Donald Edward Chomp (November 12, 1936 – April 28, 2015) was an American television actor, producer, director and animator. He is best known for making his TV show, Garchomp's Alliance, which ran from 2008 until 2012[1].
Early life, education and career
Chomp was born in Los Angeles, California on November 12, 1936. He was the youngest child[2] of Edward Chomp (1897–1938[3]) and Myra Robertson (1898–1943[4]). He had two older brothers, Leland (1933–) and Dick (1935–2015[5]). Through his father, Chomp had four older half siblings, Anne (1918–2015[6]), Edward Jr. (1920–1930[7]), Charles (1922–) and Jillian (1924–1943[8]). His childhood was quite a rough one. His father died of a heart attack on January 20, 1938 and the following year his mother abandoned the family in 1939. Chomp was put into care by his uncle and grandfather shortly after his uncle Robert Jr.'s death in 1940. After World War II, Chomp's brothers were thinking of ideas what to do when they got older. After graduation from high school in 1955, Chomp went to study at the University of Minnesota[9]. While he was studying, he met then seventeen year Joan Mackenzie, who at the time was in a relationship with Marlon Stillman Jr.[10]. Chomp fell in love with Mackenzie on July 9, 1957[11]. In 1959, Chomp, then 22, said to Star Tribune that he wanted to be an actor. In 1960, three years of engagement, Chomp married Mackenzie[12]. They had no children, but at the time of his wedding, Chomp was already an uncle, to five, Leland Jr. (1954–2017), Chelsea (1955–1992), Marlon (1957–2016) and Elizabeth (1959–1961). But on November 5, 1962, Chomp graduated at the University of Minnesota, but on that same day, Leland informed him that their grandfather had died a couple of days ago[13][14]. His grandfather's death really shocked Chomp. Over 1000 people attended Robert's funeral the next day. Chomp was the one with the most sadness.
Later life
In the 1960s, Chomp met three Canadian Prime Ministers[15]. His wife Joan states that she admired Canada just as much as she admired LBJ[16]. In 1970, the two met UN leader, U Thant. Chomp remained in contact with Thant until Thant's death in 1974. In 1979, the Chomps attended the Prince Albert Rising and they saw Diefenbaker without a surprise. After Trudeau was defeated by Joe Clark, Chomp went back to the U.S. Joan asked him to give her a makeover, and he did.[17]. On November 1, 1987, Chomp's wife died of renal failure, while the two were with René Lévesque for a dinner party[18].
Garchomp's Alliance
In 2006, Chomp's nephew, Leland Jr. decided to teach animation. Because of Chomp, he'd knew what he wanted to do. And on April 7, 2008, the show was aired for the first time. His show starred many people, including Hugh Laurie, Lisa Kudrow and of course, Ernest Borgnine. The show ended on July 9, 2012, with the sudden death of Borgnine. Not only Borgnine's death shocked Chomp, he lost his hopes for the day.
Death
Chomp died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 28, 2015, aged 78, due to Acute Leukemia.[19] His funeral was held on May 1, 2015.
