Longest-running animated series on Nickelodeon
SpongeBob SquarePants first aired on May 1, 1999. On April 11, 2012, when SpongeBob SquarePants aired its 173rd episode, this made SpongeBob SquarePants become the longest-running animated series on Nickelodeon before, Rugrats was the longest-running animated series on Nickelodeon, with 172 episodes.
200-episode milestone
The ninth season contained a total of 26 episodes, bringing the series' overall episode count to 204. This made SpongeBob SquarePants the first Nicktoon to pass the milestone of 200 episodes.
Longest-running American animated children's television series
On February 22, 2025, ToonHive announced that SpongeBob SquarePants officially became the longest-running animated children's television show in the United States, surpassing Arthur, which aired for 25 seasons and 253 episodes from 1996 to 2022. Arthur was the longest-running American animated children's television series and the fourth longest-running American animated television series.
