Synopsis

The scene opens up with Patrick, dressed in a business suit, asking where he can get something to eat. Squidward walks in and tells him the answer is before him: the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs, dressed in a leotard, jumps out of the Krusty Krab, and SpongeBob slides down a rainbow to his side, and Squidward, who rides a dolphin while holding a plate with Krabby Patties, which Patrick eats. Suddenly, SpongeBob describes Patrick's actions, then the scene turns to him and Mr. Krabs in front of a storyboard planned for a commercial. Mr. Krabs asks why he is in a leotard, and he says it is because he is the mascot. Mr. Krabs does not like this, so he tears up the storyboard, telling him he needs a "masterpiece". Sad, SpongeBob walks to Squidward's counter, sighing. When Squidward ignores him, he sighs repeatedly, each sigh more drawn-out than the one before, until Squidward gets so annoyed that he asks what is troubling him. He tells him about his problems, but Squidward does not care. As he walks into the dining area, Squidward notices a patron squirting ketchup onto a pile of Krabby Patties.

The patron slaps the Krabby Patties off the plate. He asks Squidward for mustard, which he squirts onto a plate. When the patron leaves, Squidward looks at the plate and recognizes it as the art style of Fiasco. Mr. Krabs is about to throw it away when Squidward tells him it is actually a masterpiece. He exclaims: ' This is an authentic Fiasco!', and people run over to him, offering to buy it, but Mr. Krabs, seeing an opportunity to make money, tries to take the artwork from Squidward, and they argue over who really owns it. Just then, Farfel Bainbridge, an art evaluator, comes in and declares the work to be authentic, and thereby a national treasure, thus meaning neither Mr. Krabs nor Squidward own it. Mr. Krabs will allow people to view it in his restaurant free, provided they buy Krabby Patties (two each).

Later, Plankton sees the artwork and mistakes it for garbage. Planning to reverse-engineer the recipe, he steals it. Police officers immediately chased him. They dog him every step of the way, from a movie theater, a grocery store, and a satellite in space. When he loses them, he is baffled as to why the police are chasing him, rather than Mr. Krabs. At night, he knocks on Patrick's rock, but when Patrick answers, he angrily tells him that he has a busy day of doing nothing tomorrow. Plankton goes to SpongeBob's house, using a spoon to hold SpongeBob and Gary hostage, and demands an explanation as to why the police are after him. SpongeBob explains that what he has stolen is, in fact, a priceless work of art. Plankton gets the idea to sell the artwork and declared SpongeBob and Gary to be accomplices to his crime. Patrick comes in and yells at everyone for making so much noise as to keep him awake while eating something.

SpongeBob asks what it is that Patrick ate, and Patrick reveals it was the artwork, which he mistook for hors d'oeuvres. Plankton declares him an accomplice as well. Suddenly, Squidward bursts in with the police then lied to them about all of the noise. When they see Plankton, they immediately arrest him, along with Squidward (for lying to them) & everyone until they can figure this whole situation out. At the police station, Plankton is locked away. Gary, Patrick, and SpongeBob are free since Mr. Krabs explains they were not involved with the theft. However, since the artwork is now in Patrick's stomach, Mr. Krabs has him stand behind an X-Ray machine, which shows the artwork inside him. Fiasco is moved by Patrick's style, stating 'I will never paint again!'. The scene changes to show Squidward, behind bars, asking about his phone call.

Trivia

• Mr. Krabs was right when he said that the art was his as it was made from parts of his restaurant which he owned.
• Mr. Krabs calls Farfel Bainbridge "Farkle."
• The Old Man Jenkins from "My Pretty Seahorse" makes a cameo at the Bikini Bottom Supermarket in this episode.
• In Germany, the episode has two title cards.
• Plankton accused SpongeBob of harvoring an art thief, yet he actually wasn't as all Plankton did was enter his house (not to mention that it was technically breaking into it).
• In this episode, Squidward was blamed in the most unfair, ridiculous way possible. He never did anything as a crime. In fact, he actually helped the police by turning in Plankton.
  • However, the police may have turned in Squidward for being a tattletale. Back in the episode "Driven to Tears," when SpongeBob tried to tell on Patrick to the cops, saying he was going over the speed limit, the police officer actually threatened to run SpongeBob in with him then saying "tattletale."
  • It is possible that Squidward's arrest was for calling the police on SpongeBob, Patrick, and Gary when it was actually Plankton they were after.
  • It is also possible that Squidward could've been framed from the episode "Jailbreak!", when one of Plankton's fellow inmates disguised himself as Squidward to rob the store.
• This is the first time Plankton is in outer space. The second will be "It Came from Goo Lagoon."
• This is the second time Plankton meets Gary. The first was in "Shellback Shenanigans." The third will be in "Pineapple Invasion."
• This is the third time Squidward goes to jail. The first was in "Good Ol' Whatshisname," the second was in "Professor Squidward," and the fourth was in "Squid Defense." Once again, however, no one bails him out.
• This is the fourth time Plankton goes to jail. The first was The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The second was "Krabby Road," and the third was "Sweet and Sour Squid."
• This is another instance where Patrick does something stupid, which causes people to think he has artistic talent. A previous instance was "The Googly Artiste," in which he simply glued Googly eyes onto rocks and other objects, which were considered great art.
• Patrick ate something he should not have before in "Back to the Past"; he ate the tartar sauce Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy were going to use against Man Ray, which allowed the villain to win, thus altering the future.
• Plankton reveals that he has pollen allergies when he sneezed and said, "Blasted pollen allergies!"
• When Plankton hides from the police in the movie theater, the movie that is playing is called Goo Lagoon, which is a spoof of The Blue Lagoon.
• This episode takes place after "Penny Foolish" because in that episode, the Movie Palace was built and reappears in this episode.
• In the episode "Squid's Visit," Squidward said that he has never gone to SpongeBob's house, but he came to SpongeBob's house with the cops to complain about SpongeBob's, Patrick's and Squidward's loudness. It is most likely that this episode took place after "Squid's Visit."
• This episode premiered seven years after the SpongeBob Saves the Day book was released and five years after Remodeling premiered.
• All of the main characters appear except Sandy Cheeks.
• SpongeBob's storyboard showed pictures from that scene, such as Mr. Krabs ripping up the storyboard itself.

Cultural references

• The episode title actually means a thing that is a complete failure, especially in a ludicrous or humiliating way.
• Fiasco is a parody of the famous artist, Pablo Picasso.
• When Squidward is in jail at the end, he said "Hey, don't I get a phone call?" which is a quote from the Daniel and the Lion's Den segment from the first VeggieTales video,"Where's God When I'm S-Scared?"

Errors

• Old Man Jenkins had two looks. First, when Plankton went in the store, and different when he left.
• Dale had a blue shirt, not a red one like the one he usually wears.
• Closed-captions error: "artiste" misspelled as "Ar-teest."
• When Plankton walks to SpongeBob's house after Patrick's, Squidward's house is absent from the scene.
