Synopsis
Mr. Krabs gives SpongeBob a new Krusty Krab employee hat as reward for his years of outstanding service, but Mr. Krabs tells him he is not allowed to take it home with him. However, SpongeBob sneaks the hat out the back door since Mr. Krabs never said he couldn't take it through there, and proceeds to show the hat around town. When a woman gets in a cab to escape, it causes the hat to blow out of SpongeBob's hand and fall toward a bottomless pit, where Patrick catches it, only to throw it down upon misunderstanding SpongeBob's words to him. The two jump down the pit and fall for hours until they end up in a mysterious lost civilization of deep-sea dwellers, and SpongeBob finds his hat amongst a bunch of other junk that has also fallen down. They take the hat and use it as a balloon to escape, but once they get to the top of the pit, SpongeBob sees Mr. Krabs and panics as he can't let him see him with his hat, and asks Patrick to help him lay low.
Sure enough, the two are pulled back down the pit by one of the creatures, who accuse them of robbing from their "sacred shrine and lives." When the leader refuses to let them have the hat as he was planning to use it as a cover for one of his golf clubs, SpongeBob offers them Patrick's "lucky" yo-yo as a trade. But the yo-yo breaks when SpongeBob tries to use it, so instead SpongeBob offers the leader his underpants to use as a new crown, and they are released and returned to the surface. But when they end up going too high and need to go down, Patrick mistakes SpongeBob's warning once again and pops the hat, destroying it.
Knowing he can at least sew it back together, SpongeBob borrows Patrick's sewing needle and spends a whole night of hat reconstruction until it is in perfect condition. He goes to work where Mr. Krabs sees him already wearing the hat and suspects he got a spot on it, but thankfully, it was just a shadow. SpongeBob sighs in relief, but he accidentally knocks the hat off his head when wiping it, causing it to fall onto the grill and burn to a crisp, destroying it completely. SpongeBob tearfully apologizes, but Mr. Krabs stops him and reveals he has a locker full of emergency hats which are coming out of his next few paychecks, and SpongeBob faints.
Trivia
- In the comic, Mr. Krabs says the Krusty Krab employee hat is not allowed to be outside the Krusty Krab; however, both SpongeBob and Squidward are shown wearing their hats outside the Krusty Krab in several episodes.
