts to get out be pulling on a smaller tree. He manages to get the tree to double over and he is about to finally crawl out when the second tree snaps, launching them through the sky. They fly over a kelp forest, where a lost couple is trapped. The man says "Make a wish, Honey."

The threesome crash in a small clearing in a distant section of the kelp forest. SpongeBob and Patrick begin to jump and shout joyfully while Squidward begins to panic at being lost, especially with SpongeBob and Patrick. Squidward asks why every eleven minutes of his life must be filled with misery (a subtle reference to each episode's eleven minute time length.) SpongeBob and Patrick try to comfort Squidward by telling him it could be worse: he could be bald and half a big nose, the two defining characteristics of his appearance. Squidward announces that this is the end to which a surprised Patrick, who has completed his and SpongeBob's coffin already and is working on Squidward's, asks, "It's not?", after SpongeBob says it's not over. SpongeBob says they will survive as they are a club and as long as they have the magic conch shell, the club symbol which SpongeBob and Patrick treat as prophetic and all-knowing. They believe the magic conch should never be questioned and should always be consulted before any action is taken. SpongeBob asks it what they must do to escape the kelp forest; the conch says, "Nothing". Squidward is enraged unlike the other two who have taken quiet, unmoving sitting positions on the ground. They are unresponsive to Squidward's outburst of anger. He announces that he intends to escape the forest and get back to sanity by himself, before walking away. Some time passes and a terrified Squidward is seen running through the darkened forest. He sees light ahead and rushes toward it. As he bursts into the open, he rejoices in the fact that he is free...only to see SpongeBob and Patrick still sitting a few yards away. Even more time passes, and by now, Squidward has dismantled the box in order to build a shelter. He has a hat made out of some dried plant and is sitting by a small campfire. He is holding an empty frying pan over the fire. A small bug scurries past, but Squidward catches it and proceeds to cook it. He taunts SpongeBob and Patrick (who are still sitting) with the frying pan, telling them they haven't eaten in days. He tells them they can't have food anyways because their club President is the conch shell. He proceeds to say, "As if the answers to all your problems will fall right out of the sky! (laugh) Fall right out of the sky!"

Above the forest, a damaged plane is seen falling right out of the sky. One of the pilots, in order to save the plane, lightens it by dropping the load: picnic equipment. The plane flies off instead of crashing into the kelp forest. The equipment lands around SpongeBob and Patrick who now become animated and praise the magic conch. Squidward is extremely shocked and walks over to the two who are devouring a table full of delicious foods such as cake, sandwiches, turkey, pie, and hamburgers. Squidward says he was kidding about early and asks if he is still a member of the club. SpongeBob tells him that he is still a member. Squidward cannot decide what to choose, and forcibly following SpongeBob's suggestion of asking the conch shell, he does so. It tells him he cannot have either of the two items he asked for. He tries another one, and the conch says no. After several funny questions (all of which the conch replies "no" to), Squidward still has nothing to eat. He becomes enraged and is about to through a tantrum when a Park Ranger enters the clearing. Squidward tells him he has been stranded with SpongeBob, Patrick, and the magic conch shell for weeks. The words "magic conch shell" intrigue the ranger who pulls out an identical conch. SpongeBob and Patrick are delighted to meet a "club member." The ranger tells them that his conch advised him to look for them. The three club members praise the magic conch before asking it how to get out of the kelp forest. It tells them, "Nothing." Following the conch's advice, they do nothing and assume sitting positions on the ground. Squidward walks over and bows to the pressure. He praises the conch before taking a motionless position also.

Trivia/Goofs

  • This is the first episode to world premiere on DVD first, on the List of SpongeBob SquarePants Media|Nautical Nonsense/Sponge Buddies DVD. 117 days later, it premiered on TV.
  • When Squidward holds the conch and asks if he can have something to eat, he pulls the string. There is a close-up of the conch and when it says, "No," his tentacle is yellow. This is because the producers lost focusing track and thought it was

SpongeBob who was holding the Magic Conch Shell.

  • This is the fourth episode where the laws of science are defied and there is a fire underwater. The first 3 were Patty Hype, Life of Crime, and Procrastination.
  • The clubhouse disappears later on. It could be, however, that Patrick built the coffins out of the wood. Or Squidward could have built his shelter out of it.
  • It appears that they were only in the kelp forest for one evening. However, Squidward says that Patrick hasn't eaten in days. It is later changed to weeks when Squidward says that they have been stranded for weeks.
  • Squidward says "Why must every 11 minutes of my life be filled with misery?" This is a reference to an episode's length. This was also referenced in Nature Pants and Missing Identity.
  • When the ranger arrives and shows his magic conch shell, the original conch disappears.
  • This is the first episode where the closed captions were ahead of the actual lines. Most of the episodes in Season 3 from here on will also contain that error.
  • The Magic Conch Shell is a parody of the Magic 8-Ball.
  • SpongeBob and Patrick have been stuck in the clubhouse for 3 days, but when they land in the forest, they somehow landed outside of the clubhouse.
  • One of the pilots in the plane looks like Scooter. This may or may not be him.
  • It is unknown if Frank and Suzy are lost.

Lord of the Flies

This episode could possibly be a reference to the popular novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, in ways such as...

  • SpongeBob and his friends crashed landed in a deserted place.
  • They have a sense of order and society in the form of a conch shell.
  • Squidward refuses to listen to the conch any longer and goes off to make his own fire and hunt for food.
  • A plane (boat in the story) flies over them and does not see them, even though it could have rescued them.
  • They are rescued at the brink of insanity.
