This article provides information on the chronological order of the SpongeBob SquarePants episodes. The purpose of this article is to establish a timeline of the various events in the "present" part of the series, and not just the events of Bikini Bottom's history, Mr. Krabs childhood, and the very distant future.

Timeline

1 Basic Prehistoric Era (17 BC) "SB-129" Primitive ancestors of SpongeBob and Patrick are living; Jellyfishing is invented. During Squidward's time travel to the past.
2 Advanced Prehistoric Era "Ugh" Simple language and permanent shelters are created.
3 November 30, 1942 Mr. Krabs is born. Revealed on Mr. Krabs' driver's license in "Sleepy Time."
3 1942/1943 "Grandpappy the Pirate"
(flashback)

Red beard Krabs dreams of the day when his grandson becomes a pirate.

4 November 30, 1945 "Friend or Foe"
(flashback) 		Mr. Krabs and Plankton's third birthday.
5 November 30, 1947-November 29, 1948 "My Pretty Seahorse" (mention) Mr. Krabs' father gives him a dollar Mr. Krabs was 5 years old during this date range.
6 1948–1952 "Friend or Foe" (flashback) Mr. Krabs and Plankton attend Elementary school. Estimated dates.
7 circa 1958-1959 "Grandpappy the Pirate"
(flashback) 		Mr. Krabs lives as a pirate. Mr. Krabs could have been a pirate as young as 16 when he became a pirate, based on other events of his life.
8 circa 1959 "Grandpappy the Pirate"
(flashback) 		Mr. Krabs leaves his life as a pirate.
9 circa 1959 "Krusty Krab Training Video"
(flashback) 		Mr. Krabs goes into a seemingly-endless depression. This depression may have been caused by his choice to abandon his life as a pirate, followed by a question of what to do with his life.
10 circa 1959 "Krusty Krab Training Video" Mr. Krabs purchases a bankrupt retirement home and establishes the Krusty Krab. Estimated date.
11 1959 "Hooky" (mention) The Chum Famine occurs. Last time until "Hooky" that Mr. Krabs gave days off to employees.
12 Early 1960s Various episodes Mr. Krabs serves in the Navy The date is based on Mr. Krabs joining the Navy at age 18.
13 1970s/1980s "The Original Fry Cook" (mention) Jim is fry cook at the Krusty Krab
14 1985/1986 "Truth or Square" (flashback) SpongeBob's first visit to the Krusty Krab.
15 circa 1986 Patrick is born. Estimated date; Patrick and SpongeBob appear to be the same age in many flashbacks.
16 July 14, 1986 SpongeBob is born. Revealed on his drivers license in "Doing Time" and "Sleepy Time"
17 1986/1987 "Friend or Foe" (flashback) SpongeBob makes his first Krabby Patty.
18 Late 1980s Various flashbacks SpongeBob meets Patrick
SpongeBob gets Gary as a pet.
19 Late 1980s/Early 1990s A book SpongeBob visits his grandparents' every summer. Flashback
20 c2003 "The Chaperone" (mention) SpongeBob was unable to get a date to his Junior Prom The date is only an estimate, based on SpongeBob being a Junior in High School at age 17.
21 June 2004 SpongeBob and Patrick graduate from High School. Most likely date; SpongeBob and Patrick appear to be the same age, and would be 18 years old in 2004.
22 Summer 2004 SpongeBob's transition to adulthood. SpongeBob had prior knowledge of fry cooking and developed such skills early on, which makes a college education doubtful; SpongeBob most likely moved into his Pineapple in 2004, then got his job at the Krusty Krab, a position he had been dreaming about for years.
Patrick's transition to adulthood. Patrick mentioned attending Community College; given SpongeBob's likely transition above, and since Patrick was already living in his rock, which he built by himself, Patrick probably attended Bikini Bottom Community College, and moved in that summer.
23 Summer/Fall 2004 "Truth or Square"
(flashback) 		SpongeBob moves into 124 Conch Street. The date is only an estimate, based on SpongeBob moving into his Pineapple at age 18.
24 "Help Wanted" SpongeBob gets a job at the Krusty Krab. Based on above information.
25 Fall 2004-Spring 2006 "The Bully"
(memory) 		Patrick and Flatts attend Community College The date is only an estimate, based on Patrick's birth about 1986, and attending college for two years, right after high school.
26 March 5, 2017 "SB-129"
(present) 		In the year 2017, SpongeBob and Patrick celebrate their 41st birthdays
27 March 6, 4017 "SB-129"
(future) 		Squidward awakes in the Krusty Krab freezer. Date seen on calender in the future Krusty Krab.

  • What happened first: SpongeBob met Sandy or SpongeBob got his job at the Krusty Krab?
Analysis
  • SpongeBob was already living in his Pineapplehouse at the time of both events.
  • SpongeBob met Sandy while jellyfishing.
  • It is unclear the time of year both events took place. However, given that Christmas was introduced in "Christmas Who?" both events preceded that particular Christmas, within a year.
  • SpongeBob was the first sea creature to ever visit Sandy.
  • The episode "Help Wanted" does not give any reference to Sandy.

"The episode "Tea at the Treedome" does not give any reference to the Krusty Krab or SpongeBob being employed there.
