Plot
SpongeBob and Patrick are in Jellyfish Fields blowing bubbles. SpongeBob blows a bubble that engulfs them boths, and floats into a nearby cave. The bubble suddenly pops on an ancient piece of gold. Eager to discover what exactly it is, they go to the Bikini Bottom Museum where they find Squidward. Squidward, at first thinks that SpongeBob and patrick were stealing, when he realizes that they found the missing half. By this tiem, Sandy and Mr. Krabs join them. The pieces of gold are reunited which brings SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy to journey to Atlantis by a luxurious bus (called a "van" by Squidward)piloted by a robot and fueled by "song." However, Plankton sneaks inside the bus's front compartmtent and plans to steal the weapons of Atlantis. Once they arrive there,(accidentally crash-landing in a topiary garden) they meet Lord Royal Highness who shows them the riches, knowledge, and art of Atlantis.
Unfortunately, Plankton escapes from the compartment and makes it into the weapons room and commandeers a giant battle tank out of dozens, or hundreds of warfare. Meanwhile, Mr. Krabs enjoys the money vault, Sandy enjoys the science lab, and Squidward enjoys the hall of art(the rooms each were planning to see). In the money vault, money, gold, and prized objects are found and mostly stashed in Mr. Krabs's pants pockets. In the science lab, Sandy enjoys the devices, a biomass converting device that turns any household object into ice cream (a bug the Atlantians haven't worked out), a germ-fighting, interactive, micro video game, and makes an automatic feeding device. And in the Hall of Arts, Squidward journeys through paintings, gets modeled by artmakers, and even makes his own painting, claiming to know more art than 4 years of community college.
But everything goes wrong when SpongeBob and Patrick take a picture of them with the oldest living bubble and the bubble pops. At dinner, LRH says the bubble they popped was a prop for the tourists, but when he shows them the real bubble, Patrick takes a picture of it and it pops too. The Atlantians then turn from peaceful citizens to angry warriors avenging their most prized possesion. But when Plankton arrives, he fires the tank at SpongeBob, the gang, and the Alantian warriors, but it turns out to be a giant ice cream maker. When he angrilly jumps out and kicks the tank (injuring is foot in the process of kicking it), LRH sees him and uses him as a replacement for the bubble, but more exciting, calling him a talking speck. He'll be back yet again. Against everyone's wishes, SpongeBob and friends ride the bus back to Bikini Bottom, although SpongeBob is eager to return. They probably won't be back because LRH had one of the warriors toss the gold medallian in the dumpster.
Reception
Atlantis SquarePantis was generally given mixed reviews by critics and fans alike.[3] Tom Shales, a television critic for The Washington Post, lambasted the movie in a November 12, 2007 review. In the review, titled Squeezing The Life Out of SpongeBob, Shales wrote that "the funniest thing about the film is its title" and "a typical episode has about as many laughs as this inflated version does". Shales criticized the amount of musical numbers in Atlantis SquarePantis, calling them "numbing". He concluded the review with the statement that the show was "flat" and "unimpressive".[1] However, Atlantis SquarePantis recorded nine million viewers, beating every 8pm show on broadcast television that night except Dancing With the Stars.[2]
