Guideline

This page documents an Encyclopedia SpongeBobia guideline. This is an accepted standard that editors must follow for purposes of improving the quality of content on the wiki.

This page provides the details into the layout and formatting used in the SpongeBob SquarePants character articles.

General

This section outlines general guidelines for the character articles.

Naming scheme

Patrick Star will be used as an example page name:

  • Character article
  • Patrick Star
  • Character appearances
  • Patrick Star/appearances
  • Character galleries
  • Patrick Star/gallery
  • Patrick Star/gallery/EPISODE

General article policies

  • 1. Any character whose name has been been official and confirmed may have their own article.
  • 2. All character articles must have the source of the name listed within the article and at a master name source page at ESB:Project Characters.
  • 3. Any character whose names not yet been revealed will have the Category:Unnamed characters category.
  • 4. All characters will have the Category:Characters category, which will be generated from the infobox.

Character appearances policies

  • 1. All characters with 10 appearances or less will not have their own appearance subpage. Instead, their appearances will be listed in a table on their main biography article. Characters with more than 10 appearances can have their own appearances subpage.
  • 2. All characters will have a table that lists their appearances, in production order. Each table will list the episode name and what the character did in that episode, no matter how big or small. I have noticed that these tables have been removed in the past, so do not delete these tables.
  • 3. All characters will have an appearance table as follows, the example taken from Fred/appearances.
{{Appear/top}}
{{Appear|1b|Reef Blower|Driving a boatmobile}}
{{Appear|2b|Ripped Pants|At Goo Lagoon}}
{{Appear|4b|Boating School|Says "My Leg" twice; crossed street on boating course}}
{{Appear|5b|Home Sweet Pineapple|Boatmobile is eaten by nematodes}}
{{Appear|7a|Hall Monitor|Says "My Leg" when SpongeBob was on patrol}}
{{Appear|25b|Patty Hype|'''Called Fred''' by Tom.}}
{{Appear/bottom}}

The template consists of the production number, the episode name, followed by anything the character did in the episode, no matter how minor. In cases in which the character plays a prominent roll, there is no need to describe the entire thing, but just give a brief description. For example, in the case of Squidward's appearance list for "Band Geeks," do not describe all his roles in the episode. Use a general description of his role(s) in the episode: "He organizes a marching band to impress Squilliam."

Character names

  • 1. All characters must have an exact source as to their actual names right on their articles.
  • 2. All characters with names must be listed at ESB:Character names with their names and episode sources.
  • 3. ESB will use only character names that are used exactly as they are mentioned. (example: Fred is Fred, not Frederick, Fredrick, Alfred, etc., as only "Fred" was used in the episode.)
  • 4. Characters with multiple names revealed will be used in the order they are mentioned. (example: for Nancy Suzy Fish, Nancy was revealed first, followed by Suzy Fish)
  • 5. In order to prevent the loss of information for certain characters, do not redirect or remove information just because a character's name is unsourced. Instead, tag the page and bring up the issue on this page: ESB:Character names under the "issues" section, and such will be addressed accordingly.

Infobox

  • 1. Limit the connections to just primary relationships, instead of listing every small friendship and temporary employment, among others.

Layout of sections

  • 1. All character articles will follow a uniform order of sections and subsection.
  • 2. Minor characters may not need so many subsections.
  • 3. If there is no information for a particular section, that section can be eliminated.
  • 4. Each character article will be broken down into the following sections and subsections:
==Character==
This is mainly for main and major characters. Here, we will describe the character's relevance to the series,
how the character was developed, any production details of the character, and the portrayer.
This can include describing the animation of the character over the seasons.

==Biography==
Under this section is the character's biography. This is mostly fact-based, such as
their history, their family, their friends, their occupation, and their hobbies.
Minor character do not necessarily need to have this section broken down.

===Early life===
Describe their early life, if any. Mr. Krabs is probably the character who may have the most amount of background information

===Career===
Describe their jobs, career, life goals, etc.

===Personal life===
Describe their personal life. This can be their hobbies, their relationships with family and friends, etc.

==Personality==
This section describes the character's personality, such has appearance (how they look/dress),
their likes, dislikes, fears, opinions, skills, weaknesses, etc.

==References==
{{Reflist}}

==External links==
This is for any relevant external links.

Grouping characters

Appearances

  • Main
    • Main - the main cast, as determined by Nickelodeon and Stephen Hillenburg. Consists of ten characters. (SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Karen, Sandy, Mrs. Puff, Pearl, and Gary)
    • Major - made several important appearances during the show, considered supporting/recurring. (Patchy, Potty, French Narrator, Mermaid Man, Barnacle Boy, Flying Dutchman, etc.)
    • Minor - some background characters that are significantly important. (Peterson Nat Tucker, Old Man Jenkins, Harold Bill Reginald Scott, etc.)
  • Background - made a lot of appearances during the show, but aren't significantly important.
  • Families - families of the "Main" characters.
  • Special - made for specific stories/episodes during the show.
  • Other - made small appearances during the show.

Biographies

  • Primary - the most biographical information of all characters
  • Secondary - less biographical information than primary characters, but more than tertiary characters
  • Tertiary - they barely have any biographical information

Notes

  • All characters, except those on the "Main" tab, should be sorted alphabetically.
  • Once ChList templates are absolutely perfect they should be protected, so that only administrators can change them.
