Season 6/production

From SpongeBob Wiki

Throughout this season's production history, Vincent Waller shared various doodles and sneak peeks from upcoming episodes and crew meetings on his blog, Welcome to Incoherent-Thought.

2007

On February 8, Vincent Waller promised a rant about Standards and Practices the following day.[1] This never came to fruition, although on February 13 he would explain that the set of rules had blocked out certain ideas for new episodes: "The other things that were blocked out were actual show ideas for the future. You wouldn't want to spoil the surprise do you?"[2]

On October 15, Waller would post a post-animatic storyboard cover completed on that day, with doodles censoring the majority of it. The executive producer was Paul Tibbitt, the storyboard directors were Casey Alexander and Zeus Cervas, the production manager was Jennie Hammond, the production manager was Noeli Rosas, the production assistant was Andrew Goodman, and the animatic director was Andrew Overtoom. One of the doodles featured Patrick with a large, drooping nose.[3] It would end up being from "No Nose Knows."

On October 19, Waller would post a few pieces of another heavily doodled-over pitch storyboard cover completed on October 15. The title was made out to be "T-- -rusty Krush---," Sean Charmatz was working on it, and the production code was #193-627.[4] This episode would end up being "Krusty Krushers."

On October 24, Waller posted a drawing of a character named Killa Gorilla, a parody of Magilla Gorilla, with one of those drawings being on the back of a season 6 storyboard, as the season's production code tag "#193-" can be seen upside down.

On Halloween, he would post another drawing of Killa alongside a celebratory holiday drawing, both of which could be found on the back of another season 6 storyboard. A very rough drawing of Perch Perkins could be found on the front side of the Halloween doodle, meaning that it was from "Grooming Gary."[5]

On November 1, Waller posted a doodle of a man facing an "incident of friendly fire" on the back of a storyboard featuring two large, buff figures.[6] This board would end up being from "Krusty Krushers."

On November 19, Waller posted a warm-up drawing on the back of a storyboard with SpongeBob next to Gary, with the former saying "Ninety-nine-,";[7] it would turn out to be from "Boating Buddies."

2008

On February 28, Waller posted some doodles with some being on two storyboard covers; the first would read "-mer Part 2," had a production code ending in -10, and was delivered in some fashion on the 13th during some month in 2007;[8] this would turn out to be from "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One." The other one read "Squid's Vi-," with its executive producer being Paul Tibbitt, storyboard directors being Casey Alexander, Zeus Cervas, and Vincent Waller, production manager being Jennie Hammond, production coordinator being Alvaro Zelaya, production assistant being Andrew Goodman, and the animation director being Alan Smart. The production code ended in -32, and it was a revised pitch storyboard, with the first 65 pages being cleaned up and resubmitted on that day.[8] It would end up being from "Squid's Visit."

On February 29, John Seymore would upload two backgrounds for an episode on his portfolio with the production code #603. It would end up being from "House Fancy."[9]

On March 13, Waller posted a doodled-over storyboard cover, reading "Gu---B-b." It's executive producer was Paul Tibbitt, the storyboard directors were Luke Brookshier and Nate Cash, the production manager was Jennie Hammond, the production coordinator was Alvaro Zelaya, the production assistant was Phil Harris, and the animation director was Alan Smart. The production code was trimmed to just #1, and it was a pitch storyboard, being delivered on March 10.[10] It would ending up being from "Gullible Pants."

File:Ditchin production meeting .jpeg

On March 19, Waller uploaded pictures of a game being played by the crew, alongside a production meeting between Noeli Rosas, Alvaro Zelaya, and Phil Harris.[11] Some of the storyboards they reviewed were from "Ditchin'."

On March 24, Waller posted a picture of an episode outline he drew over. This outline was the basis for "Pineapple Fever."[12]

On April 8, Waller posted a doodled-over storyboard cover, reading "Not fur Paa." It's executive producer was Paul Tibbitt, the storyboard directors were Casey Alexander and Zeus Cervas, the production manager was Jennie Hammond, the production coordinator was Alvaro Zelaya, the production assistant was Phil Harris, and the animation director was Tom Yasumi. The production code had been trimmed down to #193-, was a pitch storyboard, being delivered on that day.[13] It would ending up being from "No Hat for Pat."

File:193-632 board 01.jpeg

On May 2, Waller posted a doodle from a storyboard cover ending in "-isit."[14] This was another board from "Squid's Visit."

On May 29, Waller posted an image of a breakdown meeting and a doodle he drew there. A storyboard cover could be seen with the title "GulliBob" on the bottom right of the first image.[15] This was the original title for "Gullible Pants." There were two other storyboards and a background design at the meeting for other episodes, although they are unknown.

Waller would post two more designs from the above episode by Robertryan Cory on June 11, 5 days after they were approved.[16]

On June 25, Waller would post a doodle of a "yearbook head" in front of a storyboard cover that read merely "-ve-." This storyboard would end up being more production material for "Pineapple Fever."[17]

On July 22, Waller would post an episode outline by Richard Pursel that he doodled over during a writers' meeting two days before. It is possibly for "Pet or Pests" or a potentially scrapped episode based on what can be seen, as it is censored.[18]

On September 3, Waller posted a painting from this episode, as well as two shots of the painting going through the animation process at Rough Draft Korea.[19] This painting ended up being from the episode "Overbooked."

On September 4, Waller posted designs by Robertryan Cory from two upcoming episodes.[20] On September 11, he said that a special was taking up his doodling time.[21] The first design would be from "Sand Castles in the Sand," and the second design and "special" Waller referred to would end up being a part of "Truth or Square," the series' 10th anniversary special.

2009

On April 7, Waller posted a piece of obscured rough press art starring SpongeBob and Patrick. This art was created in the lead up to the show's 10th anniversary, and likely served as another sneak peak at "Truth or Square."[22]

Production notes

November 16, 2007: "Last night I was Supervising the mix on a few up coming SpongeBob shorts, and had some time during the mix down to draw a little. Paul Tibbitt was there just ahead of me leaving behind his page of doodles. They were very entertaining. After the Sponge has run it's run we'll be lucky if Paul sells a show of his own. Anyway, I suppressed the urge to knab his page drawings and post them, it just wouldn't be right without his okay. The lucky folks at the Mix studio must have an amazing collection of drawings that people leave behind.

An Anonymous question: Ever notice how cartoonists' doodles often create ugly, demented, contorted faces or maybe normal faces that are in torment, anguish, rage, pain? Wheres the happy?

Answer: When one spends all day drawing and writing happy go lucky kid friendly drawings, yes sometimes it is cathartic to draw the flip side. That being said most of the cartoonists I know are very happy people. We get paid to draw and if we're lucky to write. Getting paid to do something most of us are compelled to do anyway, how could that cause anything but happiness."[43]

December 11, 2007 - What Does a Creative Director Do?: "I realized I hadn't really answered the question. So here is the straight answer.

I work closely with the Executive Producer(Paul Tibbitt) supporting him and assisting him as needed in writing meetings, animatic editing, retakes, recording, storyboarding, character and prop design, as well as supervising all aspects production.

I hope this answers what this Creative Director's duties include."[44]
