Bad ScumBob reasons
Note: These are my opinions
What I really don't like is usually when an episode that is nowhere near bad is given ScumBobs by many. This is an especially with episodes in season 10 and 11, and IMO the reasons for being ScumBobs are mostly trivial or petty. Here is a list of bad reasons for rating an episode ScumBob.
Bad reasons to give an episode ScumBob (or good)
- This episode is nowhere near good but got #1 in a top 10/100 marathon: Really? You judge it for being #1 on a list and want to defame it as a result? Most episodes around this level still has qualities that makes it good, and such reason is pretty stupid.
- Example: Karate Island. This episode got #1 on the Meh-ish Day Ever marathon, but many dislikes just because of this. This episode still has qualities, such as action themes and SpongeBob getting "punished" for being a jerk to Sandy. The dedication at the end should not affect the rating at all too!
- It's sister episode is trash so this episode is good: Another invalid reason as if the episode still have bad qualities to make it ScumBob or bad, it is like that.
- Example: Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful. This episode is only liked because its sister is one of the worst SpongeBob episodes. It still has Squidward torture for nothing, and even though he beats Squilliam, he still gets punished for nothing at the end. This episode is nowhere near a good episode.
- Semi-example: My Leg!. While an episode being paired with Ink Lemonade can be based on a running gag, it gets annoying soon and it kinda drifts away the main plot.
- Non-example: Gary in Love. Despite being paired with One Coarse Meal, the love story is still good, much better than A Pal for Gary, and connects to real romance. It does not torture anyone, has no flaws, and is much better than Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful.
- Squidward torture: This is probably the most arguable one. You might be asking, why do people like Jellyfishing, Sportz?, and Patrick! The Game (that are all slight Squidward tortures) and hate others like Squid Wood, Choir Boys, and Good Neighbors? In the most part, Squidward doesn't deserve it, which is why episodes like Cephalopod Lodge should get a bad rating. Those in which Squidward does kinda deserve it, does not need ScumBob. Exceptions are if he does get abused badly as a result like Sportz? or if it because of the stupidity of other characters like Little Yellow Book.
- Example: Ink Lemonade. Squidward did not deserve even one bit of the torture.
- Example: Sportz?. Although he gets punished for hurting SpongeBob and Patrick, he gets abused to the point that he is also brutally hurt.
- Example: Little Yellow Book. Squidward does not deserve being tortured due to the citizens, my god they got annoying very quickly. Fools in April might be similar but unlike Little Yellow Book, the citizens were not satisfied at all, making Fools in April either bad or meh.
- Semi-example: Artist Unknown. Ignoring the jokes and humor, this episode is nothing but a Squidward torture in an art class. Many can see this a toleratable episode due to the jokes.
- Non-example: House Fancy. At least Squidward still wins so it is not completely Squidward torture. The toenail scene should not affect the episode rating despite being disturbing.
- Stupid Patrick: This is also an arguable one. Patrick's stupidity can sometimes lead into trouble, as seen in Stuck in the Wringer. However, Patrick-Man! is liked and Patrick's Coupon is hated, something I don't like. In Patrick-Man!, he tries to ruin everything due to his stupidity, and there is a lack of jokes. Yet, this episode is not rated bad. On the other hand, Patrick's Coupon has a few jokes, Patrick is not torturing anyone or ruining anything with stupidity, but keeps getting ScumBob'd. This is an example of not the proper use of Stupid Patrick for giving ScumBobs.
- Example: Patrick-Man!. Stated above.
- Non-example: Patrick's Coupon. Stated above.
- Cheapskate Krabs: Another controversal one, it really depends on the cheapness of Mr. Krabs. If he does something like give his workers a penny an hour just for inventing a new patty, it's okay. However, something like firing SpongeBob over a nickel is a different story.
- Example: SpongeBob You're Fired. See above, a nickel is no reason to fire your best employee. Also has too much filler and stupidity.
- Non-example: Can You Spare a Dime?. Squidward gets fired over a dime, which is also petty. But again, there are jokes and a main plot that doesn't rely on filler that makes this good.
Good reasons to give an episode ScumBob (or good)
- Unnecessary plot twists: There are sometimes plot twists that makes the episode look better, like Graveyard Shift. However, not all of them are needed, and a few can ruin episodes.
- Example: New Leaf. Plankton and Mr. Krabs acts warm-hearted with each other, making this episode look good. That is until that plot twist at the end, and such twist can even be predicted from the start.
- Example: Kenny the Cat. How can a cat breathe underwater? Such twist of Kenny using an oxygen tank can easily be predicted from the start.
- Example: Plankton Retires. The robot decoy trick at the end is pointless anyways, since the SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs are also robots, making this episode almost unnecessary and feels like they added filler just to reach this twist.
- Unneeded arrests: A lot of times you can find arrests very intimating to your character, especially if it's someone like Mrs. Puff or Squidward. A lot of times though it can get out of hand.
