"Goodbye, Krabby Patty?" (#24)
I have fond memories of watching the premiere of this episode. The concept of Krabby Patties being manufactured and sold in grocery stores really hadn’t been done before. It had a lot of parallels to reality and a lot of great references. Patrick was taken advantage of for the marketing scheme and his bond with SpongeBob is what saved the day. The fact that the Frozen Krabby Patties were made with sand was quite interesting as well."Krusty Katering" (#23)
Another quite unique episode as we don’t usually see the Krusty Krab cater anything. They started off with a kid’s birthday party, which didn’t turn out too well for the Krusty Krew. They were then asked if they were high-class caterers, and Mr. Krabs lied, so they had to change things up to make it seem so. What followed was a fun sequence where the crew tried to manage things. In the end things went downhill and resulted in a food fight. There were a lot of funny moments in this episode which earned it a spot on this list."Goons on the Moon" (#22)
The episode starts off as Sandy’s Science Scouts are getting ready to go on a trip to the moon. I found it quite funny that all the scouts brought items that wouldn’t really help them in space. Squidward delivering a Krabby Patty and being stuck in the Treedome rocket set off some enjoyable moments as well. After some time doing tasks, it was discovered that Santa was sleeping on the dark side of the moon. Even though this isn’t as much of a Christmas special as Christmas Who? and It’s a SpongeBob Christmas!,” it’s still a great one to watch around the holidays. SpongeBob destroying the moon and having to be a temporary moon until Santa could bring a new one for Christmas ended this enjoyable episode for me."Scaredy Pants" (#21)
What happens in this episode is what you come to expect on Halloween, and more. SpongeBob became spooked at every little thing. Squidward scares him with a Flying Dutchman costume, which sends him running home. He even got the nickname “SpongeBob ScaredyPants.” I thought it was funny that SpongeBob put a sheet on himself and called it a ghost costume, only to be called a haunted mattress. He then had his head shaved by Patrick so he would look more like a ghost. I really had a good laugh at SpongeBob and Patrick’s failed attempts at scaring Bikini Bottomites. The biggest one came when Patrick lowered SpongeBob by a rope at the Krusty Krab, pretending to be The Flying Dutchman. It actually initially scared everyone, but they quickly realized that it was just SpongeBob. The real Flying Dutchman then came and took the sheet off of him, revealing that he had his head shaved down to his brain. I was amazed that even the Flying Dutchman was frightened by that."Pineapple RV" (#20)
This episode is special for many different reasons. For one, this was the last SpongeBob SquarePants episode to be fully completed in Stephen Hillenburg’s lifetime. It is also great to hear that he really enjoyed the episode. Additionally, the season 1 episode “Pizza Delivery” was originally supposed to be what the premise of this episode is, but was scrapped and turned into the classic episode we know today. It is amazing that the concept for this episode was developed many years ago. I thought it quite enjoyable and unique that SpongeBob’s pineapple was turned into an RV to go on a road trip. I found it quite interesting that they had Gary drive, but it’s not the first time that’s happened and Gary has also done other things that sea snails normally couldn’t do. I liked how at the end of the episode SpongeBob and Patrick are able to befriend sea bears, albeit while Squidward still can’t get along with them."Wet Painters" (#19)
I find this to be such a fun episode. Mr. Krabs has SpongeBob and Patrick paint the inside of his house. The issue with that was he has a lot of nicknacks on his walls, making it difficult to not get paint on anything. The lengths they went to to try and not get paint on anything was hilarious. What followed was many laughable attempts to try and get the paint off of Mr. Krabs’ first dollar. My favorite was when they tried to bang a computer on the dollar. What resulted was the dollar being entirely covered by paint. I like the twist at the end where Mr. Krabs reveals that he was just messing with them and the paint easily comes off."SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" (#18)
I really enjoy this fun adventure of an episode. It started off with the Krusty Krab setting up shop at Goo Lagoon in an attempt to attract customers. They are on a surfboard in the ocean until Patrick tries to get on it and tips it over. Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Sandy are sent off into separate places. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward must learn how to surf in order to get home. I enjoyed the unconventional ways they had to do so. I was also amazed how quickly Sandy was able to build a 5-star hotel, a helicopter, a steam-powered generator, a cappuccino shop, a coconut-milk-powered car, and a control tower. This is yet another episode where her genius shines. The only way to get off of the island was to surf on the wave called “the Big One.” This was a compelling challenge that set the stage for their return home. A sacrifice was also required, which turned out to be Jack Kahuna Laguna, the surfing trainer. In the end, everyone makes it back home, capping off this enjoyable episode."Atlantis SquarePantis" (#17)
I know this may be an unpopular opinion but I really enjoy this episode. I always like any time where SpongeBob and the gang go on an adventure together. SpongeBob and Patrick discover the missing piece of an artifact that can lead to an ancient land called Atlantis. There is so much for everyone to explore there. And of course things were messed up by the antics of SpongeBob and Patrick. They popped the world’s oldest bubble after they popped the decoy of it. This sent the Atlantean guards into a frenzy and drove the gang out of their land. They also took the Atlantean Amulet and trashed it so they could never return. And I can’t say I blame them after the bubble being popped. All in all, I really enjoyed the adventure that took place in this episode."Shanghaied" (#16)
Another classic episode of SpongeBob SquarePants that I really enjoy. There is also a unique part of this episode where there were three different endings that could happen, which are only viewable in a limited number of ways. The episode starts with an anchor falling from the sky, with SpongeBob and Patrick thinking the sky had a baby. Them along with Squidward climb up the anchor, which turned out to be coming from the Flying Dutchman’s ship. SpongeBob and Patrick keep trying to escape, but keep falling back on the ship. The Flying Dutchman then forces them all to work for him for eternity. It was pretty funny how Patrick was driving the ship right though the rocks, and just like Scaredy Pants, made poor attempts at scaring people. This also birthed the classic line from Patrick: “Leedle leedle lee!” I found it interesting that the Flying Dutchman isn’t able to eat without his dining sock, which SpongeBob and Patrick proceed to steal. When the Dutchman finally catches up to them, he gives them three wishes. This is my favorite part of the episode as things could have gone real differently, as shown by the alternative endings. SpongeBob and Patrick randomly say things which end up using two wishes. The third wish was making the Flying Dutchman a vegetarian. This is a classic example of the lesson “be careful what you wish for.” The plan ends up backfiring on them as they turn into fruits and vegetables. This is such a legendary episode that stands the test of time."Chocolate with Nuts" (#15)
One of the most memorable moments in all of SpongeBob SquarePants spawned from this episode. SpongeBob and Patrick see an ad in one of Squidward’s magazines, and think they can achieve a fancy lifestyle from it. They initially had many failed attempts, with one being when they tried to sell some to Incidental 6, who in turn shouted “CHOCOLATE!,” which is the memorable moment I mentioned above. I enjoyed all of the times they were conned and some of their own questionable sales techniques. What really gained them profits was the twist at the end, which was awesome. Incidental 6 caught up to them and it turns out he wanted to buy all of their chocolate, hence “CHOCOLATE!” They spent all of the money made to rent out a fancy restaurant to themselves with Mary and her mother, whom they sold chocolate to earlier. This capped off an amazing episode."Frankendoodle" (#14)
This episode presents such a fun and unique concept. A magic pencil falls from the sky which SpongeBob and Patrick discover. I was and still am amazed that anything can be created or destroyed by a pencil. There was even a subpar attempt at drawing Squidward. What really set things off was when DoodleBob, a version of SpongeBob, was drawn. I liked the twist that one of his arms was left unerased, which he used to redraw the rest of his body. What followed was a thrilling battle between him and SpongeBob, which eventually ended when DoodleBob stepped on a piece of paper. The pencil is sent back to the artist who dropped it in the water, who ends up breaking it. This is all around a classic episode, and has spawned major phenomena over the years."Roller Cowards" (#13)
I have always been a fan of amusement parks and for the longest time was afraid of riding roller coasters, and this episode relates to my personal experiences. Albeit dramaticized, I felt a similar fear to SpongeBob and Patrick when I rode my first roller coaster. I like how SpongeBob and Patrick start off riding a kiddie roller coaster, which is essentially all I did for years. I enjoyed how they would make any excuse possible to avoid getting on the Fiery Fist O’ Pain. Once they finally decide to get on the ride, it breaks down and they feel relieved that they don’t have to ride it. This is probably how I would have felt. The ride gets fixed and they actually have to ride it. At the end of the ride they realize that there was nothing to fear and they actually enjoyed it. While I would never get on a ride like the Fiery Fist O’ Pain, after riding my first roller coaster I realized that there was nothing to fear and I could enjoy many other amusement park rides as well. This episode taught me a lesson on overcoming fears and is memorable as well."Squid Noir" (#12)
This is a quite fun and unique episode. Especially considering the leadup to it with the You Bring the Color event, in which you could submit your own coloring of scenes from the show. Some winning submissions made it into the end of the episode. I made some submissions myself, which didn’t end up winning but it was fun nonetheless. The actual plot of the episode was interesting and fun as well. It starts with Squidward annoying everyone with his clarinet playing. Once he wakes up from a nap, his clarinet goes missing which turns the episode black and white. This is the first and still only time that an episode is almost completely black and white. After questioning SpongeBob, they team up to question other suspects. After questioning suspects, they were led to Jellyfish Fields. It turned out that a Jellyfish stole his clarinet, which was a good twist. After that, the episode is no longer black and white and the You Bring the Color winners are showcased. There are just so many unique and interesting things about this episode and the leadup to it that makes it easily earn a spot on this list."Krusty Towers" (#11)
I am amazed that Mr. Krabs was able to suddenly turn the Krusty Krab into a hotel. It definitely makes sense from a business standpoint, as we all know how he likes money. I really like the hotel code that was repeated throughout the episode: “We shall never deny a guest even the most ridiculous request.” What followed was many hilarious and ridiculous requests by Patrick to Squidward. This drives him to quit and come to the hotel as a guest himself. He made just as many ridiculous requests, abiding by the hotel code. After an indoor pool is installed, Patrick jumps in and causes the building to collapse, sending everyone to the hospital. The fact that things can fail and crumble just as easily as they can be built up, if not easier."SB-129" (#10)
Seeing how much things changed so far into the future and what happened in the past was very interesting. The fact that Squidward was frozen in the Krusty Krab freezer for 2,000 years surprised me that no one ever found him, since SpongeBob would need to go in there to get things, but I digress. The introduction of the time machine made it all the more compelling, and we got to see more time periods. I liked how Squidward reinvented history and was the one to invent jellyfishing. I’ve always enjoyed the concept of time travel and all of the ramifications it brings."The Camping Episode" (#9)
Another memorable episode with an iconic song in it. To start off, Squidward thinks SpongeBob and Patrick are going away camping for the weekend, but it turns out that they only went ten feet away from SpongeBob’s house. Annoyed by this, Squidward joins them to try and show them “real camping.” It was fun watching Squidward try to set up his automated tent, which ultimately failed miserably. One of the best sequences of the episode is when Patrick kept failing to heat up a marshmallow over the fire. The scenes with the sea bears are some of the best as well. I thought the twist at the end with the sea rhinoceros was interesting as well."Hello Bikini Bottom!" (#8)
I tend to enjoy all double length episodes of the show, and this one is no different. It amazed me that Squidward’s musical talent was recognized as good, with all other instances portraying him as a terrible clarinet player. Colonel Carper steps in and offers to be their band manager. However, with Mr. Krabs being his typical self, interjects and takes over as band manager. By the cheapest means possible, he obtains all of the necessary equipment. I find it funny that their first gig was at a supermarket, as you don’t ever see something like that in a grocery store. What followed was a revelation that Mr. Krabs sold the Krusty Krab to a pawn shop. What perplexed me was that the entire Krusty Krab fit inside the pawn shop. They played at another interesting location as well, being a retirement home. This was my favorite part of the episode, where the elderly fish kept complaining about the music being too loud, even when SpongeBob and Squidward were completely silent. After that, Mr. Krabs redirects Ned and the Needlefish to play at the Electronics Warehouse so they can hijack the concert location. Once they get out of there, a meteor shower attracts a large crowd while SpongeBob and Squidward are playing music, which makes Krabs think he can charge people. It ultimately fails in the end. I like how the episode ends with them going back to the Krusty Krab."It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" (#7)
This is another unique episode that I have had fond memories of from over the years. I remember watching the premiere of this back in 2012 and it still holds up to this day. There are so many things that I love about the holiday season and this episode has been part of my annual traditions ever since. SpongeBob’s kind heartedness and innocence was truly on display as he wasn’t affected by Plankton’s Jerktonium. This however came after SpongeBob willingly distributed fruit cake made by Plankton to the Bikini Bottomites, unaware of the Jerktonium. SpongeBob came to Sandy, who was affected by the Jerktonium, for help. A cure was found in the form of a musical number which ultimately saved the day. This is a great story and it didn’t stop there. The robot version of SpongeBob that Plankton made was running rampant through Bikini Bottom in an attempt to destroy SpongeBob’s good name. The one thing that always puzzled me was how Santa thought at first that it was the real SpongeBob who was destroying Bikini Bottom. It was quite interesting that Plankton almost got away with it and momentarily was the only one on his good list. In the end everything is resolved and things seem to be back to normal. There were many great references in this episode as well, capping off this holiday episode."Survival of the Idiots" (#6)
I found this episode to be quite interesting and fun as well. It is quite compelling that it only snowed in Sandy’s treedome and nowhere else. When SpongeBob and Patrick arrive, they see a video of Sandy stating that she’s hibernating for the winter, and funnily enough specifically points out SpongeBob to stay away. They are soon trapped for the winter and begin to panic. I enjoyed watching all of their survival techniques. What set things off was when they took fur from Sandy which woke her up. As with every other winter themed episode, this one easily earns a spot on this list."A Friendly Game" (#5)
I’ve always enjoyed going mini golfing and seeing it play out in SpongeBob’s house was fun. Most of the obstacles placed were typical for mini golf with some added twists. My favorite part is the running gag of “Play it where it lies,” which I follow myself IRL because of this episode. When things went over to Squidward’s house the stakes were raised. The fact that SpongeBob actually used a blindfold to find his golf ball was quite interesting. What really made the episode for me was just the overall abnormal ways they played mini golf."Frozen Face-Off" (#4)
This episode contains elements from many different things I enjoy. This includes sports, winter, and competition. The premise is a sled race for a cash prize, which naturally attracts all Bikini Bottomites. I found it funny that Patrick chose gummy worms to pull his sled. I like the twist that the race was all a ruse by Plankton so he could get into an empty Krusty Krab, as seen throughout the episode. As the episode went on, more and more sleds got destroyed and the added element of the abominable snow mollusk made it even more entertaining. The episode ends with yet another good twist as it turned out that the abominable snow mollusk just wanted Patrick’s jelly beans."Krabs à la Mode" (#3)
An ice rink in a restaurant has got to be one of the most unique concepts I’ve seen. The fact that the hockey team was playing at the Krusty Krab in the same area where customers were eating their food was interesting. I thought it was funny how simply changing the temperature on the thermostat would either create an icy surface or a pool of water. This is such a fun episode."Christmas Who?" (#2)
Christmas is by far my most favorite holiday and this episode is a great way to compliment that. Before the time of this episode, Christmas wasn’t celebrated in Bikini Bottom and Sandy introduced it to SpongeBob, who in turn introduced it to the rest of the Bikini Bottomites. It’s a great origin story that offers a lot of great moments. We also yet again got to see another side of Squidward, who despite his normally selfish ways helped cheer SpongeBob up when no one else believed in him. At the end of the episode, the actual Santa appeared thanking Squidward for his kindness, which set the stage for future holiday traditions in Bikini Bottom."Bubblestand" (Honorable Mention #1)
This is an iconic episode for many reasons. From the technique to “It’s a giraffe!,” there are many things to remember from this episode. Paying for bubble blowing lessons is such a fun concept and was played out well. Squidward initially refused the technique but when he got fed up he angrily did it and blew a huge bubble. He became so invested with something that he was annoyed with. It still amuses me to this day that SpongeBob can make all of those different shaped bubbles.
"Welcome to the Bikini Bottom Triangle" (Honorable Mention #2)
I’ve always been a big fan of the Legend of Bikini Bottom episodes, and this one is my favorite of the bunch. I always enjoy seeing a bunch of items piled up as it provides many easter eggs. There is a lot of comedy in this episode. The running gag with Patrick asking about his cufflinks was the best part.
"The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom" (Honorable Mention #3)
As we don’t see stop motion much in SpongeBob, this is a nice treat. There aren’t very many Halloween-specific themed episodes in the series, so when this came out in 2017 it was a pleasant experience. SpongeBob having an entirely new outlook on Halloween after a talk from Patrick set the whole episode in motion. I like how they went by the motto “Scary = Funny.” They even bravely get on the Flying Dutchman’s ship, and while Patrick is quickly frightened, SpongeBob still doesn’t give in to fear. It was interesting how at first when he saw his friends’ souls captured by the Flying Dutchman, he thought it was fake. However, once he saw Patrick’s soul captured as well. All in all, this is a great episode to watch around Halloween time.
"Rock Bottom" (Honorable Mention #4)
A lot of memorable and funny moments are contained within this episode. The fact that the road leading to Rock Bottom is completely straight down and perpendicular is quite interesting. SpongeBob missing every single bus no matter what he did to try and wait for one is the highlight for me. After having to wait in an over 300 person line, all he found out was that there wasn’t another bus until morning. That’s where we find a quite unique dialect. I like the twist at the end where all SpongeBob had to do to get home was tie his glove balloon to his arm. At the end, Patrick is on a bus headed to Rock Bottom to get SpongeBob, thinking he’s still there, ending this enjoyable episode.
"Club SpongeBob" (Honorable Mention #5)
SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward being stranded together in the Kelp Forest made for an enjoyable experience. SpongeBob and Patrick worked together to survive, while Squidward worked alone. This eventually led to a bunch of supplies falling out of the sky, which SpongeBob and Patrick consulted the Magic Conch Shell about. The Magic Conch is the most iconic part of this episode. The Magic Conch was not on Squidward’s side, which taught the lesson that working together is better for everyone.
