The book starts with SpongeBob visiting [[Jellyfish Fields]] with {{Link|Patrick}}. He uses his [[jellyfish net]] to catch litter across the field, including an empty box of Jellyfish Chow. To spread awareness of Bikini Bottom's litter problem, he and Patrick start to pass flyers out to citizens. SpongeBob goes into town and starts singing a cleaning song: "Sweep up the trash and put it in the bag! Make a clean sweep and we'll all be glad."
 
Soon, Bikini Bottom is cleaned up. However, SpongeBob is still obsessed with cleaning and starts taking items before they become trash. He takes a juice box from [[Gus|a fish]] while he is still drinking it, and takes spoons from [[Krusty Krab]] customers before they finish their meals. {{Link|Mr. Krabs}} is furious.
 
SpongeBob takes {{Link|Squidward}}'s houseplant while it is still alive, prompting Squidward to give him a lecture. He explains to SpongeBob that cleaning up is a good thing, but that he is taking people's things too soon. SpongeBob apologizes and gives everyone their things back. In Jellyfish Fields, a jellyfish is crying because his lucky cardboard box is gone. SpongeBob runs after him, carrying the Jellyfish Chow box from earlier.
