History

Development for SpongeBob Simulator

On February 2023, it was announced that Gamefam officially partnered with Paramount Global and Nickelodeon and made official Roblox experiences for the popular Nickelodeon franchises SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles[1] as the names for the experiences are TMNT: Battle Tycoon and SpongeBob Simulator. On September 9, 2023, SpongeBob Simulator was released in beta for 99 Robux and is officially released on February 2, 2024.

Employee mistreatment accusation

On December 11, 2022, a former employee of Gamefam Studios, Digital Purgatory, came out on Twitter with allegations against the company.[2] They accused Gamefam of making a monopoly on the Roblox platform, underpaying and overworking their employees, poor communication, and cutting hours without notice. They also stated they were let go from the company without an immediate notice. Evidence was then provided that Gamefam broke their contract with Purgatory. The contract required the studio to give them a 10 day notice of their termination. Purgatory was notified 3 days after they were terminated. Industry data shows Purgatory's reported salary, $30,000 a year, was the lower end of what the average Roblox dev earns.

Another former Gamefam Studios employee came out to say they were also not fairly compensated, was overworked, received bad communication from the CEO, and was coerced into working a week without a contract. A Twitter user who applied to Gamefam stated they were offered "40-50 percent" less than what they expected for a software engineer position.

The statement did not stop Twitter users from campaigning against the company. After the statement was tweeted, another former employee came out to say Gamefam was lying. They stated they were laid off without warning; failing to provide a two week notice. Twitter users also provided evidence Gamefam Studios were banning users on their Discord server who spoke about the studio's layoffs and allegations.

In April 2023, Gamefam settled with a programmer after a complaint had been filed with the National Labor Relations Board alleging that the company had violated the National Labor Relations Act by threatening retaliation against employees who spoke with coworkers about their salaries.
