Synopsis
The episode begins at the Krusty Krab, with Mr. Krabs getting a notice from the Fry Cook Union that since SpongeBob has accumulated too much vacation time, he needs to take a vacation. If this policy is not followed, he will have to pay a fine. SpongeBob goes home quickly afterwards, but the next day, he goes back to the Krusty Krab again, thinking it was just for going home early. Mr. Krabs reminds SpongeBob that he's on vacation meaning SpongeBob cannot work during the vacation time, and also gets Patrick to be SpongeBob's replacement fry cook for the time being.
SpongeBob is tired of being at home, so he decides to go to the Krusty Krab as a customer. Mr. Krabs accepts this, but when he sees SpongeBob trying to help Patrick, he kicks him out again. SpongeBob still misses the Krusty Krab, so he tries several more attempts at getting to the Krusty Krab, such as coming out of a toilet and pretending to be a delivery man, only to fail each time.
Eventually, Mr. Krabs gets tired of this, so he sends SpongeBob to the middle of a forest, away from the Krusty Krab. SpongeBob thinks Mr. Krabs is trying to replace him permanently, so he goes into Patrick's house to scare him out of being a fry cook. At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs thinks Patrick is cooking Krabby Patties at rapid speed, but sees it is actually SpongeBob in a Patrick outfit. Mr. Krabs wanted to know why SpongeBob did that as the latter breaks down in tears, telling him that he loved the Krusty Krab so much, that he couldn't stay away. But, as it turns out, SpongeBob has used up his entire accumulated vacation time, and thus the union can't fine him anymore. Mr. Krabs reveals he only saved a dime, which is more than SpongeBob makes a year, and SpongeBob happily continues working at the Krusty Krab as the episode ends.

Trivia
General
- This episode's alternate titles were "Bummer Summer," "Bummer Summer Vacation," "Homework,"[5] and "Obligation Vacation."[6]
- When SpongeBob is on a "vacation," he sings like he sang "I'm ready, promotion" in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
- When SpongeBob is backing away from the Krusty Krab, a different sound is used instead of SpongeBob's squeaky shoes.
- The part where SpongeBob says, "I've been waiting for you, Patrick!" has become popular on YouTube.
- This episode is bookended by Sunny Samoa.
- This is the first episode for a few things:
- The first episode since "Hooky" in season 1 to use "Sunny Samoa" as the title card music.
- Dani Michaeli's first episode as a writer. He left the show after season 8, but returned briefly in season 10 as a guest writer.
- The first episode where "Nautical Hijinx" plays.
- Robertryan Cory's first episode where he isn't a prop designer.
- This is the second episode for two things:
- The second episode where Patrick is shown as a Krusty Krab employee. The first is "Big Pink Loser."
- The second episode where Patrick is shown with ears, and the first one where he notices he had any. The first is "Survival of the Idiots," where Patrick says, "Who you callin' pinhead?"
- This is the last episode to play "So Tired" until "ChefBob."
- In SpongeBob Comics No. 5, there is a comic strip titled "Day Off/Off Day" which has the exact same plot, except Patrick doesn't replace SpongeBob.
- It's implied SpongeBob barely makes over ten cents a year at the Krusty Krab, as when Mr. Krabs reveals the union saved him a dime, SpongeBob says that's more than he makes a year.
- However in "Squeaky Boots", Mr. Krabs pays SpongeBob more than ten cents.
Cultural references
- This episode's title references summer vacation.
- The magazine Squidward is reading is called Squid Ink. This is a parody of the 1991 magazine Teen Ink.
Errors
- When SpongeBob returns home and surprises Gary, he says, "Well, good night, Gary," even though it is daytime outside.
- SpongeBob seems to be wearing his pants while he is in the shower.
- When Patrick is looking at the reflection of himself in SpongeBob's spatula, his reflection has pink eyelids instead of their correct purple.
- The grill is on the back wall instead of being in the front of the kitchen right below the ordering window.
- This also occurs in "Nature Pants," "Your Shoe's Untied," and "My Pretty Seahorse."
- When SpongeBob gasps at Patrick when he sees Patrick cooking Krabby Patties at the wrong temperature, the window of the Krusty Krab is way bigger than normal.
- When SpongeBob turns the grill temperature to 298 degrees Fahrenheit, the patties on the grill had disappeared from the shot before.
- SpongeBob's eyelashes are missing as he starts playing with his official Krusty Krab playset.
- When SpongeBob admits it is unhealthy to think about the Krusty Krab while on vacation and he needs to get out of the house, his legs are missing.
- In the same scene, SpongeBob's mouth disappears for a frame.
- When Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to back away from the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket and its path are missing.
- While pretending to be a steaming, hot bun delivery man, SpongeBob drives a truck even though he doesn't have a license and doesn't know how to drive a boatmobile in other episodes.
- When Mr. Krabs is driving and says, "Uh-huh," his eyes are white instead of pale green.
- When SpongeBob glares at the spatula and acts like a dog, one of SpongeBob's corneas are colored blue instead of black for a split second.
- When Patrick is running home and singing, he is coming from the left side of his rock, but in the previous scene, the left side leads towards the woods where Mr. Krabs got rid of SpongeBob.
- When Mr. Krabs shows the coin to SpongeBob, the wall behind SpongeBob turns pink-blue, as in the hall, instead of a shade of gray.
-
SpongeBob wearing pants in the shower.
-
Patrick's reflection with pink eyelids instead of purple.
