Synopsis

Patrick's face is off-model.

Cecil is presenting a breakfast of burnt pancakes, burnt toast, burnt orange juice to his family. Patrick comes in and everyone is shock by his appearance: his face how has smaller, circular eyes and thicker eyebrows. When he goes to do the show, the audience is horrified and all of his sponsors quit. Squidina tries to get Patrick's face back on-model.

Patrick and Squidina first visit Granny Tentacles' house. Granny Tentacles remodels Patrick's face, but just makes him look the same as her. Next, they visit Cecil, who is fixing the family boat in the garage. Cecil has never fixed a face, so Patrick suggests he imagine his face as something he has fixed, resulting in Patrick's head turning into a boat. Cecil smashes it with a bottle and Patrick's face is still off-model.

The Easter Bunny gives Patrick an egg.

Patrick says that it will take a miracle to get his face back to normal: "the strongest miracle of all, a Christmas miracle." Squidina reminds him that today is Easter, so Patrick watches the Easter Bunny tracker on TV. He learns that the Easter Bunny is being held captive by Dr. Plankenstein, who wants to cut him open to figure out how he lays technicolor eggs. Patrick comes in and saves the Easter Bunny, who gives him an egg that hatches into a monstrous bunny, who attacks Patrick and turns his face into a porcelain doll. Patrick begs the Easter Bunny for help, and tries to cut off his foot for luck. The Easter Bunny gives him a chocolate foot, which Patrick eats and finds a fortune inside: "To find your missing face, travel forward through time and space." Patrick and Squidina head to the time closet, while the Easter Bunny fires eggs from his butt at Plankenstein and his crew, who run away.

Unsure of how far to go into the future, Patrick decides to head to season 5. He then sees the world in a CalArts style, and realizes the show has been moved to another network. They go further into the future, but find increasingly bizarre Patricks, until the time closet no longer functions, and Squidina reveals that they traveled to a Dalíesque incarnation of the end of time. There, they find on-model Patrick, who reveals that he traded places with off-model Patrick to eat Cecil's burnt breakfasts. Off-model Patrick reunites with his similarly off-model family, as the on-model Patrick heads back to his own time with Squidina.

They return to find that Cecil and Bunny had gotten facial reconstruction surgery to make Patrick feel less bad about his (at the time) own off-model appearance. Patrick says it was the best Easter ever, and the Easter Bunny shows up as the family wishes the viewers a happy Easter.

Trivia

General

File:FaceOff-Model.jpeg
  • On July 8, 2023, storyboard artist Arielle Phillips posted a drawing of Patrick with a joke similar to the plot of this episode, both featuring the star in an "off-model" state.[12]
  • The backgrounds of Cecil's garage are recycled from "The Patterfly Effect."
  • When SpongeMonster, Pat-gor, and Dr. Plankenstein are smashed against the door, they use their 2D flattened models from "The Starry Awards."
  • The premiere for this episode had higher ratings on Nicktoons than it did on Nickelodeon, with the Nick premiere receiving 74,000 viewers,[13] and the Nicktoons premiere received 103,000 viewers.[14] The same would happen with its sister episode.
  • In the UK and Ireland, two scenes were edited. Firstly, the scene where Patrick's off-model face is first shown is changed so the screen does not flash. Secondly, during the scene at Dr. Plankenstein's castle, the line "Silence, you cotton-tailed freak!" is removed, and the line "You're not going anywhere until we cut you open and figure out how you lay those technicolor eggs" is shortened to "You're not going anywhere until we figure out how you lay those technicolor eggs."[15]

Cultural references

  • This episode's title is a parody of the 1997 movie Face/Off.
  • When Squidina and Patrick use the time closet to travel to the show's 5th season, they reach a world with all the characters in a style that generally parodies the styles of Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Clarence, and Baby Shark's Big Show![16]
    • This style is often referred to as the "Cal-Arts style," a term which was coined by John Kricfalusi that would eventually be used to refer to an animation style in which the characters are drawn with a bean-shaped head.
    • Patrick also mentions that the show has changed networks, referring to Cartoon Network.
    • Patrick's design in the fifth season is reminiscent of how he looked in the SpongeBob: Reimagined short remaking "Idiot Box" in the Steven Universe style.
  • One of the Patricks seen during the time travel montage is drawn in the style of cartoonist Basil Wolverton, specifically his cover art on the satirical magazine Mad.

Episode references

  • One of the Patricks that briefly flashes during the montage has a stop-motion Patrick's head in his knight suit from "The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom."
