"Dying for Pie" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season two.

Brief summary: Squidward accidentally lets SpongeBob eat an exploding pie. To alleviate his guilt, Squidward resolves to make SpongeBob's few remaining hours enjoyable. And that makes Squidward more miserable than ever!

Plot

At the Krusty Krab, it's Employee Brotherhood Day. Squidward doesn't know that on Employee Brotherhood Day, all employees must exchange gifts that they made themselves, and SpongeBob gives Squidward a sweater made out of his eyelashes. When Squidward scoffs at his heartfelt gift, SpongeBob begins to cry copiously, eventually handing Squidward a sweater made from his tears.

Squidward wishes he could buy a gift instead of make one, and sees a group of pirates outside with a sack of pies. He goes outside and the pirates say that they're just pie shaped bombs, but after Squidward offers to buy one, one of the pirates says they were kidding, and Squidward buys a pie for $25. He lies to Mr. Krabs, saying that he made it. Mr. Krabs says he has to inspect it, and eat a bit to see that it isn't horrible. He breaks a tiny bit off the crust and says, "This would go great with some milk!" When he trips over and the bit of the pie explodes and wrecks the back of the Krusty Krab, Squidward and Mr. Krabs are blown away. When they arrive at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob acts as if he ate the pie, but it is unknown if he even ate anything. Mr. Krabs tells Squidward that the pie would explode around sunset when it reached SpongeBob's lower intestine, so Squidward decides to make SpongeBob's remaining hours fun. After being asked what the funnest things he likes to do are, SpongeBob presents a list of the funnest things he likes to do.

After remembering SpongeBob explodes at sunset, Squidward builds a brick wall between them. At sunset, there is an explosion, but it's actually a bubble that SpongeBob blew (It's in the shape of a bomb and explodes). There is another explosion which knocks the wall down, crushing Squidward. Squidward comes out and finds that SpongeBob is still alive. He says he's supposed to explode after eating the pie. SpongeBob doesn't seem to remember, then says 'Oh, you mean this pie!" He takes the explosive pie out of his pocket and says that he was saving it for them to share. He prepares to eat it even though Squidward just said it was a bomb. When he trips over, the bomb hits Squidward in the face and goes off, demolishing all of Bikini Bottom in a huge explosion. Squidward miraculously survives, uttering a very plain "Ow".

Trivia/Goofs

  • This episode reveales the name of the red fish with a blue shirt -- Frank.
  • The Operation Crossroads nuclear test, footage of which is used to represent the explosion near the end of the episode, was conducted at Bikini Atoll. SpongeBob SquarePants is set in the fictional city of Bikini Bottom, which is named after this atoll (possibly indirectly, via the bikini swimsuit).
  • The Bikini Atoll explosion is also seen on the episode "The Krusty Plate".
  • In the footage of the nuclear test, you can see that it almost looks like a crown.
  • Between 1946 and 1958, Bikini Atoll was the testing ground of eleven hydrogen bomb/atomic bomb tests, meaning that Bikini Bottom must have been vaporized or burned down several times in those twelve years. A possible reference to this is made by Mr Krabs who says, "I've seen this before. Eleven times as a matter of fact." Mr. Krabs was in the Navy, (revealed in Shell of a Man, possibly an underwater version of a ground force division) so he should have experienced these events.
  • The Krusty Krab is both damaged and then destroyed in this episode. Mr. Krabs' office blew up after he dropped a piece of the pie, and the restaurant was destroyed later along with the rest of Bikini Bottom.
  • This is the first (and probably final) time blood is seen on the show.
  • If Spongebob didn't eat the pie that morning, then why was he licking his fingers? Although, it is possible he was doing so because some of the filling got on his finger when he picked up the note from Squidward. It is also very possible that, in between him finding the pie and returning to the office, he ate something else, like a Krabby Patty.
  • The explosion happened in the middle of the city, not on the cliff they were on.
  • After Squidward scolds Mr.Krabs for making Employee Brotherhood Day, when he says "that guy!", Mr. Krabs is seen clearly with no legs. This is most likely an animation error.
  • 16th time Patrick doesn't appear.
  • When the brick wall that is separating Squidward and SpongeBob during the sunset scene breaks down after the bubble bomb explosion, a brick flies out of it. During the second bubble explosion, the brick is suddenly back in the wall when it's in the air, and dissapears again when it falls on top of Squidward.
  • Squidward is seen driving a boatmobile in this episode, but he is frequently seen using his bicycle to work.
  • There is a bumper sticker on Squidward's boatmobile that reads "Don't ask about my day".
  • Spongebob breaks the fourth wall when he says hi to Mr. Krabs while Squidward was remembering him saying what he said about how Spongebob had until sunset.
  • When Squidward brings the pie into Mr.Krabs's office, they are both fatter and shorter.
  • At the end of the episode when Squidward is talking to SpongeBob there is no rock. but when Spongebob takes out the pie a rock appears and SpongeBob is moved slightly to the right
  • The music Unkown Tracks 6 playing a different music note when SpongeBob gives Squidward a knock knock joke will be heard again in the newer episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants like Ditchin'.
  • When Squidward first puts on SpongeBob's eyelash sweater, he leaves a big hole in the head hole. In the next cut with him and the sweater, his head fits perfectly.
  • In Squidward's imagination, when SpongeBob explodes, Tom Smith is seen as one of the customers before SpongeBob's bits.
  • On SpongeBob's list, one of the things he put on there is 'Introduce friend in a salmon suit'. However, when SpongeBob checks off juggling, he checks off to introduce in a salmon suit a second time, when this was already done.
  • Spongebob says Squidward is his best friend, although Patrick is; though he could just refer to all his close friends as his "best" friends. (Note that Spongebob proabably believes that Squidward and himself are closer than they really are)
