Synopsis

Patrick and Squidina have breakfast.

One morning, Patrick is woken up by his pet urchin, Ouchie. After playing with Ouchie, he goes through his morning routine. He tries to head to his show, only for the bedroom door to take him to a castle hallway, where a knight charges after him. Squidina shows him where his studio is, and he sings a song introducing the show. When Squidina asks what the episode will be about, Patrick realizes how hungry he is and goes to find food. In the meantime, Squidina plays a commercial for the Chum Bucket.

Patrick goes for breakfast, but his family is already done eating. They leave, and Patrick tries to find food on his own. He first meets the Dartfish Family under the kitchen table, and they offer him what little food they have, but he declines. He goes to the hallway and looks under the rug, but only finds Shmandor. He goes to GrandPat's room, and GrandPat tells him a story about living in prehistoric times, where dinosaurs hunted him down as food.

After GrandPat's story, Patrick gets the idea to do a cooking segment on his show and make something to eat. He puts a bunch of garbage in a tray, then cooks it at a high temperature, reducing everything to dust. Squidina wraps up the show, but Patrick realizes he still has not eaten anything. He visits the Dartfish Family, who are now having dinner, but turns it down again. Bunny comes in with a trasherole, having learned the recipe from watching Patrick's show. The family eats dinner, and Patrick goes to bed.

Production

In an interview with the Encyclopedia SpongeBobia Discord server on December 13, 2020, Dave Cunningham stated that the "Squidward dinosaur" would return in an upcoming episode. The character, officially named Squidasaurus Rex, would eventually reappear here, featured in a segment where GrandPat teaches Patrick about primal hunting and in the present day, eating a young adult Squidward.[3]

Kaz confirmed that he had wrote the pilot for The Patrick Star Show on June 1, 2021,[4] with help from the series' writing crew.

The episode itself was confirmed on June 15, 2021 by Gracenote.[5]

This episode was added to the United States Copyright Office on June 25, 2021.[6]

Mike Geiger posted a storyboard panel from this episode on July 7, 2021.[7]

Notes

Dave Cunningham said that the crew "all viewed the role of the pilot ("Late") mostly as setting the table for the series as opposed to telling a traditional story."[8]

Simon Edwards, who plussed the first three and a half minutes of this episode, recalls this being the first time he handled Squidina in the series' production.[9] For "The Patrick Song," Edwards was given character drawings by Kaz to "amp up the weird[ness]" of the episode.[2] He ultimately stated that the episode was his first taste of the "playhouse" theme of the series meant to separate it from SpongeBob SquarePants.[10]

Joann Chang recalls the scene featuring a key in Patrick's mouth being one of the first character cleanups she did for the series.[11]

Shire, Dan Geovanelli, Benny Kruderock and Zak Propadopadingdong, respectively, referencing crew members Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller, Andrew Goodman, Luke Brookshier, Danny Giovannini, Ben Kurzrock, and Kaz.
