"Wet Painters" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 3. In this episode, SpongeBob and Patrick paint the inside of Mr. Krabs' house.

Characters

Synopsis

SpongeBob and Patrick are tearing the Krusty Krab down and getting themselves hurt because Squidward tricked them into thinking it would attract customers. Mr. Krabs figures this out and sentences the two to do a "super, special, secret assignment" - to paint the inside of his house. But Mr. Krabs warns them that the paint they are using is permanent and threatens that if they get even the smallest drop on anything but the wall, he will cut off their rear ends and place them above his fireplace as punishment. As they go inside the house, SpongeBob sees that Mr. Krabs has so many possessions, and tells Patrick he decides to move them first. Patrick says that there is no need to move the things because they are not getting paid to move them.

After placing tarps and carefully opening the cans of paint with a screwdriver, SpongeBob takes out a huge brush, but decides to use a tiny brush. SpongeBob takes it out, then six hours later carefully paints a drop onto the wall, which begins dropping. In a panic that it may get onto an item, SpongeBob continuously blows on it to change direction in order to keep it from touching the items it heads for. He eventually blow dries it to make it stop moving, but accidentally blows a giant paint bubble in the process. Patrick blows another giant bubble shortly after, merging the two into an even bigger bubble, then inflates the bubble with a pump, causing it to burst and cover Mr. Krabs' whole house in paint, without getting a drop on anything... except on Mr. Krabs' first dollar.

SpongeBob tries wiping the tiny stain off with his tie, but only ends up spreading the paint over the entire dollar. SpongeBob ends up fearing about what they did to his dollar, meaning that Mr. Krabs will cut their butts off & mount them on the wall just like what he said before they started painting his house. Then they try a couple more things to get it off, including washing it in a washing machine, spraying it, using a saw, beating it up with a club, and smashing it with a computer, but all fail. Then they decide to put another dollar on the wall. Patrick takes out a dollar from his wallet, but uses it to buy a chocolate bar from Mr. Krabs' candy machine instead.

At that moment, Mr. Krabs comes home, to find his house's lights turned off. He turns them on and sees that his house is tidy with no sign of bubbles. SpongeBob and Patrick are about to leave, but Mr. Krabs panics, and they think Mr. Krabs found out about the stained dollar. They apologize, but Mr. Krabs is just surprised that they dusted his knickknacks. He panics again, so SpongeBob and Patrick apologize again, but he is surprised about the painted floor molding. He panics once again because he finds out that one of the dolls in his Doll-a-Rama isn't upright. He says that they are free to go now, but then bumps into a big stack of paintings jutting from the wall where his dollar usually goes and throws them off of the wall one by one as he mentions not remembering any of them at all to find SpongeBob covering his first dollar.

Mr. Krabs takes SpongeBob out of the way to find his first dollar stained by paint along with a smiley face and two dollar signs drawn on it by crayon (which Patrick mentions he thought Mr. Krabs might buy it). It seems that Mr. Krabs is going to follow through with his threat and chop SpongeBob and Patrick's behinds off, but instead, he licks the dollar and the paint (including the crayon marking) comes off. The two are confused, and Mr. Krabs reveals the paint comes off with saliva. SpongeBob concludes that Mr. Krabs lied about the paint being permanent so they would be extra careful, but Mr. Krabs said he tricked them just for fun, and laughs at his jest, prompting SpongeBob and Patrick to storm out in disgust. Unfortunately, Mr. Krabs laughs so hard that he accidentally spits all over the place, causing all the paint to melt from the walls. He groans in disappointment as he realizes this, and mutters to himself that he needs to learn how to "say it, not spray it."

Trivia

General

  • The title card background is similar to those of "Shanghaied" and "Club SpongeBob," except with a paint splatter.
  • Here is the order the paintings on the stack:
    • A clown with a teardrop
    • A car race with the red car winning
    • Some shapes that are similar to art made by Piet Mondrian
    • 2 other paintings (15 as seen by the stack in the first scene)
    • A banana
    • Painty the Pirate
    • SpongeBob hanging from the wall (not really a painting but rather SpongeBob shape-shifting just to prevent Mr. Krabs from finding out they got paint on his dollar)
  • Mr. Krabs is heard saying "You messed up my Doll-a-Rama" rather than his usual pirate-like "me."
  • This is the second episode where SpongeBob and Patrick are given the job to paint something by Mr. Krabs. The first was "Sailor Mouth."
  • One of the backgrounds Mr. Krabs is laughing in is a blank version of the title card of "Reef Blower."
  • It is later revealed how Mr. Krabs got his first dollar in "Friend or Foe."
  • At one point, Mr. Krabs sings "Blow the Man Down," the sea shanty on which the SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song is based.
  • The way that SpongeBob says "Yeah" after blowing the steam with the hairdryer is the same way he says it in "MuscleBob BuffPants" and "Prehibernation Week."
  • In the storyboard version featured on the Sponge for Hire DVD, SpongeBob says, "I dedicate this crash to my old pal Squidward!" This line was cut.
  • This is C.H. Greenblatt's first episode as a storyboard director instead of a storyboard artist.

"Hey, a dollar!"
  • The following scenes in this episode have become popular memes across the internet:
    • The scene where Patrick says "We have technology."
    • The scene where Patrick blows two giant paint bubbles.
    • The scene where the paint gets everywhere is very popular in YouTube Poop parody videos.
    • The scene where SpongeBob screams at Mr. Krabs' "ruined" first dollar.
    • A smiling face drawn with green crayon by Patrick on Mr. Krabs' dollar.
    • The scene where SpongeBob screams "Flopping flotsam! What's that?" became viral in the Latin Spanish dub.
  • A pink version of Mr. Krabs and a yellow version of Pearl can be seen in one of the photos in Mr. Krabs' house.
    • A portrait of Squidward can also be seen.
  • Even though Patrick is not normally depicted with a nose, he has a nostril in this episode. He could also smell Junior's diaper previously in "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve."
  • The computer featured has a CRT monitor.

Cultural references

  • One of the pictures on the wall is very similar to the paintings of the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, who was one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art.
  • A picture of Popeye is visible among the pictures in Mr. Krabs' house.
  • SpongeBob and Patrick's butts being hung as plaques over the fireplace is similar to how the heads of some animals, especially moose and stags, are hung as plaques over fireplaces.
    • In "Snowball Effect," Squidward owns a similar plaque over his fireplace. It is a replica of Squidward's head, but with moose antlers.

Errors

  • Patrick crashes into the wall at the Krusty Krab, causing the window in Mr. Krabs' office to break off, revealing a solid wall behind it. This is an error, as the glass previously showed the outside.
  • The door at Mr. Krabs' house switches left to right. When he advises SpongeBob and Patrick, he opens the door, but after, the handle switches to the right.
    • Also, in the first scene when that happens, the doorknob is missing.
  • After SpongeBob rubs the dollar with his tie the second time, there is still some green on the dollar. In the next shot, it is completely covered with paint.
File:Wet Painters 185.png
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick try to wash the paint off of the dollar with the laundry machine, the wall is not painted. When they use a fan, the wall is painted. When SpongeBob uses a bat on Patrick, the wall is not painted again, and when Patrick smashes the dollar with the computer, the wall is painted again.

Note the glass case on the bottom left.
File:Wet Painters 183.png
Note the glass case on the left side, inconsistent with the previous shot.
  • In the scene depicting SpongeBob hanging on Mr. Krabs' wall alongside various decorations, one of these resembles a glass case displaying 3 clam shells. In the next scene, the glass case instead seems to display 3 coins.
  • In the scenes before and after Mr. Krabs screams at SpongeBob and Patrick about them drawing on the dollar with crayon as a sketching supply, the crayon is not usually seen. It only appeared in one scene when Mr. Krabs mentions it.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick jump up and say "Yay!," Patrick's mouth disappears for a frame.
