Water helmets
Water helmets are equipment created so that water breathers can come into Sandy's treedome or any place without breathable liquid water. They first appear in "Tea at the Treedome," coinciding with the first appearance of their creator, Sandy Cheeks.
Description
They are transparent, spherical helmets filled with water, worn by sea creatures so they can survive in Sandy's treedome. They also come in various shapes and sizes to comply with head shape of certain sea creatures, such as an oval shape for Mr. Krabs and Squidina, a tiny one for Plankton, and a large L-shaped one for Pearl (as cetaceans require water to regulate body temperature, not be crushed by their own body weight, keep their skin hydrated etc; her helmet contains a hole for her blowhole).
Normally the water helmets have one opening in the bottom, but in "Tea at the Treedome," "Chimps Ahoy," "Squidtastic Voyage," "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?," and "SpongeBob's Road to Christmas," they have two openings, one in the bottom and one at the top.
Role in series
Water helmets make their first appearance in "Tea at the Treedome," when SpongeBob and Patrick shrivel up inside Sandy's treedome. Later, they are used conventionally for any sea creature who visits her treedome.

- They are similar to Sandy's air helmet, which allows Sandy to breathe underwater similarly to how water helmets help sea creatures to breathe in her treedome.
- The water helmets bear a striking resemblance to fish bowls.
- Gary and Larry are the only main characters who have not worn a water helmet.
- In "Sandy's Nutmare," the Shalmon mistakenly appears in Sandy's treedome without a water helmet.
- In a What Ever Happened to SpongeBob? short "What if SpongeBob Was Gone? (Sandy)," the big fish mistakenly appears in Sandy's treedome without a water helmet.
- In The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Plankton uses a glass of water to go into Sandy's treedome. Despite this, Plankton can be seen wearing a water helmet in the book Bottoms Up! Jokes from Bikini Bottom and "SpongeBob's Road to Christmas."
- Similarly, in the Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years episode "Camper Gary," Gary is put in a circular jar to enter Sandy's part of the cabin.
- Mr. Krabs does not need a water helmet to enter Sandy's treedome in "The Krabby Patty That Ate Bikini Bottom," since he is a crab. Crabs can breathe both air and water, but Mr. Krabs still inexplicably wears a water helmet in "Overbooked," "Surf N' Turf," and "Hiccup Plague."
- In "Pranks a Lot," when SpongeBob and Patrick are hiding in a sheet in Sandy's treedome, their water helmets are not seen in the said sheet.
- The water helmets do not appear in season 3 or season 10. The treedome does appear once in both respective seasons, however.
- In both "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" and "The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom," whenever SpongeBob and Patrick enter the treedome, they are able to breathe perfectly fine without dehydrating.
- The water helmets almost never appear in the video games, so far they have only appeared in the Employee of the Month PC game and the PC version of Lights, Camera, Pants!.
- In the console edition of Battle for Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob does not wear a water helmet and is dehydrated when he enters the treedome.
- In SuperSponge and the Game Boy Advance edition of Battle for Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob can only venture around Sandy's treedome for a limited time but can moisten himself in her birdbath, and he will dehydrate if the timer gets to zero. A water helmet is used as the timer for the former aforementioned game, while the latter uses a picture of SpongeBob's face which gradually gets more dehydrated as it runs down.
- In Revenge of the Flying Dutchman, the treedome has sprung a leak and SpongeBob wanders freely around the treedome without a water helmet.
- In "House Sittin' for Sandy," SpongeBob is able to go much longer without dehydrating in the treedome than usual until Patrick brings up his lack of a water helmet before putting one on SpongeBob.
