From SpongeBob Wiki

"Making Waves" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 15. In this episode, Mr. Krabs and Plankton are forced to spend time together when they accidentally book the same room on a cruise.

Characters

Synopsis

After another failed attempt by Plankton to steal the secret formula, an exhausted Mr. Krabs decides that he needs a vacation on a cruise ship to get away from Plankton for awhile. He leaves Squidward in charge of rebuilding the destroyed restaurant, and when SpongeBob asks what he should do, Krabs tells him to simply wish him Bon Voyage. SpongeBob then follows Krabs all the way to the pier, repeatedly wishing him a good trip and eventually begging him to stay while crying, but Krabs boards the ship anyway. Suddenly SpongeBob cheers up, realizing this means he gets to help Squidward with the rebuilding.

Meanwhile, Krabs arrives on the cruise ship and rides the elevator down through the decks, passing from the most luxurious areas to the poorest ones. He finally reaches the very bottom, where he finds his tiny, rundown room in a grimy hallway. Though it is not what he imagined, he is still happy he got the cabin cheap, but his mood quickly changes when Plankton walks out of the bathroom. The two angrily demand to know why the other is there until they realize they have been assigned to the same room because their ticket is for double occupancy.

Later, Krabs walks aboard while enjoying a drink when he crashes into Rube Goldfish, the ship's activities director. Rube asks if Krabs wants to try their giant waterslide, but Krabs is not interested. Rube says that the ride requires a partner and he immediately pairs Krabs with Plankton, ignoring their protests. They go down the waterslide together, knocking over everyone in their path. Krabs accidentally pops the float with his claw and they both crash into a pool, followed by the people they knocked over.

Later, Plankton is playing shuffleboard alone when Krabs shows up and they start arguing again. Rube explains he accidentally scheduled them for the same time, but Krabs says there will be no problem. Still, Krabs tries to hit Plankton with the pucks, while Plankton fires an entire hot tub at Krabs using a volleyball net, sending him flying off the ship and into the ocean. At the disco, Plankton dances until Krabs steps on him on purpose. Plankton then shoots down the disco ball with a record, flattening Krabs. When Plankton laughs at him, the disco ball starts rolling, causing everyone to flee the dance floor. Next, the two are seated in a restaurant, angrily staring at each other, but as their food arrives, it turns into a food fight that upsets the other guests.

Rube announces that, because they are causing constant trouble, the captain has sentenced them to shovel coal in the engine room. While working, Krabs loses his temper, blaming Plankton for ruining his vacation. He throws his shovel and accidentally bursts some water pipe, causing the ship to lose control and crash into a giant iceberg lettuce. Krabs and Plankton end up stranded in a lifeboat together, and Rube swims up to ask if they would like to go on a lifeboat tour. The two shove him away with their paddles and he sinks into the water, saying maybe next time. They start rowing but can't agree on a direction, so Krabs swats Plankton down with his paddle and heads off in the direction he wants.

Mr. Krabs and Plankton use Rube to get off the island.

The next day, they are marooned on a deserted island, looking much older and worn out. Plankton complains that Krabs went the wrong way and accuses him of crossing the line he drew in the sand. Rube reappears from the jungle and announces that he signed them up for a bike ride along the beach, to which Plankton angrily knocks him out with a coconut. Krabs uses a bicycle pump to inflate Rube's pants and turns them into a balloon so they can escape. As they lift off, Rube wakes up and thinks he is bloated, so he unbuckles his belt and his pants deflate. Krabs and Plankton let go of his legs and fall back to the island, landing in the sand just as SpongeBob finds them with his metal detector. They ask what he is doing there and SpongeBob explains that he always searches for treasure at Goo Lagoon. They go to see with their own eyes and realize they are really at Goo Lagoon, making them start arguing once again.

One week later, back at the poorly rebuilt Krusty Krab, Krabs is bored, so he goes to visit the Chum Bucket, where Plankton is also bored. Thinking Plankton is still after the secret formula, Krabs brings it to him to reignite their rivalry. They immediately start fighting and disappear in a cloud of dust, leaving only the bottle containing the formula behind.

SpongeBob spots the bottle and quickly returns it to the safe. As he blows off the dust, it is revealed that both Krabs and Plankton have somehow ended up inside the bottle during the fight. Suddenly Rube shows up again inside the bottle with them, saying that they are all signed up to play spin the bottle. As they begin spinning inside the bottle, the safe door slams shut and the episode ends.

Deleted scene

  • Originally, during the sequence where Mr. Krabs searches for his cabin, he walks past a fish in a bear suit tying another fish's shoes, to which they all briefly exchange stares before Krabs walks away.[13] In the final episode, this was replaced by the two twin fish children from "Escape from Beneath Glove World” holding hands and grinning ominously, which Krabs does not notice.
  • Originally, during the sequence where Krabs and Plankton fight while participating in various activities on the cruise, there is a scene where the two ride fireworks and crash into a family.[16]

Production notes

Amy Lewis:

  • Lewis confirmed that the sloppier look of the background paintings in this episode was part of an overall stylistic shift towards the earlier visual aesthetic of the series: "Yes this was when [the art team was] starting to go back to the style of earlier seasons."[17]

Episode references

Cultural references

  • Mr. Krabs pronounces "Bon voyage" as "Bon voyage-y," similar to Bugs Bunny from the Looney Tunes franchise.
  • Both the deleted scene of the fish in a bear suit tying another fish's shoes and the final scene of the twin fish holding hands reference the 1980 horror film The Shining. Along with this, the room that Mr. Krabs and Plankton stay in is numbered 237, which is a reference to the haunted room #237 of the Overlook Hotel.
  • The cruise ship colliding with an iceberg lettuce is a reference to the RMS Titanic disaster in 1912.
