Synopsis

The episode begins with Bunny asking a toaster to spit out a piece of toast, to which the toast ejects it directly on to her face. This causes a laugh track to play, which is present throughout the rest of the episode. The rest of the Star family then proceed to enter the scene. Squidina is confused by the sound of the cheering audience but shrugs it off. At breakfast, Patrick says he can't wait to have boss for dinner. Cecil is confused, but then looks at the calendar and sees he invited one of his bosses over for dinner tonight. Cecil laments, thinking he'll make a bad impression since nothing is ready, but his family encourages him, saying "as long as you've got your family, everything's gonna be just dandy."

One of his bosses rings the doorbell, and it is revealed to be Mr. Nana. Cecil introduces Mr. Nana to his family, and they all courtsey. They then welcome Mr. Nana to the kitchen, just before the doorbell rings again. This time, it's Mr. Rilla, Cecil's boss from the zoo. Having not planned for another one of his bosses to arrive, Cecil slams the door and runs to the kitchen. Mr. Nana asks if everything is all right, to which Cecil responds that there must have been a ghost that rang the doorbell. Cecil then calls for a family meeting under the dinner table.

Under the table, Cecil informs his family that he accidentally invited two of his bosses over. He adds that the two bosses cannot see each other, and that Mr. Rilla will most likely attempt to eat Mr. Nana. Squidina assures him that she and the family will keep Mr. Nana in the kitchen and Cecil can keep Mr. Rilla in the living room. Bunny also plans to make a meal with bananas for Mr. Rilla and a meal without bananas for Mr. Nana. Cecil emerges from under the table and goes to let in Mr. Rilla inside. As soon as Cecil opens the door, he is punched by Mr. Rilla and flies into a wall.

Cecil shows Mr. Rilla into the living room and tells him that his kids prepared pre-dinner entertainment. Squidina lays out the tire swing and finger painting for him, much to Mr. Rilla's delight. Bunny tells Cecil that Mr. Nana needs to use the restroom, so Cecil puts a lampshade over Mr. Rilla's head to prevent him from seeing Mr. Nana. Mr. Nana walks into the living room and is shocked, then marvels over the lampshade on Mr. Rilla's head. He moves to turn it on, but Cecil quickly grabs his hand and ushers him to the toilet. When Cecil takes off the lampshade, Mr. Rilla punches him again, his head now shaped like the lampshade he was wearing. Cecil remarks that that idea was "a little dim."

Cecil seats Mr. Rilla at the dinner table, just before Mr. Nana walks into the kitchen. Cecil quickly tackles him into the living room and tells him that dinner is now happening in the living room. Squidina then treats Mr. Nana to some nonexistent tea. Cecil instructs Patrick to entertain Mr. Nana in the kitchen while pretending to be Cecil. Cecil then tells GrandPat to entertain Mr. Nana in the living room while also pretending to be Cecil. After GrandPat asks Cecil what he will do, Cecil tells him he's doing the most important job of all: making sure no more bosses get in.

In the living room, GrandPat is twisting Mr. Nana to the point of his peel coming undone. Cecil quickly pulls GrandPat off of him and apologizes for his behavior. Mr. Nana remarks he didn't know Cecil had that kind of fight in him and places him in a chokehold. Bunny then calls for everyone, saying that dinner is ready. Cecil almost walks into the kitchen, but Bunny catches him and tell him that Patrick is there pretending to be him. The camera then cuts to Patrick getting repeatedly punched in the face by Mr. Rilla. Cecil decides that he will have to imitate Bunny. Cecil then assigns Bunny the role of being the lamp and places a lampshade on her head.

Cecil walks into the kitchen as Bunny and serves dinner to Mr. Rilla. Excited by dinner, Mr. Rilla. throws Patrick out of the kitchen and into the living room. Cecil, as Bunny, then walks into the living room and serves dinner to Mr. Nana. However, this turns out to be a giant pile of bananas, which was intended to be for Mr. Rilla. Mr. Nana screams, getting the attention of Mr. Rilla in the other room. Cecil tells Mr. Rilla to calm down, but Mr. Nana screams that she cooked his cousins. Hearing this, Cecil takes off the jellyfish hive on his head and says that he is Cecil. Mr. Nana points to Cecil, GrandPat, and Patrick and exclaim that they're all Cecil and screams and asks what's going on. Mr. Rilla then enters the living room and sees Mr. Nana.

Chaos ensues, and Mr. Rilla chases Mr. Nana across the living room, in turn being chased after by Cecil, GrandPat, and Patrick. Mr. Rilla finally catches Mr. Nana and tries to eat him. Mr. Nana remarks that he knew they were going to have him for dinner, but this is ridiculous. This causes the sound of the laugh track to play. Squidina notices this and questions what is going on. Squidina is then pushed off screen by a title card, and the narrator starts to promote another episode of The Patrick Star Show the Sitcom, where all the Stars are upside down.

The episode cuts to the end of the dinner, with Mr. Nana happily making his exit and thanking Cecil for the dinner, telling him to consider himself promoted. After Mr. Nana leaves, Bunny tells Cecil that everything turned out just dandy, and the two share a kiss. The credits then roll, and the characters are still, except for Squidina, who moves her eyes around. Then, in a sudden burst of frustration, Squidina tosses aside the transparent overlay for the credit sequence and asks if anyone besides her saw the commercial break, the credits, or is hearing the laughter. Patrick responds that it's probably just the house settling. Squidina then asks him to explain "them," and points to a live action audience and a cameraman right in front of them. Squidina then exclaims that they're trapped in a sitcom. Cecil dismisses it as her imagination.

Just then, the screen glitches out and Squidina is suddenly replaced with a slightly altered version of herself. Bunny notices this and says that she's been recast, before quickly being recast herself. Shortly after, Cecil is recast with a caricature of Jerry Seinfeld. GrandPat remarks that there is indeed something screwy going on, before being recast with a caricature of Danny DeVito. Patrick, the only one not recast, and the rest of family then all say that "as long as you've got your family, everything tastes like candy" as the credits roll.

The camera zooms out to show a TV, which Squidina turns off with a remote. She questions if Patrick is ever going to figure it out. Slappy, dressed as Patrick, responds that he wouldn't bet on it, saying Patrick is not the brightest star in the sea.

Trivia

General

File:Sitcom Stars 178.png
  • When Squidina is recasted, she turns into one of the original designs of herself, as seen in the series' pitch bible.
  • The live-action audience scene was recycled from the beginning of The Muppets Take Manhattan during "Together Again," albeit inverted, this was also shown in the SpongeBob SquarePants season 11 episode "ChefBob."
  • During the second fake credit roll, some of the credits have actual crew members with their names changed to have an aquatic theme to it. They include:
    • Shark Ceccarelli = Marc Ceccarelli, executive producer
    • Vincent Walleye = Vincent Waller, executive producer
    • Kenny Fishenger = Kenny Pittenger, co-executive producer and showrunner
    • Claudia Blue-Finnelli = Claudia Spinelli, mentioned in special thanks
    • Kristen Carplan = Kristen Caplan, line producer
    • Piranha Cohen = Lianna Cohen, executive in charge for Nickelodeon
    • Jennie Monicalamari = Jennie Monica, vice president of animation production
    • Ja-Cod Flusher = Jacob Fleisher, writer
    • Mako Pelensky = Mike Pelensky, writer and storyboard director
    • Guppy Del Valle = Gabe Del Valle, writer and storyboard director
    • Wet Varon = Brett Varon, supervising director

    • Monicuttlefish DeScallopo = Monica DeStefano. Brett Varon's co-animatic editor
    • Ben Kruzrockfish = Ben Kurzrock, script coordinator
    • Andy Goodman's FIshing Rod = Andrew Goodman, staff writer
    • Egoblin Shark Plum = Ego Plum, music editor
    • Dave Ten Nets Full Of Fish = Dave Tennant, writer and staff writer
      • Additionally, this is similar to "Late for Breakfast," because that episode did the exact same thing.
  • This is the first episode of the show to credit Bunny's toaster.
  • This is the first episode with the season 4-style crediting system with two storyboard directors, instead of going with one director and one artist.
    • However the series is still storyboard-driven as opposed to script-driven, and the only time two storyboard directors were credited prior was on "Enemies à la Mode."

Dub facts

  • In the Latin American Spanish dub, this is the first episode of the series, and the SpongeBob franchise in general, to be dubbed in Doblaje Audio Traducción (DAT) from Mexico, following the closure of Etcétera Group's main headquaters in Caracas, Venezuela and moving its operations to Miami, Florida. This caused several changes in the dubbing, at that point that Etcétera outsource the dubbing of the SpongeBob franchise to DAT, who now is in charge of the dubbing direction, the casting, the translating, the editing, the mixing and many aditional voices. Despite this, some Venezuelan actors are still involved in the dubbing of the franchise, with the voices being made at a Venezuelan dubbing studio outsourced by Etcétera and/or DAT, along with Etcétera Miami (with Luis Carreño still recording SpongeBob), and Groove Audio Post in Chile (with Sixnalie Villalba voicing Karen and Mariangny Álvarez voicing Pearl).

Cultural references
