"Squidward's Tough Break" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 16. In this episode, after Squidward loses his memory, he adopts a new tough guy persona.

Characters

Synopsis

Squidward is ready for a day off of sophistication, cycling to 617 Kraken Avenue to visit the Sol de Soup Spoon. However, when he gets there, he is really at The Salty Spitoon, seeing a guy fall out of a window, now thinking he's at the wrong place. Reg comes out of the restaurant and convinces him that he is, throwing him into the restaurant. Reg looks at the number on the Spitoon building, mistakenly saying 617 instead of 917.

Squidward lands onto a seat and sees all of the wild antics the Spitoon attendees get up to. When Reg asks him for a beverage, he asks for recommendations, and Squidward is given "The Cold Cadaver," the toughest milkshake on the menu, and it knocks the octopus out of his mind. Squidward wakes up on the Spitoon grounds, now having amnesia. After Reg convinces Squidward that he's pretty tough for surviving from the "Cadaver" drink, Squidward starts to think he's a pretty tough guy, with Reg giving him the new name of Crazy Legs, based on how his legs are all twisted from the drink incident earlier. Reg helps Crazy Legs cement his personality by lending him his motorcycle and helmet, subsequently driving it into the Spitoon and injuring multiple people and is then awarded with new boots for his efforts.

Crazy Legs and some of the Spitoonites go out to the outskirts of Bikini Bottom, and the cephalopod successfully harasses Rube, earning him a leather sweater. He and the Spitoon gang enter the Krusty Krab, messing with the patrons and their meals, and even roughhousing SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs. The group all decide to break and enter a house, which is really just Squidward's, and they vandalize the whole place. SpongeBob suddenly comes in to see the ruckus going on as a part of his "nightly security check" on the locale, and Crazy Legs questions why he is here, attempting to maul SpongeBob with the teddy bear he was holding and throwing him to the wall. SpongeBob tries to jog Crazy Legs' memory by picking up Squidward's clarinet and playing it, which Crazy Legs just stuffs a bomb in, causing the Easter Island head to explode.

Crazy Legs returns.

Squidward wakes up with his normal memories intact, distraught with his destructed house, SpongeBob, and all of the Spitoonites, who he believes destroyed it. The tough gang walks off in disappointment, and Squidward slams the door at them in frustration. What he doesn't realize is that the little piece of the upper floor holding his bathtub is above him, crashing into his head, and turning him back into Crazy Legs, going feral over the successful ransacking of the house, with SpongeBob alarming the tough guys that Crazy Legs is back.

Trivia

General

  • This episode and its sister will be the first episodes of the main series to premiere in September since "The Goofy Newbie" and "Squid's on a Bus," which premiered on September 28, 2019, nearly 6 years ago.
  • The title refers to both the birth of Squidward's tough guy facade and his unfortunate incident of memory loss.
  • This episode, along with its sister, is the first to solely credit Shane Richardson as the art director. He was previously credited as co-art director alongside the late Peter Bennett, who was posthumously credited after his passing on May 17, 2024.
  • Squidward losing his memory is similar to what happened to SpongeBob in season 5's "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?"
  • Twelve self-portraits originally seen in "Squid's Visit," including the sad crying clown painting, reappear in this episode, marking their first appearance since their debut.

  • The disturbed face that Troutenhiemer makes when Squidward double dips one of his fries is similar to the face he makes from "Something Smells" when he smells SpongeBob's rancid breath, which is also commonly known as the "Deuueaugh!" meme.
  • Many of the Salty Spitoon patrons from "Salty Sponge" reappear in this episode, including its owner, Mrs. Sally Spitoon.
