The hotline[1] (also known as SpongeBob's phone[2] or simply just the phone[3][4]) is a purple phone that first appears in the episode "Procrastination" and makes a sentient appearance in "Little Yellow Book." It is usually used and functions similarly to that of the shellphone and it is usually seen owned by SpongeBob and Squidward (with a few exceptions).

Description

The dial hotline's model sheet

It looks like an ordinary purple phone. However, it can form a mouth with sharp teeth and a tongue. It also has a pink variant (first seen in "Squid's Visit") and also is sometimes depicted with a dial instead of buttons (this is confirmed as it was originally going to feature the dial in "Procrastination," but was changed to the buttons which is kept through most depictions).

Role in series

"Procrastination"

SpongeBob uses it to place a call to Patrick in order to have an engaging conversation with him.

"Party Pooper Pants"

Patrick uses the hotline (using its dial variant) to take a call from SpongeBob while he is using the payphone. However, Patrick slams the door on SpongeBob when he tries to get inside, as he confuses the ice sculpture in the punch to be him. SpongeBob then comments that they should not put the phone in the punch.

"SpongeHenge"

SpongeBob uses it to place a call to Mr. Krabs in order for him to go to work.

"Krabby Road"

Squidward uses it to answer a call from SpongeBob about his workout.

"Squid's Visit"

SpongeBob uses it to answer a call from Squidward in order for him to come over to his house. Squidward's hotline in this episode is shown pink instead of purple unlike in "Krabby Road."

"Gullible Pants"

Mr. Krabs uses the hotline to call emergency services after hurting his claw.

"Balloons"

SpongeBob uses it to place a call to Squidward, with Squidward's yelling helping SpongeBob inflate the balloons.

"Tentacle-Vision"

Squidward angrily calls Zeus the Guitar Lord on the pink variant of the hotline, after he unintentionally got Fab and Fancy! cancelled. Shortly after, Squidward calls Bikini Bottom Public Access after Zeus told him that anyone could make their own show.

"The Monster Who Came to Bikini Bottom"

Two hotlines can be seen being used by SpongeBob and Patrick to have an easier time getting extra ice to the Krusty Krab.

"The Abrasive Side"

Gary uses the hotline to order the Abrasive Sponge. The hotline uses its dial variant in this episode.

"Accidents Will Happen"

Squidward uses the hotline to attempt calling the Office Workers Safety Department. Unfortunately, Mr. Krabs quickly snatches the hotline from Squidward and proceeds to eat it.

"Are You Happy Now?"

SpongeBob uses it to place a call to Squidward, Gary, and himself. This leads to both Squidward's phone and SpongeBob's hotline to get destroyed.

"Home Sweet Rubble"

Patrick uses it to place a call to Sandy. At the end of the episode, SpongeBob uses it to place a call to the operator and the City Hall Office of Broken Dreams before hanging up in order to feed Gary.

"Little Yellow Book"

During the flashback when Squidward is reading through SpongeBob's work diary, SpongeBob gets a call from Squidward. SpongeBob obliviously thinks that it was some important news that Squidward needed to tell him, with the hotline becoming sentient, as it starts to growl at him (signifying Squidward's anger). It is then revealed that Squidward was extremely upset due to Gary chewing up his stuff. However, SpongeBob is oblivious to this fact and takes it as nice advice.

"Grandmum's the Word"

The hotline appears in the Krusty Krab, where a customer calls Squidward if they are closed on Tuesdays. Squidward angrily states that they are not closed on that day.

"Girls' Night Out"

Sandy uses the hotline to call Karen and Mrs. Puff for a night out.

"Jolly Lodgers"

The hotline appears in Hotel Halibut, where Squidward unknowingly uses it to tell SpongeBob and Patrick on the phone to be his room service.

"Join The Nickelodeon Birthday Club!"

SpongeBob uses it to place a call to a human for their birthday.

"Pat the Dog"

Squidward uses the pink variant of the hotline to call Marvin, claiming that there is a worm outside his house.

Trivia

  • SpongeBob's hotline is his second-most-frequently-appearing phone, appearing less frequently than his shellphone but more frequently than his other phones from various episodes.
  • A similar-looking and functioning phone also appears in The Patrick Star Show, which also became sentient.
    • Ironically enough, both phones appear in the episode "Jolly Lodgers."
