SpongeBob wakes up, stubs his toe, and starts crying. He rips his favorite shirt and starts crying again. He goes downstairs and hears a sad song on the radio, he cries again. At work, he flips a Krabby Patty, which lands on the ground when, SpongeBob unitl over again golden patties. Mr. Krabs startles him. SpongeBob then cries once again. Squidward gets irritated of SpongeBob's crying and he yells at him. SpongeBob then cries. Squidward tells SpongeBob that he cries too much, SpongeBob denies it. Squidward then pulls up a TV and plays a video of a trillion tears and millions of places where SpongeBob has cried over those years. He then makes a bet with SpongeBob that he couldn't last until midnight without crying. The bet is if Spongebob cries befor midnight he has to wash Squidward's bike, clean his rain guters, and all of his yard work for a year. If Spongebob wins Squidward must attend a sleepover with Spongebob. Squidward does not like Spongebob's choise but realises Spongebob could not hold his tears in that long. After the bet is made, Squidward walks home with SpongeBob home to make sure he cries, and tries to make SpongeBob cry over a beautiful sunset. Squidward then visits Spongebob for the night and still attempts to make him cry using things like sad news stories, sad news stories with funerals , a sad song on the clarinet, and a sad bedtime story. Amazingly, SpongeBob manages to hold in his tears until midnight, despite all of Squidward's best attempts, and after midnight, SpongeBob cries all over Bikini Bottom like crazy. Squidward comes over for a slumber party the next night, and the episode ends with Squidward crying and screaming and SpongeBob comforting him.

Trivia

  • The title card is identical to Pickles, but it's a bit zoomed-in more.
  • The rules of the no crying contest are, if Squidward wins and SpongeBob cries and screams, SpongeBob has to wash his bike, clean out his rain gutters, and do all of Squidward's tiresome yard work for one year. If SpongeBob doesn't cry, and Squidward loses, he has to attend a sleepover at SpongeBob's house (much to his disgust).
  • Squidward's line "I just threw up in my mouth a little," is a reference to the movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
  • On the radio, if you listen carefully, the announcer said the song was by Eely Dan. This is a obvious reference to the jazz rock band Steely Dan. Also the next song was by Lionel Fishy. This is also a reference to Lionel Richie.
    • The radio announcer also states that the songs name before "Sad Songs" was Aja , a song by Steely Dan on the album of the same name.
  • During the slideshow Squidward made of Spongebob's breakdowns over the years, Spongebob wore his Krusty Krab hat in all of the clips even though most weren't set at The Krusty Krab.

  • The Bikini Bottom Men's Choir made another appearance in this episode.
  • On the Triton's Revenge DVD, this episode is on the DVD and it includes a deleted scene. It shows, after SpongeBob is "yelled at" by Squidward, Squidward tells SpongeBob "You know there's an old saying, SpongeBob". SpongeBob asks, "What is it?" Squidward answers, "Don't cry over a soiled Krabby Patty!, and now may I give you a little word of advice... SHUT UP!!!" SpongeBob starts crying more. Then, it cuts to the chalkboard scene.
  • When Squidward yells, "Krabby Patty nothing!" his left eye malfunctions slighty
  • When Squidward is making SpongeBob watch TV, it shows a show with a father and his son. The house shown looks like SpongeBob's Grandma's house. Oddly, SpongeBob doesn't even notice.
  • It's the 4th episode to have a deleted scene. The 3rd was The Sponge Who Could Fly, the 2nd was Just One Bite and the 1st was Procrastination.
  • On August 9, You Don't Know Sponge aired with the same title card music.
  • In all other episodes SpongeBob is yelled at for laughing too much.
  • This episode shows Gary sleeping downstairs; he always sleeps upstairs.
  • This is the second time Squidward's lying on SpongeBob's bed. The first time is in Can You Spare A Dime?.
  • This episode is similar to Funny Pants. The reason why is SpongeBob is also told to stop the progress of an emotional action in that episode. Also his floods of tears are much bigger in this episode than before.. And it floods all around Bikini Bottom in Patrick's House, The Krusty Krab, and in the streets.
  • The time when the sun sets is similar to the air dates.
  • When SpongeBob threw out the TV, it was larger than an average-sized window.
  • When SpongeBob says "Time for bed" the clock reads 9:00 but when he goes to bed, it's close to midnight.
  • Sandy and Mrs. Puff did not appear in this episode.
  • When Squidward shows SpongeBob the video montage on him crying, the tape is popped out. However, Squidward is still able to play the tape
  • When SpongeBob nearly cried over the snail almost not getting down from the tree, he blinked and a few tears shot out of his eye. This means that Squidward should have won the bet. However If you look closely Squidward's eyes looked away from SpongeBob the moment the tears came out, meaning he may not have seen it.
