Synopsis

At the Krusty Krab, it is a very slow day with no customers and Mr. Krabs is not pleased with these result. However, SpongeBob is heard shouting his possession of eight gold doubloons. Upon hearing this, Mr. Krabs jumps over to SpongeBob to take the supposed coins for himself. SpongeBob explains to him that he and Patrick are merely playing a board game called "The Flying Dutchman's Treasure Hunt," which is based on a real treasure map.

Mr. Krabs sits down to play with them, and wins the game. He instantly becomes addicted, even throwing a potential paying customer and calling the restaurant closed as he continues to play with them, winning 17 times in a row. They play until late at night, when Patrick is passed out and a tired SpongeBob wants to go to bed. SpongeBob goes home but finds Mr. Krabs there. Despite Mr. Krabs' attempts to persuade him to play more, SpongeBob soon shouts that he wants to sleep, but apologizes as he tells his boss it is only a game. Disappointed, Mr. Krabs stops and realizes he got carried away and leaves, apologizing for his behavior.

The following morning, SpongeBob wakes up to hear Mr. Krabs' voice and finds him in a pirate ship outside his house. Mr. Krabs tells him that they are going to be real pirates and go on a real treasure hunt, as Patrick appears to eagerly join them. However, the two struggle to learn how to act like "real" pirates, and end up causing the boat to crash. The trio is forced to continue on foot, following instructions from the map, read by Mr. Krabs, who also tells them that they are not allowed to look at the map. Eventually, the map tells them to go 10,000 paces east from the seaweed with two leaves on it, and Mr. Krabs asks Patrick which way east is. He looks at a compass and points west. After walking 10,000 paces west, they realize that they have taken the wrong direction because Patrick thought Mr. Krabs said "Weast," and begin walking back.

After going around 9,552 paces east, they are exhausted and set up a camp to stay for the night. While trying to fall asleep, SpongeBob and Patrick get excited and find Mr. Krabs gone and the map all alone. They decide to look at the map but when they open it, they realize that it is actually their board game taped to a piece of paper. Mr. Krabs catches them, and they beg for mercy outside. However, his anger is forgotten when they realize that they are standing directly on top of the "X" that marks the spot, and start digging. SpongeBob and Patrick use their hands to dig instead of shovels before they find the treasure, and SpongeBob and Patrick ask each other what they will do with their shares.

Upon hearing this, Mr. Krabs selfishly says that, him being the captain, all of the treasure belongs to him. SpongeBob and Patrick get angry and state they deserve a share, since they found it. The trio begins fighting over the chest, as their arguing wakes up the Flying Dutchman, who appears and questions who dug up his loot. Scared, Mr. Krabs quickly blames SpongeBob and Patrick, the Dutchman questions this and they nervously confirm it. The ghost pirate congratulates SpongeBob and Patrick for saving him "a lot of digging." He takes the treasure, but gives them two gold coins as a reward, to their joy. Jealous, Mr. Krabs asks for a reward, but only receives a tiny plastic treasure chest, which the Dutchman explains is "based on a real treasure chest!" as he disappears, laughing maniacally.

After he leaves, Patrick remarks Mr. Krabs looks sweaty again.

Trivia

General

  • Patrick's line "C'mon sweaty" is reused in Bikini Bottom Brawlers.
  • The scene where Fred walks in the Krusty Krab has become a popular internet meme, mostly for the part when he says "Rev up those fryers!"
  • This marks the first appearance of the Flying Dutchman's ship.
  • The odds of Mr. Krabs rolling a 2 (1/36), SpongeBob rolling a 4 or lower (1/6), and Patrick rolling a 5 or lower (5/18) consecutively is 1 in 777.6.
  • This episode won as the letter "X" in the SpongeBob Z-A Countdown marathon because X marks the spot.
  • "My leg!:" Mr. Krabs throws Fred out of the Krusty Krab.
  • The opening credits for this episode are in light blue instead of the regular navy blue. This also happens with "Rock Bottom," the sister episode.
    • This is possibly due to a rendering error that occured when rendering out the opening credit sequence after the title card that caused the color of the credit text to mess up, therefore making it light blue.
  • The word "weast" as said by Patrick is basically a misheard word of "east." In different countries, the word "weast" is altered to match the misheard word with their respective languages.
    • In German, the misheard word is "wosten," based on "osten" (east) and "westen" (west).
    • In Czech, the misheard word is "záchod" (toilet) based on "západ" (west).
    • In Russian, the misheard word is "заскок," based on "скок" (hop) and "запад" (west).
  • This is the first episode to air on a Wednesday.
  • In the Croatian dub, the episode name is "Na Zapovijed Kapetane," which means "Aye Aye Captain." This can be a reference to the SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song.
  • In Spanish, this episode was called "¡Piratas!," which translates to "Pirates!"
  • This episode premiered on Dee Snider's 45th birthday.
  • This is the first episode that Vincent Waller worked on, although not as a creative director.
  • This is the first episode where Patrick wears the Krusty Krab employee hat, even though he does not work there.
  • This scene when SpongeBob wakes up in his underwear became a popular meme due to the face he makes.

Cultural references

  • The game cards of the Flying Dutchman's Treasure Hunt board are a spoof of the Monopoly game cards.
  • The gold doubloons the Flying Dutchman gave SpongeBob and Patrick look like the real San Antonio Mission quarter.

Errors

  • When Mr. Krabs looks through his telescope at the beginning of the episode, the Chum Bucket across the street is missing.
  • After SpongeBob says Mr. Krabs is all sweaty again, the X seems as if Mr. Krabs never dug yet.
  • When SpongeBob wakes up to find Mr. Krabs yelling, a bell sound is heard, yet there is no bell on the ship.
  • Patrick rolls a five when he sends Mr. Krabs to the brig, but a close-up of the card reveals the dice showing only two.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick first spot Mr. Krabs' map in the tent, there is a compass next to the map. When they go over to touch the map, the compass is gone. It does not reappear.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick are looking over the map, it appears flat as their eyes smoothly go over it, but when they take a closer look, it is their game board with lots of props like a tree and sand where the treasure is.
  • The map could not have rolled up as the game board was cardboard and had the game pieces on it.
File:Image0-4-0.jpg
SpongeBob's miscolored pupils.
  • When SpongeBob wakes up the next morning his pupils are miscolored.
  • When Mr. Krabs asks Patrick which way East is, Patrick thinks that Mr. Krabs said "Weast." Furthermore, he looks at the compass and points in the direction the compass was pointing, which was North at the time, so they end up going 10,000 paces North to the X. When they do not find the X, they go back 10,000 paces East to the X, but they would have had to have made an additional 10,000 paces South to reach the X, so they would have ended up going 30,000 paces in total.
  • Just when the scene where Mr. Krabs agrees to play the board game starts, something going "MOW!" can be very briefly and slightly heard, similar to Gary's voice.
  • While SpongeBob and Patrick are looking at the map, SpongeBob's eyelashes disappear for one frame.

Running gags

  • Mr. Krabs being called sweaty by SpongeBob or Patrick.
  • When the camera shows the close-up of the Dutchman's items, a female choir sings about the items.
  • Mr. Krabs "firing" Patrick for messing things up.
