Synopsis

Patrick is too tired and out-of-shape to walk onto the stage, to Squidina's frustration. When she comments that his TV show might not work out, Cecil overhears and changes into his fitness uniform, teaching Patrick how to exercise. He takes out a recliner and starts doing exercises on it, eventually having it snap back up and fling him into the ceiling when he does jumping jacks. Next, Bunny comes in and sings about her Pilates classes in prison, but all the prisoners escape during her song. GrandPat then introduces his own old-fashioned fitness devices, which end up giving Patrick GrandPat's body while he does not exercise at all. GrandPat then begins tossing the equipment at Patrick, and then himself.

Patrick meets Patrick CaveStar.

An injured Patrick drags himself to bed, as Squidina tries to encourage him to go on. When she comments that getting Patrick into shape could take years, she gets the idea to send him back in time with the time closet. She uses one of GrandPat's devices to punch him into the time closet. Patrick ends up in a prehistoric cave, where Cave Patrick complains that Patrick has evolved to be such a wimp. He leads Patrick in a prehistoric training montage, ending with Patrick being chased by a dinosaur throughout history.

Patrick has gained lots of muscles.

In the present day, Patrick has become extremely muscular. He lifts up the entire house, then begins lifting the whole planet. He ends up gaining so much muscle that he explodes, and his head falls back down. Patrick tells the audience that sometimes it is important to exercise, and sometimes they just need to veg out, as his head is put in a plant pot while the rest of his body regrows.

Production notes

Eliza Herndon:

  • "I never thought that one day I'd get to draw conceringly jacked sea stars, Actual Dinosaurs, or do an incredibly fun 1930s inspired montage with outdated and likely dangerous exercise equipment for television... much less all in the same episode! The ‘30s montage was especially fun and indulgent to do, and getting to do all these fun perspective shots with the dinosaur and big, muscly Patrick was a great way to get out of my comfort zone."[10]

Amanda Donahue:

  • For Cecil's transformation, Donahue wrote, "Alright here it is, my crowning glory! My Sistine chapel!!!! I was ready to fight for this section, which thankfully I didn't have to, and if I'm ever going to toot my horn its going to be on this Sailor Cecil transformation. The roughs were a good starting point but I went ham on researching and referencing Sailor Scout transformations, especially Sailor Moon, for this. I'm just in love with how it turned out in animation everything is on point!"[7]
  • For Bunny's "Jailhouse Workout" song, Donahue wrote, "Another banger in this episode! My second musical number and holy" [****] "it was a big one. I worked on this one with my Artist Program Apprentice Doyung Lee who helped with thumbing out more of the defined movements and camera moves based off of the rough boards. From there it was really on me to figure out all her dance moves which I referenced as much as I could from that 50's-60's era."[7]

Cultural references

  • Bunny's Jailhouse Workout song is a reference to the 1957 Elvis Presley song "Jailhouse Rock."
  • Cecil's transformation into his workout clothes is a reference to the 1991 anime protagonist, Sailor Moon.
  • The title card for GrandPat's "Fitness for the Ages" segment was modeled after the end cards for the theatrical Fleischer Studios Popeye shorts.[3]
    • The card has a copyright date of "MMXXIII," meaning 2023 in Roman numerals.
      • A copyright date joke was done in "Mid-Season Finale," with the year 2021 in the storyboards, although in the final episode it was edited to say 2022.
  • The boat that Patrick splits apart is the RMS Titanic. Ironically, the actual ship did split apart when it sank on April 15, 1912.
