Synopsis

SpongeBob has a dream where he has to save someone from being tied up on railroad tracks until he sees a fish named Jack M. Crazyfish. It was a nightmare and SpongeBob loses the battle. His dreams disturb Gary's sleep all night. When SpongeBob goes to his bathroom to brush his teeth, he cannot open his toothpaste, so he uses a wrench to open it. But he accidentally gets the wrench stuck in his eye lid, he gets a hideous black eye from the accident. Whenever people notice SpongeBob's black eye (For example, Sandy and Patrick), he tells them that he was fighting Jack M. Crazyfish (Who he thought was actually fake), and he got the black eye from doing that. Later, when Jack M. Crazyfish arrives at the Krusty Krab and says he is looking for SpongeBob, the customers tell Crazyfish the story SpongeBob said. SpongeBob was very afraid and wanted to tell him the truth, so he went back home and gets the wrench and the toothpaste. SpongeBob demonstrates it to Jack M. Crazyfish what really happened to him. SpongeBob then got a second black eye. Jack M. Crazyfish tells him that he just came to the Krusty Krab because he has heard that SpongeBob makes great Krabby Patties, and he is hungry for one. SpongeBob then served him delicious Krabby Patties but because he had two black eyes he could not see very well. The patties then went flying to Jack M. Crazyfish. Jack M. Crazyfish gets mad and challenges SpongeBob to a game of rock, paper, and scissors. SpongeBob won the first time but he did not know that Jack M. Crazyfish cheated on him. Template:Section-cleanup

SpongeBob tells Sandy he got the black eye in a fight with Jack M. Crazyfish (the summary before the story). Then he told the story, but he said that he got the black eye by "miscalculating the trajectory of the cup, and the straw jabbing him in the eye" and not from the fight with Crazyfish.
Manatees make their only appearance in this episode. They act like cattle.
The music when SpongeBob tries to open the toothpaste is not the usual Hawaiian guitar, but has a harpsichord, and a bassoon.
This is the first time Jack M. Crazyfish has appeared in an episode. The second was "20,000 Patties Under the Sea," only to make a cameo appearance with a different voice, and similar personality.
In SpongeBob's bathroom, when he turns muscular and tries to open the toothpaste, the bubbles by his hand stop moving for a moment.
In Welsh, the episode is called "Llygad Ddu" which means "Black eye" in English.
While SpongeBob was getting his wrench to pry open his toothpaste, his feet squeaked, despite that he was not wearing his shoes.
In SpongeBob's bathroom, when it shows the toothpaste cap bouncing off everything, one of the things it bounces off of is the wringer, later seen in "Stuck in the Wringer."
This is the third time SpongeBob is shown with a black eye. The first two were "No Weenies Allowed" and "Krabby Land." He will once again have a black eye in "Stuck in the Wringer."
Jack M. Crazyfish has the same voice as Professor Calamitous on The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.
It is strange how nobody realized he was lying especially because of the major discontinuity between his stories, you would think at least two people would figure it out, then again maybe none of the characters were anywhere near each other even off screen.
One of SpongeBob's Jack M. Crazyfish stories is strikingly similar to an archetypical western (the one where the lady fish is tied to railroad tracks).
This was Greg Miller's only episode as writer and storyboard director.
Technically, in a way, there is a such thing as a pain gland. They're called nerves.
SpongeBob's story changes with each retelling.
Mr. Krabs's skin turned lighter like in "Help Wanted" when he said he is right.
During the telling of his story in the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob said, "I emerged from my fruit-shaped bungalow fresh as a bee" but we have seen from numerous episodes that his house has more than one floor so it cannot be considered a bungalow.
This is the third time SpongeBob is shown as muscular, although in "MuscleBob BuffPants," the muscles are inflatable. The second time was in "The Fry Cook Games."
In real life, a black eye due to eye injury would have "black" around the eye, not on the eyelids.
- Although, they might have done it like this since a circle around the eye might have been hard to see in some cases.
60 feet would be about 4-6 stories high, or the length of a bowling lane.
All of the main characters appear in this episode except Plankton.

Cultural references

SpongeBob uses Krust toothpaste, obviously a parody of Crest toothpaste.

Errors

When SpongeBob spilled mustard on Jack M. Crazyfish's shirt, the mustard was still there. After they were playing rock-paper-scissors, the mustard is gone.
When the screen shows a close up of the clam, it says KRYSTY KRAB and not KRUSTY KRAB. This error was also used in "Grandpappy the Pirate."
When SpongeBob tells his story to Sandy, in the prologue, SpongeBob doesn't wear a hat. But, when Jack M. Crazyfish is crying when his wig is falling, SpongeBob is wearing a Krusty Krab hat, but there is no anchor in that hat. When SpongeBob drinks the tears, he doesn't wear a hat.
