Bob Esponja is the European Spanish dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. It is currently airing on Nickelodeon Commercial Light and Clan, it has previously aired on Antena 3, La 1, Cuatro, and Neox. It is part of Template:ISS.

History

Nickelodeon

The dub made its debut on Nickelodeon Spain on March 4, 2000. However, on September 1, 2009, the dub would later simulcast with the European Portuguese dub along with an audio track, due to a proposed merger with European Portuguese feed, now naming as "Nickelodeon Iberia."

In March 2020, both feeds made a proposed merger with the Walloon feed, which airs the French dub. This would later commence in April, which would later be renamed as "Nickelodeon Commercial Light."

Clan

The show premiered on December 12, 2005, the same day the channel officially launched.

Between 2016 and 2017 Clan TV started to censor episodes of the series (mainly from the first seasons). They broadcast them at times like 6:00 with a +18 above the channel's logo. (is currently only issued The Great Snail Race and Mid-Life Crustacean. The other chapters are not broadcasted, they are skipped.)

Trivia

General

• Some characters like Bubble Bass have had many different voice actors.
• Mrs. Puff's voice changes in some episodes.
• Mermaid Man's voice is different in "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II." It is unknown where Ángel Rodríguez was when the episode was being dubbed.
• Squidward's Spanish name, Calamardo, is based on "calamari," a type of squid and the name Eduardo (Edward). The Spanish word for squid is also calamar.
• In the first season, Template:Data:Links was called "Don Cangrejo." To avoid confusion between this dub and the Latin American Spanish dub, he was renamed to "Sr. Cangrejo" by the second season.
• Template:Data:Links's name changes throughout the episodes:
  • In "Band Geeks," his first name was "Esquiliam," a translated pronunciation of his English name. His last name was kept the same as in English.
  • In "Squilliam Returns," his name is "Guimardo" (A mix of the name "Guillermo" and "Calamardo")
  • In "Professor Squidward," his name is "Calamarón el Guay III" (Squilliam the Cool Guy III, "-ón" being a suffix for big objects),
  • In "House Fancy," his name is "Calamardi Elegantínez" (Elegantínez coming from "elegante" (fancy), and "-ez," a common suffix of Spanish last names that is the equivalent of the "-son" suffix of English last names.)
  • In "Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful" and "I ♥ Dancing," his name is "Calamarino" (from "calamar" (squid) and "-ino," a Spanish suffix for small objects)
  • Lastly, in "Back to the Past," he was mistaken for Squidward by the dubbing crew and was also called "Calamardo." He even had the same voice as him.
• There are three versions of the intro's lyrics: the first one was used from the first to the second season, the second one was used from the third season onwards and the third one was used in the first movie.
• In "Plankton Retires," the Krusty Krab (Krustáceo Krujiente) was called Kangrejo Krujiente when Perch Perkins (Perca Perkins) is asking Plankton.
• Until season 11, Glove World was translated as Mundo del Guante. It has been renamed to Mundo Guante without "del" (of)
• The Spanish Tide and Seek DVD includes partially redubbed versions of each episode where every character but SpongeBob is referred to by their English name instead of their Spanish name.
• Between the second half of season 5 and the first few episodes of season 6 ("Goo Goo Gas" and "Choir Boys"), Squidward sounds different than other episodes. Alberto Closas Jr., who voices Squidward in Spain, had been fired of the dubbing studio due to budget cuts. The dub was moved to SDI Media Spain, and Alberto Closas Jr. was rehired. At those moments, Miguel Campos voiced him.
• On September 13, 2011, Alex Saudinós, SpongeBob's voice in this dub, defended the entire series against a now defunct studio which stated that SpongeBob could lead to attention deficit in younger viewers.
  • Note: the page and audio in the page are in Spanish. Spanish knowledge is required.
• Due to text not being translated directly in the animation, the translations for said text is read by a narrator.
  • The title cards aren't edited with their respective language as in other places. Instead, the translated episode title is read by a narrator.
• The version of "Truth or Square" used is the 44 minute version and the episode's original production title "Stuck in the Freezer" is used for the chapter instead of its current title.
• In Clan TVE, in the second part of "Truth or Square," the part of Patchy's extravaganza is used again, after this comes the title card and Patchy riding on his boat looking for Bikini Atoll.

Truth or Square subtitles translation for Clan TVE

• In "Truth or Square" (the TV special), the songs are in English instead of Spanish, though they are given translations in the form of subtitles for Clan TV airings, but there are no subtitles for the songs on Nickelodeon Spain airings, the translation used for the Clan TVE subtitles are literal translations, for example: in the SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song, Painty the Pirate does not say "Igual que los peces el puede flotar," he says "Salta por la borda y zambúllete como un pez" making it more like the theme song of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
• RandomLand is called in this dub SinRumboLandia, which translated literally to English is "NoCourseLand"</nowiki>.
• This dub does not have any censorship. All episodes are dubbed and are aired.
  • However, in "SpongeBob in RandomLand," the U.S censorship for the infamous Red Mist reference is used, but with the Red Mist audio.
• The episode "Pat the Horse" was translated to "¡Arre, Patricio!," which means "Giddy up, Patrick!"
• For a long time, the Clan TVE website did not have a SpongeBob section, nor for any other Nickelodeon cartoon. Nowadays, there does exist a section for SpongeBob in the website.
• In "Rodeo Daze," Plankton is dubbed by Alberto Closas Jr., the voice of Squidward. This was likely because Juan Rueda was either ill or
• In "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?," the theme song it is not changed to WhoBob WhatPants, but remains the same as the normal theme song
• In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, to the Chum Bucket they don't call it "Cubo de Cebo," they call it "Cubo Amigo" which, when translated to English, would be "Friendly Bucket."
• In "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!," Potty the Parrot calls Patchy the Pirate "retrasado".
• In Amazon Prime Video, there is a redubbed version of "The Algae's Always Greener" and "SpongeGuard on Duty."

Errors

• In "Ripped Pants," Larry calls Sandy by her original name instead of Arenita at the beginning.
  • Something similar happens in "Hall Monitor," when Patrick says he saw the maniac, SpongeBob calls Patrick by his original name instead of Patricio.
  • In the episode Fools in April Squidward instead of saying "Fondo de Bikini" says "Bikini Bottom" as in the original dubbing.
• In "Roller Cowards," whenever they mention Glove World!, it is called by it's original name instead of Mundo del Guante/Mundo Guante.
• Bikini Bottom (Fondo de Bikini) was accidentally called by its original name in "The Ballad of Filthy Muck," when the narrator said, "Parque de Bikini Bottom," when it should be "Parque de Fondo de Bikini" (Bikini Bottom Park). He said it half Spanish, half English, which is ironic.
• In "Squidward's School for Grown-Ups," Squidward's line near the end is cut.
• In "Squidville," when SpongeBob says "Any second now," this dialogue is not spoken.
• In "Back to the Past," Squilliam was confused for Squidward by the dubbing crew. He has the same voice actor as well, Alberto Closas Jr.
• In "Pizza Delivery," when SpongeBob says "That lucky is going to have the first Krabby Patty pizza ever" he says: "</nowiki>Ese cliente afortunado va a llevarse la primera cangreburger." ("That lucky customer is going to carry off/take the first Krabby Patty") when he should have said something like "Ese cliente afortunado va a llevarse la primera cangrepizza" ("That lucky customer is going to carry off/take the first Krabby Pizza").
