Characters

Synopsis

SpongeBob is about to leave for boating school, when Patrick arrives to ask him to go jellyfishing. SpongeBob declines, but suggests that Patrick come to school with him, to which Patrick agrees. Upon arriving, SpongeBob shows Patrick around and explains their classroom's "Good Noodle" system, where stars are awarded to well-behaved students. SpongeBob has by far the most stars of anyone in the class. He also introduces Patrick to Roger, an egg in a terrarium with a lightbulb for warmth.

"Patrick, you can't do that, she's the teacher!"

When class starts, Mrs. Puff asks Patrick his name. Nervous, he replies with "twenty-four", which he and SpongeBob find incredibly funny and proceed to joke about during class. Mrs. Puff hears their jokes and catches them, letting Patrick off the hook with a warning since he is new, but gives SpongeBob a stronger warning, stating that she expects more from him. Patrick then draws an insulting depiction of Mrs. Puff and places it on SpongeBob's desk. Mrs. Puff, thinking the picture is SpongeBob's doing, removes one of his stars from the Good Noodle Board as punishment for two classroom disruptions, much to SpongeBob's horror. Mrs. Puff then tells SpongeBob to move to the back of the room, where Patrick continues to annoy him. When SpongeBob snaps upon being annoyed that Patrick pestered him only to say a less-than-significant "hi", an angry Mrs. Puff appears, sarcastically stating that SpongeBob can have his recess.

"It's all stupid Patrick's fault."

At recess, SpongeBob angrily chastises Patrick for getting him in trouble, getting him sent to the back of the classroom, and for having his Good Noodle star removed. Patrick defensively states, "Who cares about a stupid star?". This results in the duo fighting in the hallway, until they are both sent to detention. During detention, the two roast each other, and the lightbulb keeping Roger alive burns out. At first, they refuse to even look at each other due to their previous disagreement, but frightened for Roger's life, SpongeBob and Patrick apologize for their actions and work together to save him. SpongeBob keeps Roger warm, while Patrick gets a new lightbulb.

Just as they save the egg, Mrs. Puff appears, having seen the whole incident through her one-way chalkboard. She decides to give them one star each for having saved Roger. Patrick then states that he has mistaken boating school for Spanish class. After Patrick leaves, Roger hatches from the egg, presented as a live-action chick, and asks what he missed.

Production

In a 2020 livestream on animation writing with Kent Osborne, he talked about the origins of SpongeBob and Patrick's fake fight: in high school, Osborne was the worst lacrosse player on the team, and another kid was the second worst. All of the other lacrosse players tried to get the two to fight each other, and to fit in with the other kids, they agreed to it--but performed a fake fight and swung no punches as they were scared.[2]

Deleted scenes

In the storyboard version featured on the Sponge for Hire DVD:

  • When asked to say his name, there is a deleted scene where Patrick glances at a calendar with the date number 24, prompting him to say, "24."
File:Can I have his star?.jpg
SpongeBob asking, "Can I have his star?" in the original storyboard.
  • After Patrick leaves at the end of the episode, there is a deleted line of SpongeBob saying, "Can I have his star?".
  • According to the storyboard version and the model sheet, the design of Roger after hatching out of his egg was originally going to have been drawn in a cartoon style. The storyboard version of Roger at the end is not colored in, but has an early prototype design that is also used in his model sheet. The early prototype design of Roger in the model sheet consisted of him having orange hair on his head, a yellow body, an orange beak, orange legs, wearing a dark blue sweater shirt that has his name written on it in light green letters, and black eyes. In the finished episode, the original cartoon design of Roger was scrapped in favor of a live-action baby chick being used to portray Roger.

Trivia

General

File:SB195-203.jpeg
  • This episode was originally called "Detention."
  • There is a chapter book based on this episode.
  • The scene where SpongeBob says "25" became a popular internet meme.
  • The scene where Patrick passes a note saying "Big Fat Meanie" became popular on YouTube and has been parodied in various videos and became a popular meme on the internet.
  • When Mrs. Puff opens the drawers in her desk to put the paper that Patrick drew of her, many different papers making fun of Mrs. Puff can be seen inside that drawer.
  • In most episodes, the Boating School is just one room. In this episode, however, it looks like a real school. This also happens in "The Bully."
  • This is the only episode to show the boating school having stairs and thus two stories.
  • This is the first episode for a few things:
    • The first episode to have a chalkboard as the title card background.
    • The first episode where Patrick goes to Mrs. Puff's Boating School.
      • Despite having known her before in "Boating School," Patrick and Mrs. Puff are properly introduced to each other in this episode.
    • The first episode where SpongeBob loses a star from his records. He loses a star again in "Restraining SpongeBob."
  • The graffiti on the desk in the back of the classroom depicts the following:
    • "Down With Learning"
    • "Mrs. Puff" with a crudely drawn version of her to the right, which is just a circle with a face and arms/legs.
    • "Skool is 4 Chumps"
    • A peace sign symbol
    • A tic-tac-toe puzzle
  • When the egg hatches at the end, Roger is seen as a live-action baby chick. This is actually stock footage owned by Image Bank Film. The footage can be found on Getty Images.[4][5]
  • SpongeBob has a large amount of Good Noodle stars in this episode, but in "Teacher's Pests," he has no stars.
  • For unknown reasons, this episode and its sister episode were rated 13+ on Amazon Prime Video in August 2020.[citation needed]
    • This has since been corrected as of October 2020, and the episode is back to being rated its original TV-Y7 rating on Amazon Prime Video.
  • This episode was paired up with different episodes in different marathons:
  • SpongeBob and Patrick say "I hate you" ten times.
  • SpongeBob says he has 74 good noodle stars. However, it shows only 25 good noodle stars.
  • The names on the Good Noodle Boards are SpongeBob, Lloyd, Sheila, Paco, Debbie, Horace, and Patrick.

Dub facts

  • In the Hebrew dub, Roger, at the end of the episode, says, "תעברו לסיפור הבא," which translates to "Get to the next story", thus making him break the fourth wall.
  • In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, this is the last episode that Patrick Star was voiced by Sérgio Moreno.

Cultural references

  • When Mrs. Puff tells SpongeBob and Patrick, "May Neptune have mercy on your souls," it is a reference to the phrase, "May God have mercy on your soul," which a judge says to a convict who is about to receive the death penalty.
  • The "Big Fat Meanie" drawing Patrick makes may be a reference to the 90's children's book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. In the book, the titular Lilly makes a similarly degrading drawing of her teacher that refers to him as "Big Fat Mean Mr. Stealing Teacher" in response to him confiscating her purse.

Errors

  • In early airings, the episode had an incorrect copyright date of 2001 in the credits. Later airings (and the original print of this episode) have the correct date of 2002.[8]
    • This mistake may be attributed to the fact that this episode was mostly in production in 2001, but wasn't actually finished until the early part of 2002.
File:New Student Starfish 031.png
  • When Patrick pictures Mrs. Puff's class like a class photo day, the black sign in front of the kids in the front reads "Mrs. Puff's Driving School," but Mrs. Puff's school sign says "Mrs. Puff's Boating School."
File:New Student Starfish 066.png
There are no stars on the Good Noodle Board.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick take their seats in the classroom, the Good Noodle Board appears to be blank.
  • When Mrs. Puff becomes large in her "Big Fat Meanie" form, her shoes are the same color as her legs and arms.
  • Patrick's "Big Fat Meanie" drawing before being put into Mrs. Puff's drawer appears different from the one that appears as it is put into Mrs. Puff's drawer.
  • When Mrs. Puff removes one of SpongeBob's good noodle stars, the star appears bigger than the other ones.
  • When Mrs. Puff tells SpongeBob that she is done with his nonsense and tells him to get all of his stuff, SpongeBob appears to have nothing with him despite the fact that he brought his backpack earlier in the episode.
File:New Student Starfish 125.png
The text is gone.
  • When SpongeBob is being sentenced to sit in the old desk at the back, the text says "Skool is 4 chumps," but in the next scene, the text is gone.
  • SpongeBob writes Patrick's name on the Good Noodle Board in capital letters. Later on, when SpongeBob and Patrick are saving Roger, Patrick's name is in lower case, and when Mrs. Puff tells them that she will give them a gold star each, it is in capitals again.
  • The names on the Good Noodle Board change throughout the episode.
  • The number of stars per student changes throughout the episode.
