Season 2
The second season of the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, created by Stephen Hillenburg, was announced on August 11, 1999.[1][2]
A total of 20 half-hour episodes were produced for this season.
Season 2 premiered on October 20, 2000 with "Something Smells" and "Bossy Boots," and ended on July 26, 2003 with "Gary Takes a Bath." The season was executive produced by series creator Hillenburg, who also acted as the showrunner, and consists of 20 episodes. The series chronicles the exploits and adventures of the title character and his various friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom.
During the season's run, SpongeBob SquarePants became Nickelodeon's No. 2 children's program, behind Rugrats. Nearly 40 percent of SpongeBob's audience of 2.2 million were aged 18 to 34. The show signed a marketing deal with Target Corporation and Burger King, expanding its merchandising, and SpongeBob's popularity translated well into sales figures. In 2002, the show itself was nominated at the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children's Program. At the 29th Annie Awards, the series was nominated three times. The episodes "The Secret Box" and "Band Geeks" won at the 2002 Golden Reel Awards for Best Sound Editing in Television—Animation, while the episodes "Jellyfish Hunter" and "The Fry Cook Games" received a nomination for Best Sound Editing in Television Animation—Music category.
Several compilation DVDs that contained episodes from the season were released. The Complete 2nd Season DVD was released in Region 1 on October 5, 2004, Region 2 on October 23, 2006, and Region 4 on November 30, 2006.

Trivia
- The series was picked up for a second season on August 11, 1999.[15]
- Digital ink-and-paint animation replaced the traditional cel-animation that was used in the previous season. This allowed for more cleaner and sharper details to be used on the characters and new animation techniques.
- Characters and often the background appear paler and brighter in the Complete Season 2 DVD releases. This saturation error was tweaked in TV airings and most of the compilation DVD releases.
- Eight episodes from season 2 use the season 1 character model for SpongeBob. This model appears in the episodes "Your Shoe's Untied", "Squid's Day Off", "Bossy Boots", "Big Pink Loser", "Imitation Krabs", "Life of Crime", "Dumped", and "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic."
- The first eleven episodes of this season were copyrighted and completed in 2000, and the rest had done so in 2001. However, storyboards and production art from "Something Smells" and "Big Pink Loser" reveal that production for the first several episodes of the season began in 1999.
- This was the last season where episodes premiered in the 20th century.
- "Something Smells," "Bossy Boots," and "Christmas Who?" are the only episodes to premiere in 2000 and during the 20th century.
- "Welcome to the Chum Bucket," "Frankendoodle," "Graveyard Shift," and "Krusty Love" are the only episodes to premiere in 2002.
- "Gary Takes a Bath" also premiered in 2002 but on Nicktoons only, this episode premiered on the main Nickelodeon channel in 2003.
- "Big Pink Loser" and "Bubble Buddy" are the only episodes to be PAL-pitched in some countries.
- "Gary Takes a Bath," "Welcome to the Chum Bucket," "Frankendoodle," "Graveyard Shift," "Krusty Love," "Procrastination," "I'm with Stupid," "Squid on Strike," and "Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm" overlapped with the following season.
- "Jellyfish Hunter" was originally produced for the following season, but was moved to this season for unknown reasons.
- In the episodes "Welcome to the Chum Bucket," "Frankendoodle," ""The Secret Box", "Band Geeks", "Krusty Love," and "Sailor Mouth", SpongeBob is having his design noticeably darker shade of yellow.
