Synopsis
In the beginning of the episode, SpongeBob, exhausted, walks home from the concert from the prior episode that he performed, into his bed, with Gary. He falls asleep and starts dreaming about making Krabby Patties in an automated Krabby Patty production line. The Patties come out dancing in unison, and dressed for landing, because all of this is in an airplane. One of the Krabby Patties refuses to fall and kicks SpongeBob out of the airplane. SpongeBob tries to regain control of the plane.
The plane flies out of the dream cloud and runs over Larry and Mr. Krabs' dream cloud, waking them up. The Krabby Patty and Dream SpongeBob fall out of the plane, which destroys the Chum Bucket. Then, they land inside Patrick's dream cloud.
Inside the dream, SpongeBob and Patrick chase the Patty, falling into a giant Patrick's stomach where there is a party. The two chase the Patty, hiding in ice cream cones on giant Patrick's body. They climb a cone out of the dream, and fall into Squidward's dream.
Here, they walk through a gallery at a museum. Squidward's art comes to life and chases the two into Squidward's room, where he uses the two as brushes as punishment. Meanwhile, the Krabby Patty is being chased by a knight, and ultimately ends up in Squidward's mouth, choking him.
Squidward wakes up, only to find SpongeBob and Patrick in his room, as the episode ends.
Production
According to Benjamin Arcand, this episode was not a normal storyboard duty. He storyboarded the episode from an outline by Andrew Goodman. He picked the music for the episode with Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller and timed it to the animatic.[1]
On April 26, 2019, Arcand shared a storyboard from the episode.[2]
On May 9, 2019, Arcand posted a drawing of Patrick in his outfit from the episode, lying down with a glass of martini in his hand. He said he had "just delivered something that required a lot, A LOT of brain juice!" Considering the context of this drawing, he was likely delivering his rough storyboard for the episode.[3]
The episode was confirmed by Vincent Waller on February 15, 2020.[4]

Trivia
General
- Benjamin Arcand storyboarded this episode from an outline, making the episode storyboard-driven, and technically meaning that he wrote the episode, although this episode has little to no dialogue.[1]
- According to Dave Cunningham, this episode is officially classified as a short.[5]
- This is the last episode Tom Yasumi worked on as an animation director, ending his 21 years long streak with the series. He left the series after the production of season 12 to work at Bento Box Entertainment[7] and on the Animaniacs reboot. This left Alan Smart and Andrew Overtoom as the only two veterans as the animation directors on the series.
- This is the final episode where the colors are more vibrant and neon-like, the first episode is "Lost in Bikini Bottom".
- This is the third season finale episode in a row to be six minutes long while paired up with a 16-minute episode. The first is "Don't Wake Patrick," and the second is "The String."
- This is the seventh episode to be six minutes long due to the fact that its sister was 16 minutes long. The first four to do so that were not part of season 12 were "Gary Takes a Bath," "The Bad Guy Club for Villains," "Don't Wake Patrick," and "The String."
- This episode and "Krusty Koncessionaires" tie into each other,[8] as this episode takes place directly after the last episode starting with SpongeBob coming home from the concert while still having the Krabby Patty vacuum on his back. Additionally, this episode ends in a dream with Squidward playing Claire St. Clare's clarinet which he was previously shown playing at the end of "Krusty Koncessionaires."
- This is the second pair of episodes to be tied into each other. The first was "Swamp Mates" and "One Trick Sponge."
- Among many flashing images on the TV in SpongeBob's dream, an image of SpongeBoy is visible for a split-second.
- The episode's plot is similar to "Sleepy Time," as both involve SpongeBob exploring other people's dreams.
- Some of Squidward's self-portraits—including Bold and Brash and the one styled like the Squidward sculpture from "Are You Happy Now?," "Stuck on the Roof," and "The Night Patty"—are seen alive in his dream.
- Before its premiere date in the United States, a clip of this episode was used during the "Nick Is With You" promo on March 21, 2020.[9]
- Another clip of this episode was used in "Top 5 Funniest Moments from New Episodes" video on official Nick Russia and Asia Facebook account on November 24, 2020, after premiering in the United States.[10][11]
- There was a cut scene from the rough storyboards where the short ended with Rodger Bumpass waking up from a nightmare and seeing Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke sleeping in his bed, subsequently screaming.[12]
- This is the first time the track "Overture in Sea" was used in a title card since "Squidward's School for Grown-Ups."
- In this episode, Mr. Krabs is shown sleeping on a bunch of money and in his underwear, however in some episodes such as "Squeaky Boots," he is shown sleeping on a hammock and in pajamas.
- Nickelodeon classifies this episode as the first since "Reef Blower" not to have dialogue, although SpongeBob and Gary have a few speaking lines at the beginning.[13] Likewise, other characters like Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and Squidward have non-verbal lines throughout. They just make panting, snoring, and screaming sounds.
- This episode is Jennie Monica's last episode as being credited as a producer, with her being credited as a co-executive producer in "A Place for Pets."
- As of 2024, this is the most recent episode to premiere on a weekend.
- This and "Krusty Koncessionaires" are the last episodes to say, "Viacom International" in the copyright information in the closing credits.
- On the May 28, 2021 airing, this episode was paired up with "My Leg!"[14]
- With the production code of 325-1257, this is the final season 12 episode to begin production.
- While Nicolas Carr is credited as the music editor for this episode, Benjamin Arcand had actually edited the music for the storyboards/animation to be in rhythm with most of the scenes.
- Nicolas Carr did, however, clean up the editing to make it slightly more realistic and chose the first two music tracks.
- The rest were edited by Benjamin Arcand, with both Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller picking each track that played.
