SpongBob and Patrick are scared over a cricket.

SpongeBob and Patrick start the episode running and screaming. They run into Sandy, explaining that a beast is chasing them. The "beast" is really a cricket from the surface. SpongeBob and Patrick notice that Sandy is packing food, water, dynamite, and tents in her jeep. SpongeBob and Patrick ask why she is packing. Sandy explains that she is packing for a camp in the wilderness. SpongeBob and Patrick ask if they can come, and Sandy says no because the camp is dangerous for them. When Sandy gets in her jeep, SpongeBob and Patrick sneak in her trunk to try to go to her camp. However, the two Patrick fall out of the jeep when they are on their way there. The good news is that they fall out with food, water, and a tent.

SpongeBob and Patrick are in the wilderness, and SpongeBob tells Patrick that he will set up the tent while Patrick starts a campfire. When the tent is set up, Patrick is finished with the campfire, but SpongeBob then notices that Patrick did not make a campfire, but rather burned their food instead. SpongeBob tries to put out the fire with the tent, but that just sets the tent on fire. He pours water on it, which makes it go out, and SpongeBob drinks the remaining water. By now, SpongeBob and Patrick burned their food, ruined their tent, and lost their water. When SpongeBob tries to come up with a plan, Patrick stops him, stating it was his turn to think of an idea. After a long period of time, Patrick ask SpongeBob if he wanted to play hide and seek, before they then notice a nearby cave.

They go in the cave and decide to spend the night there. However, an old fish appears and tells them the cave was their new home. He then explains that he's lived in the cave for 40 years and there is no way out of the valley. SpongeBob and Patrick try to make shelter for themselves, but then SpongeBob is then convinced that Patrick wants to eat him. SpongeBob attempts to make a protective fort at first, but then the old fish tells him that "it's eat or be eaten," making SpongeBob realize that he must eat Patrick before Patrick eats him. The two then make attempts to eat each other.

The old fish is impressed, and he then reveals that he is really Sandy, who tells SpongeBob and Patrick that falling out of her truck was no accident; she was merely testing their survival skills. She then gives the two survival badges, but they get an interest of eating her and approach her while saying "Eat or be eaten!". Sandy runs away, stating that she'll bring more granola next time, as the episode ends.

Trivia

General

  • An early script outline lists this episode under various alternate titles: "Survival of the Misfittest," "Spongenapped!," "The Most Dangerous Hobby," "Captured Kidnapped Lost Castaways," and "Welcome to the Errordome."[5]
File:Season5tosaveasquirrel.jpeg
The original plotline.
  • In this episode's outline, SpongeBob and Patrick don't fall out of the jeep and the trio makes it to the campsite. Unfortunately, SpongeBob and Patrick see Sandy get carried off by a pterodactyl. They team up with the old geezer (who seems to still be Sandy in disguise, as this idea was present in even earlier drafts) to tackle extreme challenges and rescue her.
  • In the UK and Ireland, the scene were SpongeBob and Patrick are in the back of Sandy's truck was edited to darken the screen due to fast motion.[6]
  • Patrick's scream from "Scaredy Pants" is reused when he and SpongeBob fall out of Sandy's Jeep.
  • Despite the title, ironically, neither SpongeBob nor Patrick actually save Sandy.
    • The title could make more sense because Sandy was dressed up as a caveman and SpongeBob and Patrick decided to save her.
  • It is revealed that Sandy has an underwater Jeep-Mobile and that her treedome has a back-garage.
  • In SpongeBob's flashback, it is revealed that Squidward has voodoo dolls of SpongeBob and Patrick.
  • This was the first episode that Luke Brookshier and Nate Cash worked on together, after Tom King left.
  • This is the first episode where a sand version of the Krusty Krab is seen.
  • This is the first episode to play the production tracks "The Chumbucket Rhumba" and "Gametime."
  • This is the second episode where it falsely appears that Patrick is eating SpongeBob. The first was "The Smoking Peanut."
  • This is the last episode to play any version of the track "Dangerous."
  • This is the last episode to use pencils for drawings.
  • There are some hints and clues that the cave fish is Sandy in disguise:
    • Before leaving for her trip, Sandy tells SpongeBob and Patrick about "eat or be eaten"; when they meet the cave fish, he says the exact same rule to them.
    • The cave fish has the same Texas accent as Sandy's.

Dub facts

  • In the Indonesian version, the scene where SpongeBob and Patrick setting up their encampment was cut due to time constraints.

Cultural references

File:To Save a Squirrel 50.jpg
Twinkie reference.
  • Patrick's sponge cake is a reference to the Twinkie.
  • SpongeBob sitting in a kettle of hot water and thinking it's a bath, plus Patrick cutting up and adding carrots, is a nod to a number of classic Bugs Bunny shorts in which an enemy attempts to cook Bugs Bunny in a similar fashion.

Errors

  • SpongeBob and Patrick could not have gotten into Sandy's suit just by crashing into her when her suit was zipped up.
    • Also, the air should have gotten out of Sandy's suit when she unzipped it, as she was underwater in that scene.

  • When SpongeBob says, "Well, we burned our food, ruined our tent, and lost all our water," his white teeth turn yellow for a split second.

SpongeBob's transparent hole.
  • When SpongeBob says, "Patrick, we are going to need to use our razor-sharp quick wits if we're going to make it out of here alive!," one of his green holes turns transparent for a split second.
  • Since Patrick burned the food supply and SpongeBob used all the water, they should not have had any food or water in the cave.
  • The old man said that SpongeBob and Patrick were going to be stuck in the cave forever, although one can see that they could have easily escaped through the huge, unblocked entrance to the cave.
  • When SpongeBob runs away from Patrick for the first time, Patrick's rock in the background disappears.
  • When SpongeBob checks to see if Patrick wants to eat him, the compass on his rock disappears.
  • When SpongeBob jumps out of the soup/stew, the carrots disappear.

  • Patrick seems to go under a puddle when running, however, it has the same elevation.

  • When SpongeBob and Patrick say they are still hungry after Sandy gives them their survivalist medals, Patrick pulls out his bottle of ketchup. However, in the next shot where they approach Sandy to eat her, the ketchup bottle disappears.
