Slicker Sam

From SpongeBob Wiki
Character

Slicker Sam is a character who appears in the comic strip The Treasure of Captain Goldfish.

Description

A tall and purple fish, Sam resembles the stereotypical portrayal of a fisherman. He is shown to wear a yellow raincoat and hat, with matching yellow waders and a pair of black rubber boots. Additionally, he has a fishhook piercing his bottom lip. In the present he has a short, shaggy gray beard. In the flashbacks to the days when he and Mr. Krabs' were shipmates, Sam was shown to have been a blond in his youth based on the color of his beard.

Role in comic

Described as "the best pal [he] ever had," Slicker Sam was a fellow pirate on Captain Goldfish's crew along with Mr. Krabs. Sam is the main antagonist of the story. He arrives as Mr. Krabs plots a course for Captain Goldfish's treasure a few pages into the story with the intent of searching for the treasure with the Krusty Krew. After Mr. Krabs kicks him out of the Krusty Krab, it's then explained that the two had a falling out because he went on a rampage and destroyed most of their ship after consuming a portion of gold. It turns out that his appetite for gold is more literal than the greed exhibited by Mr. Krabs and Captain Goldfish, and he transforms into a hulking monster when exposed to gold.

Not long after the Krusty Krew sets sail for Captain Goldfish's treasure, SpongeBob discovers that Sam had stowed away on their ship. Exploiting his naivety, Sam manipulates SpongeBob into keeping his presence a secret from Mr. Krabs and lies about his motivations. Slicker Sam wants the treasure to himself, but needs Mr. Krabs out of the way. So claiming that he will assist SpongeBob in sailing the ship, Sam actually plans on manipulating him into sinking the ship or offing Mr. Krabs. As the ship finally reaches its destination, Sam is exposed to gold and transforms into his beast-like state and exposes his presence to Mr. Krabs himself.

Sam steals Mr. Krabs' map and goes on the island, only to find an empty hole where the treasure is supposed to be. Captain Goldfish then calls out to him, Mr. Krabs, and SpongeBob, telling them that he got the treasure. After Captain Goldfish sails away on their ship, the trio are seen sailing on a raft. SpongeBob gives both Mr. Krabs and Sam friendship medals, which Sam instantly eats once SpongeBob tells him they are made of gold.
