Character

Maestro Mackerel is the conductor of the Bikini Bottom Philharmonic Orchestra who appears in the episode "Snooze You Lose." He is portrayed by Oscar-winning actor J. K. Simmons.

Description

He is an elderly, olive-green fish with gray hair similar to Beethoven's, and wears an orange sweater and a blue blazer. He will not tolerate bad musicians, going as far as to wrap their instruments around their heads in anger.

Role in episode

Maestro is seen at the Philharmonic Concert Hall, where he is holding auditions for the Bikini Bottom Philharmonic Orchestra. After angrily yelling at a trumpet player, an unconscious Squidward, piloted by SpongeBob and Patrick, arrives for his audition, and annoys Maestro with his clarinet playing. However, "Squidward" then starts playing beautifully, stunning Maestro.

After Squidward regains control of his body, Maestro calls Squidward a musical wizard and urges him to continue his clarinet playing. Squidward starts playing a horrid tune, and after a montage of disastrous reactions to the music, it is later implied that Maestro denied Squidward a place in the orchestra.

Trivia

  • He is a reference to Terence Fletcher, conductor from the 2014 film Whiplash. They are both portrayed by J. K. Simmons.
