HBO Max
HBO Max, formerly known as Max,[1] is an American streaming service owned by Warner Bros Discovery. It offers movies and shows from the Warner Bros library, including the release of SpongeBob SquarePants in other territories internationally.
After the merger with WarnerMedia and AT&T in 2018, they launched a new streaming service called "HBO Max"[2] which would release in May 2020,[3] with their streaming library of Warner Bros and DC properties, the streaming rights for the Comedy Central seasons of South Park[4], and the release of movies and shows that were previously added from HBO NOW.[5] On May 23, 2023, HBO Max rebranded into "MAX" due to the merger with Discovery Inc.[6] On July 9, 2025, the service changed its name back to "HBO Max" because it holds the "HBO" brand to its content and audience.[7]
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie was released in the United States on the service's launch day May 27, 2020 along with other Nickelodeon movies as part of a deal with Paramount and HBO,[4] until it was removed on August 31.[8] The film would later return to the U.S. version of the service on April 1, 2024. In 2022, the series was released exclusively on the service in Portugal and Central & Eastern Europe, but only seasons 8–10; it was later removed from the service there. On December 14, 2024, the series was released exclusively in Latin America, but only seasons 1–5.[9]
