Synopsis
In the beginning of the episode, Squidward is working at the Krusty Krab, and SpongeBob accidentally karate chops him. Squidward asks what he is doing, and SpongeBob tells him that he is planning to do karate with Sandy, which Squidward thinks is stupid. That night, Squidward is grocery shopping and is approached by a large thug (The Creepy Creeper). Squidward assumes he is going to steal his groceries, so he runs to SpongeBob and asks to be taught karate. However, because SpongeBob is not very good at it himself, he is unable to teach Squidward.
They then go to Sandy for help. First, she makes Squidward promise not to use it for revenge and use it only for protection. Then, she and SpongeBob try to teach him, but cannot. When Squidward says that he had vengeance during training, Sandy then decides to quit on him, but Squidward says he would do anything, so Sandy makes him do all the work around the treedome, saying that it will teach him the basic movements. Finally, Squidward decides to quit. However, he accidentally flings acorns at himself that he is able to dodge. He then finds out that in doing all the work, he actually did learn karate.
So then, Sandy presents him his belt to show that he knows karate, but Squidward claims that he has "important business" to attend. He then finds the thug and uses karate to beat him up to get revenge, using a lot of moves related to the housework he did around the treedome.
However, it turns out that he never wanted to steal his groceries; he wanted to return them. SpongeBob and Sandy then come to give Squidward his belt only to find out that he used karate for vengeance. Sandy says that Squidward does not deserve his belt, and SpongeBob scolds Squidward for not taking Sandy's advice. Then they walk away because Squidward dishonored their trust in him. However, Squidward has no shame of what he did and still considers himself as a karate master. An officer shows up to arrest Squidward for assaulting the thug, as the episode ends.

Trivia
General
- This episode was originally called "Squid's Defense."[3][6]
- This episode is the 350th episode segment of the series in packaging order.
- The title card for this episode is similar to that of "Karate Star," except in widescreen.
- Also, both episodes involve a character learning karate. In that episode, Patrick was the one learning karate.
- In addition, the center of the title card is nearly the same as the title card for "The Splinter."
- A future episode, Single-Celled Defense, has a similar plot on Sandy teaching karate for self defense. In that episode, she teaches Plankton how to.
- On Hulu, the SpongeBob promo is the scene from this episode where SpongeBob and Gary are laughing on the couch, except without sound and it is horizontally flipped.
- This episode uses a karate chop transition rather than the regular bubble transitions.
- This is the only episode of the franchise to date to premiere on New Year's Day in the United States.
- As such, this episode holds the record for the earliest into a calendar year for an episode to premiere.
- In the episode, SpongeBob mentions he's been practicing karate for two years.
- Squidward is the fourth main character to be seen doing karate, after Sandy, SpongeBob, and Patrick.
- However, he does not wear karate gear when he does karate, unlike the other three.
- This is the second episode where a character other than SpongeBob or Sandy learns karate. The first was "Karate Star."
- This was Blake Lemons' first episode as a writer/storyboard director.
- This is the third appearance of the Slug Buddy punching bag. The first was "The Great Snail Race," and the second was "The Way of the Sponge."
- Frames from this episode was later used in "Friendiversary" when SpongeBob remembers Squidward.
- This is the third episode in which Squidward gets arrested at the end. The first is "Good Ol' Whatshisname" for stealing a wallet, and the second is "Professor Squidward" for identity theft.
Cultural references
- This episode's title is a pun on "self-defense."
- The way Squidward did the chores is similar to a scene in the 1984 film The Karate Kid, in which Daniel was tricked by Mr. Miyagi into doing chores around his house.
- The one rule of karate was it has to be used defensively, and not for revenge. Timmy also followed this rule in the episode "Kung Timmy" in another Nickelodeon show - The Fairly OddParents!.
Errors
- The Krusty Krab toilets are in the wrong place, as they appear on the left side of the restroom area instead of the back.
- When Squidward first bangs on SpongeBob's door and the scene changes over to SpongeBob and Gary, they are sitting on the couch. After SpongeBob lets Squidward into his house and is spooked by Gary, the couch is missing and Gary was suddenly on the floor.
- When Squidward says, "Oh... whatever. Hiyah...", Sandy's teeth is tanned instead of white.
- When Squidward is watering Sandy's lawn while she is holding an umbrella, her tail disappears.
- After Squidward vacuums Sandy's house, the bag on the vacuum cleaner disappears.
- Squidward seems to have two tentacles when Sandy pokes him in the stomach.
- Before Squidward breaks the board, SpongeBob does not have a helmet, but when Squidward hits him with his tentacles right into the dome, he suddenly has a helmet.
- Gale's T-shirt in this episode is dark pink, instead of the usual light pink.
- When the camera zooms in on Squidward next to the punching bag, SpongeBob is no longer in the frame, even though he was next to the punching bag in the previous scene.
