Synopsis

The episode begins with SpongeBob jellyfishing in Jellyfish Fields. He tells a jellyfish to stay off the road because it's dangerous. Some men on motorcycles drive past him, and SpongeBob holds on to one of the men's jackets, ripping an 'M' off of it. He looks at the jacket when he has to let go of it. He presumes it says "The ild Ones," but he soon notices the "W" in his hand and figures out that they are called "The Wild Ones." A fish pops from the ground after hearing this and tells him that "The Wild Ones" are a group of vicious bikers who have destroyed cities. SpongeBob takes a shortcut by riding the transition bubbles to go to the Krusty Krab to tell Mr. Krabs about the bikers, but he does not listen, so he tells Patrick. Then, Mr. Krabs takes the opportunity to welcome the bikers and raises his prices in order to get them to eat there after hearing SpongeBob described them as "ravenous," thinking that he will profit from their business. SpongeBob and Patrick try to hide by getting in a clam, but got spitted out by the clam. They try hiding each other until Patrick stops it.

After Patrick says that if they dressed up like bikers, they would be the big scary bikers, SpongeBob and Patrick decide to dress in biker attire and ride into town on a paddle-unicycle and a paddle-tricycle, respectively. However, after the bikers arrive at the Krusty Krab, it turns out that they are elderly.

The Mild Ones.

The actual name of the biker gang is revealed to be 'The Mild Ones.' SpongeBob had the "M" upside-down. One of the biker that had the "M" ripped off of his jacket earlier takes his "M" back from SpongeBob, and The Mild Ones ride away. Shortly after this, it is revealed that Squidward decided to join with them, as the episode ends.

Release

Trivia

General

  • This episode was originally going to be titled "The Wild Ones."[2]
  • During the Summer Redstone-led era at Nickelodeon, greasers were often portrayed more negatively on the network. Notable examples included Hey Arnold's Frankie G and CatDog's antagonists The Greaser Dogs, with Doug antagonist Roger Klotz, a sixth grader who did not ride a motorcycle, dressing like a greaser as well. The episode may have continued this tradition, though in a more subtle way which involved poor judgement about The Mild Ones' true nature and age humor.
  • This is the 150th episode segment of the series.
  • This episode was released on the Season 4 Volume 2 DVD box set before it aired on American television.

    • The second episode where a shortcut to the Krusty Krab is shown, the first being "Wormy."
    • The second episode to show blood. The first is "Dying for Pie."
    • The second episode to reference Goofy Goober outside of the first movie. The first is the Goofy Goober back scratcher in "Chimps Ahoy."
  • This is the first episode where Vincent Waller is portrayed, having his voice used for the several fishes and the second clam.
  • This is the third episode where the letters W and M are switched around, the first being "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV," and the second being "No Weenies Allowed."
  • The things that SpongeBob has been telling Squidward while overreacting are:
    • Telling Squidward that they're out of napkins.
    • Telling Squidward that he accidentally removed the "Do Not Remove by Penalty of Law" tag on his mattress and begs him to hide him.
    • Telling Squidward that he's gone blind, but it's really just that the light has been turned off.
  • This is the last episode to use the production track "Hilo March."

Dub facts

  • The Arabic title for this episode is "الأشرار" (al-ashrar), which translates to "The Evil Ones," the Arabic name for the Wild Ones.

Cultural references

  • The title of this episode is a reference to the 1968 song "Born to Be Wild" by the rock band Steppenwolf. The song also served as the theme song for the 1969 motorcycle-themed film Easy Rider
  • SpongeBob and Patrick's biker outfits, as are an inspiration from the 1953 film, The Wild One.
    • The mistaken name of the group, "The Wild Ones," is a reference to the film as well.
    • The Mild Ones may have been a reference to the film's Black Rebels Motorcycle Club as well, as the members of the club would've been old by this point in time.

Errors

  • The bike rack that Mr. Krabs shows to SpongeBob appears in front of the Krusty Krab. However, in other scenes, the bike rack is gone.
