Characters

Synopsis

One night, SpongeBob has a dream about the sky raining Krabby Patties and realizes that he is hungry. He gets up to make himself a Sea-Nut Butter and jellyfish jelly sandwich, but falls asleep after taking the first bite and leaves the refrigerator open, causing his entire house to freeze overnight. By morning, he develops the suds, an illness that causes him to sneeze bubbles. Gary tells SpongeBob he should stay home, but he denies the fact that he's sick and goes to work anyway. SpongeBob is unable to keep up with his work, and when Mr. Krabs learns from Gary that SpongeBob has the suds, he orders his fry cook to go home and rest.

Back at home, SpongeBob decides he needs help and calls upon Sandy to take him to the doctor. Shortly afterward, he is visited by Patrick, who gives him a third-hand account of the doctor's office, describing it as a horrible place full of torture devices and outdated magazines. Terrified, SpongeBob asks Patrick to be his doctor instead. Patrick starts by plugging up all of SpongeBob's holes to prevent bubbles from coming out, causing SpongeBob to inflate every time he sneezes.

After several more "treatments," Sandy arrives at the house. Patrick tries to hide SpongeBob from her to no avail. Sandy says that SpongeBob needs to see a real doctor, but Patrick assures her that his "patient" is fine, leading to a squabble. In the commotion, SpongeBob is sent bouncing away and comes to a stop in front of the Krusty Krab. He sneezes violently, blasting the corks out of his holes and releasing a massive amount of bubbles, destroying the restaurant, much to Mr. Krabs' annoyance.

Sandy then takes SpongeBob to a real doctor. He prescribes the "sponge treatment," which is performed by a human hand named Hans. The treatment involves being used to clean various objects and people, which SpongeBob enjoys greatly. Afterwards, SpongeBob is cured, his normal yellow color is restored, and he receives a giant lollipop. Wanting a lollipop of his own, Patrick pretends to also have the suds by blowing a bubble with SpongeBob's bubble jar, which the doctor didn't buy it as he sarcastically tells "Dr. Patrick" that they have a "special treatment" awaiting him. Hans returns and uses Patrick to clean a cactus and toilet, as a well-deserved karma for convincing SpongeBob that the doctor's office is a horrible place and worsening his illness by impersonating a doctor. Patrick ends the episode by crying out, "Wait! This doesn't seem right!"

Trivia

General

  • The title card background for this episode is similar to that of "Bubblestand," except that the colors are green, blue, and light blue instead of blue and purple, there are no bubbles, there are orange speckles added, and there is bamboo added.
  • This episode has the same exact opening credits as "Sleepy Time," its sister episode.
    • This and its sister are also the only episodes in the franchise where the storyboard directors are also credited as the storyboard artists in the same episode.
  • According to an interview in an issue of Nickelodeon Magazine, SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny, was very sick at the time of recording the lines for this episode. This made SpongeBob sound genuinely sick as well.
  • Suds is a parody of the common cold.
    • Contrary to common misconception, it is not possible to come down with a cold by simply being exposed to cold temperatures, which is how SpongeBob caught the suds. The worst condition that one can get from long exposure to the cold is hypothermia.
  • This is one of the shortest times SpongeBob is seen at the Krusty Krab as he is sent home by Mr. Krabs for having the suds.
  • "My leg!:" Everyone running panicked in the Krusty Krab when they think SpongeBob sneezed on their food.

"Don't touch me, I'm sterile!"
  • Objects Hans washes using SpongeBob during the Sponge Treatment:
    • A showering man's back and foot
    • The face of a dinner plate
    • The surface of a parked car
    • A black-and-white tiled floor
  • Objects Hans washes using Patrick during the latter's special treatment:
    • A cactus
    • The water-filled bowl of a toilet
  • The man who was in the shower during SpongeBob's treatment is Tom Kenny.
  • The car being washed during SpongeBob's treatment is a 1992 Honda Civic.
  • The toilet that Patrick is washed with is a 1995 American Standard Madera toilet.
  • SpongeBob sneezes 19 times.
  • SpongeBob mentions his experience with the suds again in "Whelk Attack."
  • There is a book based on this episode called SpongeBob Goes to the Doctor, also known as SpongeBob Gets the Suds! Some of the plot is altered in the book and has a few things that are different from the actual episode. SpongeBob gets the suds when he wakes up, his skin was still yellow instead of pale, Sandy does not wear her spacesuit when she gets a call from Patrick, SpongeBob is given some medicine instead of the Sponge Treatment, and Patrick is seen running away after he finds out that he was reading an old magazine.
  • This episode marks the first for several things:
    • The title card having bubbles spelling out the episode's name.
    • That no letter of the title card is written in the standard font (although the first two words of "Home Sweet Pineapple"'s title weren't written in the standard font).
    • SpongeBob's wringer debuts, albeit unused here.
    • Where the Krusty Krab appears without Squidward.
    • Where Patrick is the main antagonist.
    • Hans's presence outside of the theme song.
    • Gary's presence inside the Krusty Krab.
  • This is the last episode to play the track "Merlins Hill."
  • This episode was previously paired up with:

Dub facts

  • In the Indonesian dub, all of the live-action scenes were cut due to time constraints.[citation needed]
  • In the European Portuguese dub, both this episode and "Bubblestand" are officially called "Bolhas," which translates to "Bubbles." Netflix distinguished the episodes by adding the Portuguese onomatopoeia "Atchim..." before this episode's translated title.
  • In the Italian dub, the part where SpongeBob gets treated is cut.[9]

Cultural references

  • The premise of SpongeBob asking Patrick to be his doctor, as well as the moment where Patrick equips rubber gloves and exclaims "Don't touch me, I'm sterile!" is a reference to the sitcom The Honeymooners; in the episode "A Matter of Life and Death," Ed Norton (portrayed by Art Carney) says the line "Don't touch me, Ralph - I'm sterile!" after Ralph Kramden (portrayed by Jackie Gleason) asks him to pose as his doctor.

  • When SpongeBob gets the suds, his voice sounds raspy. But when he screams, his voice sounds normal. • Throughout the episode, SpongeBob's clothes are discolored (including his shoes being gray instead of black).
    • They turn back to their normal color once SpongeBob is cured.
